Billy Strings is part of a new generation of flatpickers that are taking bluegrass guitar to the next level. His personal style isn't for everyone, as can be seen in every bluegrass guitar forum argument of the last 6 months. I've previously covered Billy's playing on Dust In A Baggie, While I'm Waiting Here, Tennessee Stud, I'm A Lonesome Fugitive, and Cocaine Blues. In the future I'll get to other hits like Slow Train, I promise (yes, the one in the van). I do find it interesting that in a scene flooded with Tony Rice imitators that the most popular flatpicker right now is Billy Strings, who is very influenced by Doc Watson!
Big thanks to Luke Black for being a monster and transcribing this break!

Billy Strings living room performance has to be musical milestone.
He always sounded his best in that type of situation, as well ad playing with his pops.
Except for the green shirt twit
Dammit Marcel I literally listened to this song on repeat, half speed, tabbed everything out, and learned it at full speed TWO DAYS AGO.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You learn more when you do it all yourself! 🤣
Can you please transcribe the into ? It’s the best part
I have officially embarked on my 3 year mission to get this one down pat
Достоевский?
⅔x&¥₩£€
lol Since the pandemic all I have been doing is practicing this song and reading Dostoevsky.
It's honestly not too difficult! I've played strictly classical, and fingerstyle for going on 12 years now. I've only been seriously getting into flatpicking in the past couple months, and I can almost play this at full-speed. Lol
@@renekton410 That is strange cause thats exactly what Ive been doing haha. The Brothers Karamazov and Blue Grass!
How dare you crop out the green shirt guy. Legend.
Side Quest..
Hypeman
...Silent, you know nothing! Fools! We must all thank the mighty GSG! for he was the first witness of Billies dusty baggy, I mean his greatness. What a musician! And he seems so genuinely nice, and good hearted. If he ever starts a cult I call dips!
I wanted to thumbs up your comment but if you think im taking it up to 70 then you're crazy
Looooool u killed me bro
Wow, this 4-in-1 deal (3 breaks and a Strum machine tutorial!) comes at such an appropriate time when we're all holed up worrying about when our next paycheck is going to come in! Thank you, Marcel!
This song is going to be my lockdown goal
How's it going?
What about now?
Yikes
Iam with you yiking bro.
@@Aaron_etc lmfao
I sat down determined to learn this and all I learned was how to say "HELLLLL YEEEEUH" like the guy filming it :(
Break 1- 6:36
Break 2- 11:57
Break 3- 15:04
@Mike Bastiat listen again, yeah that's billy playing the first break. I time stamped robs because he's playing the tabs he provided and he's breaking it down. So no, not wrong
Thanks Marcel! You kick ass! Just what a lot of us probably needed during these times. Much love
You are an awesome player, and have such a humble demeanor. Very refreshing. Thanks for the great lesson and free tab 👍
Without doubt, the best teacher on You tube!!!!!!by a bluegrass mile!!!!!!
I'm a newbie because of Billy! Thanks Marcel!
Great, now I know what to do during quarantine. Thx for the vid !
This is the best bluegrass lesson I've ever found on TH-cam. Thanks Marcel! Now to get it up to speed...
i never look at this guy and think bluegrass but the man is a living legend.
yo what i got a heart as the first like-
Somehow TH-cam got me from a steel panther rig run down to Molly Tuttle , to Molly Tuttle and billy strings, to a long rabbit hole of billy strings videos. All the way to Marcel teaching me how to play bluegrass and I couldn’t be more pleased with TH-cam right now. Subscribed! I played punk rock guitar in my teens but haven’t touched a guitar in 15 years. Now if it weren’t for covid I’d be running down to guitar center to buy a dreadnaught.
Get it delivered!🤣🤣
Marcel, I'm so glad I found you............. and Billie......... when I get back from holiday I'm gonna start donating a being a proper subscriber...!!!
...amazing how far Billy's progressed since this old video was shot. I haven't watched it for a minute.
Another great Billy Break to work on and try to get up to speed. I'm new to Bluegrass, (new Martin Guitar Helps) I'm new to Billy and new to you too. Many, many thanks to you Marcel. You are an inspiration.
Marcel you legend!
I stayed at home before just to learn your licks! Now i have a reason to stay at home and learn bluegrass 😂😂😂
Thanks Marcus
Big breakthroughs with this one!
