My great grandmother Elsie Moore (nee Butler)’s father was contacted years ago about claiming inheritance of the castle but due to a lack of knowledge about our family history on our part he was unable to lay claim to the castle before our distant relatives gave it up

Apparently there’s a portrait in the castle’s gallery of an old ancestor that looks exactly like my grandmother, I’ve never been but I’d love to see it one day!

This is so interesting. (But yes, the volume is low.) I was interested to know more, as my husband and our sons are descended from King Edward Longshanks, moves down to Butlers and Sherman's etc on his mom's side of family. It links to this castle/family. Just needed to see it , if only here on You Tube!

William Marshall (Guillaume leMareschal) was indeed Earl of Pembroke, but hardly the 1st one. He became the Earl by marrying the previous Earl's daughter. The original Earls of Pembroke were members of the deClare family.

What frustrates me me is that, Lord James E.T Butler, 3rd marquess of Ordmonde had a boy with lady Elizabeth Harriet Grosvenor, marchioness of Ordmonde, had a child who was born out of marriage - James butler, who married a lady previously married to a wealthy landowner, James butler was quite poor, or he pretended to be - he was quite a little documented figure so we shan’t ever know, they had a child, called Mary Butler, who is my grandmother, so the passage of the land and titles was done correctly, it would have meant that it passed onto Mary butler, my grandmother, but unfortunately, Arthur butler, brother of the 3rd marquess of Ordmonde inherited it, and sold the castle to the office of public works’ restoration committee, for the ridiculous price of £50.

If your grandmother was of illegitimate birth then unfortunately not. If she was of legitimate birth then unfortunately not. Illegitimacy was not a right to title around that time and the law of Primogenature also prevailed, only repealed recently. The castle may have sold for the nominal sum of £50 but this was deliberate and done with altruistim. £50 being the minimum a large land holding could be sold legally. It was sold first to the people of Kilkenny and then later taken into the care of the OPW. I emphasise care as the OPW are not landowners, but are instead State appointed custodians. I have inherited many pieces of furniture from the Castle due to my family's direct links with the Earls going back to the 18th century. Some were donated back but one that holds a special place is a clock gifted to my great great grandfather on his wedding day by the second last Earl, together with a house on the grounds of the castle. The remains of the house can be seen on the canal walk and the clock, restored 15 years ago at great expense by the renowned Mr. Lawlor runs perfectly.

@@UselessIsUseful It may be common, but anyone from Ireland with the last name of Butler is descended from Theobald Fitzwalter. Butler was a position bestowed on Fitzwalter. It entitled him to collect a percentage of wine carried by ships that docked in Ireland.

My ancestors burgerlized that castle. I guess that explains my criminal record today. Then again it's hard to not have a criminal record in the states. I know my uncle's did way crazier things then me in Ireland before moving to America and they we just fined and shamed in the local comer newspaper.

At least you didn't blast a hole in the wall like Cromwell did. My mother, who was a Butler and whose family came from Kilkenny was a big fan of JFK. I recently found out that the Kennedys and Butlers were enemies for quite a few years until they signed a peace treaty. That original treaty was given to JFK when he visited Ireland. The treaty didn't last long though, the Kennedys broke it about 10 years after it was signed. LOL.
