This flagellated parasite, commonly referred to as Costia, is actually Icthyobodo spp. (Not related to the causative agent of white spot disease). These tiny parasites are tricky to spot, but have a unique swimming pattern. Given their anatomy, they flop about like tiny pancakes. It takes a lot of skill to spot them and sometimes, a lot of patience.
Congregating around the gills, these tiny parasites can have a big impact on your fish’s behavior by depleting their respiratory ability. Early detection and treatment is best to make sure these tiny troublemakers don’t kill your fish.