I just got turned on to String last fall. He has blown my mind! You are amazing playing this
I wish I would’ve found your channel earlier I love the way you teach this lesson, it made it so much easier for me understand and learn how to play this. Thank you so much for putting out this lesson I love the way billy plays this song
Dude you are literally the perfect channel ty
dude, just stumbled on your video here, and damn im blown away. nice and accurate and super easy to follow. you are rocking it. great job
You are right about that Strum Machine! Definitely a good tool for jammin' at home.
Marcel, you’re a true hero my man!
As someone just attempting to play bluegrass, I found this song specifically to be extremely unattainable. The way you break this down is phenomenal, and it really isn't THAT difficult. Now back to cursing and smacking myself trying to get up to 140.
I can't tell you how much i appreciate this video. The couch performance is still my absolute favorite. I'll try to get the software. it looks sweet. Great geeetar learn'n Marcel!
Very detailed explanation. Incredible work Marcel. Thank you!
Marcel I love music but more importantly, you seem like such a cool dude. Thanks for great content!
I can't wait until I'm "Billy Strings" type of sloppy :D I don't thing TH-cam has a setting slow enough for me right now, but man do I love what you do. I've always liked bluegrass, and at 45 the younger players like Billy & Molly have pulled me in yet again. I'm only 6 months into learning guitar, but I still like to try what you put out. Thanks for this, I needed it!
Rich Johnson I know it’s so fast 😂
46 over here and loving the younger bluegrass players, too! Just started getting into flatpicking last year and Skype lessons with Marcel have helped me out tremendously. I highly recommend his lessons!
Steve Sirois I agree! I just started doing Skype lessons with him the other week. I am blind so tabs don’t do me any good and he is a great teacher for sure.
This is way too advanced for someone who has only been playing 6 months, but I really admire the ambition! The chords and structure are very simple but you won't be touching these licks for a while. Just stick with changing fluently between the G, C and D chords for now. Marcel is right in saying this isn't as complex as it might appear and even more right when he says it's really about using and internalising what you can from it to "make it your own". Just keep your pace (very) slow and steady. Good luck!
Well done sir. Best tutorial I've seen in a long time.
Good job on this, Marcel. Your production is always excellent and the videos clear and easy to follow. The channel is criminally undersubbed in my estimation. Greetings from the UK.
Greatly appreciate you taking the time to add the three breaks. The intro to the song is pretty killer as well. Is it possible you could tab that out?
Hello, I just joined the group and I'm more than willing to but those chops in my bag of guitar tricks! Thx Marcel for the info. I'm on your news letter as well!
thanks marcel cant wait to get stuck in love billy also cool n64 top
I transcribed the first break on my own and came up a little bit different, for one he does a full arpeggio over most of the C chords in the break, coming back up to play the Dom 7 note on the "2" count. Also on the D chord, he's actually playing a D7.
This is a really great channel! I downloaded the tablature. Very good.
I'm going to build an altar for you. Thanks.
Thanks Marcel ! How about a Norman Blake song? Like a version of "Slow Train Through Georgia" but cross picked instead of finger style. Yeah,
I don't ask for much ...
Bro, you explain things really well. Thankyou
Your an amazing teacher bro. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
6:34 play along starts.
Excellent lesson, I am very grateful to you
Thank you for all your lessons! Love that not only do you teach the songs but also the theory behind them. Any chance you could do the Billy Strings cover of I'm Ready For the Times To Get Better?
Thank you for doing this cant wait to learn it.
Got it yet?
Thanks Marcel, I Just learned Bound to Ride from you (still trying to figure out how the singing part works 🙄) This is going to be next, it sounds super fun!
Do a lesson on Billy’s version of wharf rat. Love your channel.
Marcel you just gave me work for weeks. Thank you very much, I'm loving your content. Saludos desde Chile!
Awesome! Found you. So glad. Be back fer sure.👍🏻
FANTASTIC! Thank you! Subscribed
Wondering what the strum pattern is for the verse. The backing track from strum machine doesn’t sound same as how he plays it? Tough to get it to flow. Trying to break it all down
Man thank you so much the effort you put into these lessons is amazing!
Such a great lesson Marcel!
You’re the man Marcel! I Would love to see Some tabs from Molly Tuttles and Billy Strings back and forth in the live version of Little Maggie at grey fox.
Marcel is a guitar god.
this video was amazing! subbed man thank you!!!
New to your channel... wish I’d have found it sooner!
Thank you
Excellent lessons.
You're the man!
Hi Marcel! Great Vid! Nice Shirt, I need a hug......
You can't buy a hug on the site yet, unfortunately. When can I get some of your merch though?
