It's as though they just disappeared overnight. I remember a few years back I would see them everywhere, so common. And then I think around a year passed by and I ended up noticing that you just so rarely see them anymore. I have a MK1 Flight in red (so rare to see Mk1 Focuses in red). It's 20 years old, engine gets through oil a bit quicker than it used to, so I have to top it up one or two extra times a year, and a lot of the parts underneath are very rusty, those are the main two things that are wrong with it really, so it doesn't seem to be doing too badly for being 20 years old. I would like to keep it going for as long as possible.
My piece is a 2002 Ghia Estate, almost 200k miles on it (322k kms, to be precise) I made an engine flush in 2022 (liquimoly), fuel consumption decreased, just like oil consumption. 1.8Zetec petrol engine, I love it. The only thing I hate about my Focus: rust. Perfect daily driver.
I still see a few mk2s but mk1s have disappeared in Canada and northern US (because of our harsh weather). Some people still own them in Southern US. We don’t see many anymore on the Focus Fanatics forum. If I still have mine, it’s because I only use it in summer and hardly in rain and never parked in full sun. The rest of the time, it’s inside a heated and chilled garage.
my 'W' reg (2000)0 focus zetech ghia 2.0 blk petrol estate. 206,000m..last 4 1/2 years: new clutch..timing belt /water pump...all engine /gearbox mounts..sway bar links...front drop links...3 jack point sil welding...last one is solid...service parts yearly....love it...will keep it for as long as the engine holds up (sweet as a nut so far so good)
There have been many registered after that date in April and May, the last MK1 I've seen registered was May 29th. There were some rare late 55/06 registrations for some reason but only 2-5 approx.
Thanks for tge update. Not surprised it's going down quite a bit but still alarming. Though still see a few around Doncaster where I live though not as many as mk2s etc.
If they follow MK3 Fiestas (which are 9 years ahead of the Focus and sold just over the million mark) there will be less than 15K for sure before it bottoms out.
It's the same here in Ireland. The Mk1 Focus used to be everywhere, slowly but surely they're getting thinner on the ground. Like you said they're in the cheap - disposable category it would seem. That's why I would be slow to sell mine, I know it would end up run into the ground and scrapped. Cheap finance has had a negative impact on numbers too I'd imagine. Shame really as they are a really good car, base or Ghia. Mine is a 04, 1.4 LX Steel, 4 door saloon. I bought it in November 2019 for €600 with a years NCT ( mot ) and only 79,000 miles on the clock. Its been my daily since, outside in all weather and its now got 191,000 relatively trouble free miles on it. It might need droplinks at the front soon but thats about it. Anyway, keep up the great videos 👍🏼
I entered my focus into a large classic car show last year. It was the only one there and I suspect it raised a few eyebrows. But I think it is time for it to be considered a modern classic now.
I have a panther black 1.6 Ghia which was registered in March 2005. Just done over 100k miles and still going strong, don't plan on letting her go any time soon. It has definitely turned into a game of "spot the Focus" as mk1s seem to be vanishing off the roads. & I've only ever seen a handful of mk1s with the optional bi xenon headlamps like mine which makes me wonder how rare they were to begin with
I think big contributing factor of number going down also eco things in all countries because let's face it these cars are "very poluting" by eco people. Another factor is just now days people want newest and best looking thing. Eventually numbers will slow down, but how many rare and special editions will be lost..?
Saw one in Stockport the other week... A real early 3door with the rear windows that go all the way to the back (not the slightly later ones with plastic trim in the corner). Looked absolutely mint 👍🏻
@@usuallyfixingtinkering this one didn't mate. Let me have your email I'll send you the photos. They actually stopped making the "full size" windows in '99 on cost grounds

About the engines, only the SPI SOHC 2 litres 110 HP, Zetec DOHC 2 litres 130 HP and a few Duratec 2.3 made it to North America. None of diesel and smaller engines made it here and most of them were hatchback and wagon. I am registered in the main scrapyard in my province and I don’t even see some older mk1s being scrapped anymore. All gone. For owning a 2003, I can tell you that all plastics are disintegrated and I had to order several mouldings from eBay (your best friend) and rockauto. The only way to preserve them is to use them as a second car only and have the infrastructure to keep them off of bad weather.
That is good advise and very true, oh the SPI is the revised old-school CVH! Not a very good engine at that capacity! The other two engines can't be beaten!
@@usuallyfixingtinkering The SPI would not last for more than 100,000 kilometres. There was a flaw with the cylinders or rings, not tight enough I think.
Thanks for another update. They do seem to be disappearing at an alarming rate. Can you give some more detail figures for the Estates, is that possible? I have a 2.0 Ghia Auto Estate and I would be interested to know how many now survive. Thanks Glenn.
I can't believe there is less than 200 silver editions left on the road, I suppose dave and i will just need to be the self appointed guardians of the silvers lol. For being the most popular car in the country at one point, there's not really that many left at all.

Absolutely would take an older MK1 over it's followers, there's an awful lot being banger raced but eventually that supply dwindles and MK2's will be the next on the list.
It's not incredibly important but it builds a picture and gives an insight for owners of a MK1 or prospective owners of the future who are taking an interest to show just how many are leaving us, what models fare better and those that are not. I'm a little tired of those who will say "I see them everywhere", that's not really possible now and these numbers show this. These videos have had the benefit of motivating owners to look after them, especially the rare editions.

Can anybody help me with something? I have a 1.6 zetec se collection with the automatic climate control.