@@LessonsWithMarcel gonna have to add that to you'r online store. And Soon!
incredibly helpful, thanks
Appreciate this very much bro
Why does that chromatic thing on measure 6 work over g ? I can't figure out what it relates to other than the first note making it a G7 note
Do a lesson on Billy Strings version of Last Day At Gettysburg. The video is by T Shaw’s Progressive Bluegrass
Brilliant
Can you do Cold on the shoulder or likes of me?
Hello sir. Grateful for the lesson but when trying to DL this free tab from your website I’m encountering a Red exclamation point (!) at the top of the checkout page and a red asterisk (*) where I have already entered my first/last and email address. I cannot locate any other boxes or drop down menus to fill out so I’m stumped as to why it won’t fulfill my order. Thank you.
Oh yikes! Looks like something has gone down on the site. I'll get on it!
Awesome intro
Thank you !!!
Thanks for the video Marel!! It is awesome. Did you do the tab for the intro too or did I miss a part? Cheers and keep up the great work!
Hey man, we actually didn't include the very first break in this one. We did that for a couple reasons but one just being the other breaks are more fun and the video was just getting long! Remember Billy is just improvising breaks so it would be a good opportunity for you to use the content in the other breaks to create your own intro break!
@@LessonsWithMarcel cool, thanks for coming back to me Marcel. Yeah I can already hear that he is using similar licks from the other breaks in the intro. So I'm sure you are right, if I can learn all the breaks, coming up with an intro shouldn't be too difficult by then :) Cheers!
This is awesome, thank you for doing this! Would love to see a video on the lead break in the album version of Hollow Heart!
Thank you soooooooo much for this🙏🏻 ur a good man
I Love you for this
sorry. where i can get the coupon code?
No coupon code needed! Just go to strummachine.com/Marcel and you get 30 days free!
How is something this well done- free?
The version on the grand old opry is my favorite
Same! His solo is amazing
Can you do his cover or o brother whrre art thou
I wish I understood the fretboard like you. I just know how to play it, and not very well at that. I can just hear it then trial and error gets me there.
Learning the fretboard just takes a lot of practicing. There are no quick tricks to save time😄😄
Thanks bro you are awesome dude 👍🙏❤️
this is not quite as hard to play as I was anticipating, but it will definitely be hard to play it as fast as he plays it (that's part of the fun though!)
I’m looking forward to playing that sloppy 🤣🤣👍🏻👍🏻
Where's the intro lead break man?
hey this is great but what about the intro to the song?
The intro has a lot of dead notes in it, it's a little rough around the edges. The quality of the other breaks was much greater so I covered those instead! Hope this helps anyway, one of these other breaks could easily be plugged into the beginning!
@@LessonsWithMarcel yeah i just realized you posted a lesson for the other live version somewhere else (or maybe it was someone else) and you could just plug that in. Any way thanks for these! They make quarantine so much more pleasant.
Great lesson! Thank you! Just wondering but what model Martin do you have with all the fancy appointments and black headstock? I love it lol
It's a DC Aura custom. Found it mislabeled at a guitar center and snatched it up, no idea how that happened but I'm not complaining!
@@LessonsWithMarcel man thats awesome! congrats lol shes a beauty!
i have a D-12E and i love it and eventually would love something like that martin!
Breakdown billy strings cover of don't think twice. Subbed
It isn't flatpicking, it's fingerpicking. Not applicable.
FUCK YEAH MARCEL.
Hi how do I buy a lesson please
With your money.
Kyle F YOU GOT HIM GOOD!!!! OoooooOooOoO!!! Punisher

What year is Billy getting out of prison?
i've a sing string banjo strung the way dr groovy said to do it. I think i'll have a go playing this on that and see what it sounds like.
Please do widespread panic next Jimmy herring
Great job on this Marcel. You mention that Billy is young and sloppy on this recording. I'll never be as young as Billy but I hope to someday be as sloppy.
A Fan? No goddamnit, I am of course not a fan of the great String. For he is godly, I am not worthy yet. But his heavenly music makes my guitarplayer`s heart sing for yoy, whenever he picks up the mighty 6 String and plays. If you really MUST know... lol
Billy plays with super high action! You could drive a truck under them strings! He says he has no choice, he hits those strings so hard, if action were any lower... it would all buzz out. This has to affect everything else
I hate that he doesn't have 1mil+ subs. I guess bluegrass guitar breakdowns is a small audience
YEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS FUCKING FINALLYYYY!!!! AAAAAHHHH
