OK, I had to go down to the basement and dig out this LP record I bought back in 1980 when I was 16 years old. I started listening to jazz when I was 12, at night on KGU AM radio in Honolulu. They used to play this song in their regular rotation, but I could never find the album in the record stores. After several years of searching, I had one of the employees look it up, and order it for me. If I remember correctly, it had to be imported from Japan, and it took a month to get in. I've probably listened to this recording a couple hundred times over the years, and have never gotten tired of it. A few years ago I heard my (then 15 year old) son grooving to this song in his room. Surprised, I asked him where he got it from. Apparently he stumbled across it in a (very) old iTunes playlist of mine that was lurking in the dark recesses of my old iMac, and copied it to his favorites list. Album - CRYSTAL GREEN, by RAINBOW featuring Will Boulware Musicians: Mike Brecker: Tenor Saxophone Will Boulware: Acoustic Piano, Fender Rhodes Electric Piano, ARP Pro 2600 Synthesizer, ARP String Ensemble Cornell Dupree: Electric Guitar Eric Gale: Electric Guitar Gordon Edwards: Electric Bass Steve Gadd: Drums Ralph MacDonald: Congas, Percussion Recorded May 11, 15, 1976 at Vanguard Studio, NYC
This is the kernel of Organic Smooth Jazz featuring the gentler side of Michael Breaker, an Organic Real Jazz Aficionado of first class exuberance; he who took up the saxophone cudgel of John Coltrane and deposited safely in the hearts of all true music lovers.
It's regrettable that: 1) Mike had been given the slot herein to extend on his Organic Real Jazz improvisation in this cool, smooth, funky groove of a song. (It takes lots of skill to flavor a Pop song with Organic Real Jazz Improvisational fragments. Stanley Turrentine [RIP] was the best at this feat; and so is Nelson Rangel ) 2) Michael hadn't done much more of this commercially successful stuff - concurrently with his Organic Real Jazz purity.

Khurram Aziz: Sorry, "Bumnote"!😂😞 British and American Standard English can pose quite a challenge, and of course, a communicative handicap to the unlettered and uneducated waif, rather to the ostentatious and academically retarded "Bumnote" Sorry, "Bumnote"!😂😞
Khurram Aziz: Hallelujah! Alleluia! Khurram Aziz, I DO ENJOY your vaunting [ I quote ]: " ...I had the best elite private education on the planet...and I was] top of the class in all subjects to the chagrin of my fellow alumni ...", although your vainglory strikes me as being "not merely somewhat" hyperbolic; it is gross self-adulation, narcissism and pedantry in the vein of President-elect Donald J. Trump, charlatan extraordinaire. "... never mind", I am overjoyed that you have arrogated to and for YOURSELF self-promotion to the "top-of-the-class echelon of poetic superfluities with your: pedantic, elite, chagrin, inept, alumni, misconstrued ... Consequently, Social Promotion is accorded you with "automaticity"! A bientot!
Khurram Aziz: Regrets: Having recently discovered and heard you in speech on the internet, I realized that English Language is far from being the communicative vehicle with which you are comfortable. I should not have been so jocularly amused and "entertained" by your demonstrated lack of even a modicum of it - English Language NOT being your FIRST language. Congratulations for attempting, however! A 12-year-old Rabbi once said, in Standard English, "Practice makes Perfect." Be good now! P.S.: Don't permit your "inept[itude]" to "misconstrue" MY "Bumnotes"! They are merely supplementary "compliments"; aren't they?
Sounds fabulous melodic. Congratulations for this lovely version. Sublime music and so well played. Listening to thisI I must be enjoying a happy soul. Relaxing time.
Ahhhh, the sexy soulful sounds of the sax, just beautiful, and Cornell, so very smooth, you’ve got it down, keyboard perfection! Thank you very much for your cool sounds, loved every moment
Amo essas músicas. Me causam bem estar. Sensação de tranquilidade. Cantada de voltar no tempo. Ah!!!!. Tanta coisa boa. Cantada de estar com alguém agradável. Conversando sobre algo bom. Lembrando de coisas boas. Enfim. Sei lá só sei que é bom .
What you are listening to is freedom, no matter what is being done or said has nothing to do with what you hear, not listen to but hear, your heart will never ever fool you, the heart embraces and the mind runs...YOUR HEART HAS CHARACTER, NOT YOUR MIND...LOL.
That was special, everyone was cooking with gas. The bass player was messing with me, he was funking it up at times though it was smooth. The way the sax was laying of had me gasping for more.
Gordon Edwards of Stuff is on bass. The band in fact is Stuff, with pianist/leader Will Boulware replacing Richard Tee, plus Michael Brecker added on sax and Ralph McDonald, conga, all top level studio guys.
@ Paul Sheehan The band is Stuff, with session leader Will Boulware replacing Richard Tee on piano and Michael Brecker added on sax. This tune was a regular part of their repertoire at Mikell's, but they never recorded it under their own name. Cornell Dupree's guitar solo is one of his best.
You should give a listen to James' newer version with his trio. D - Billy Kilson, B - Michael Palazzo. Best in the pocket groove I've ever heard by an upright player. And he's about 30 years old. Let's see, what body part can I cut off to sound like him? Hmmmm?
@petesheehan and claragary 1). Michael always counted the money 2) He and his brother Randy were/are excellent businessmen with acumen. 3) most importantly, Michael always poured his professional and personal heart into every project he recorded. He stated many times that anything on recording was forever and he didn't ever like being embarrassed by something he was on. He did record a large number of late 70s disco tracks for various NYC local disco and R&B singers that were sometimes funky and sometimes cheesy but his contributions were always outstanding. This recording is a classic Cornell Dupree/Eric Gale groove. Very easy on the ears and Michael plays it very tastefully. Enjoy!
I had this album when it was new in 1977, Will Boulware's Rainbow "Crystal Green". Best track on the album, as I recall, a great Gene McDaniels' composition. Ironic that while Boulware is the session leader, in retrospect, he is likely the least notable name among this band of crossover jazz session aces.
Michael Brecker is one of my heroes on the sax, but this, out of strong beat timing, is not of my taste. Maybe once in a while, but I think it had too much of a laid back out of timing performance. Definitely, I'm no one to judge such a master musician, but sincerely, this is the only performance that I can't give all the stars to Michael. I do this with the an utmost respect, because Michael Brecker was and is still a sax master to all of us sax players and musicians, RIP.( Sorry for this one Mick)
claragary Take yourself seriously much? This is perfect and your profound pretention at 'reviewing' this is beyond silly. "Out of beat timing"??!!! "too much of a laid back out of timing performance"!? What the f..k does this mean? Can you try to find out more about music and how the English language works and try again to say something that begins to make sense. It's funk, and the feel and tempo is perfect. Too bad you can't appreciate it.
+claragary Wow. You're thinking too much. Haven't you ever played a tune where you're not the prime soloist? And if you criticize this song then you're crazy. I say crazy because you obviously haven't heard the whole album because MB absolutely tears up 2 songs with long fade solos. 2 of my favorite solos ever. Early MB from the 70s.
+claragary while I don't agree with you, hey man you can dig or not dig as you please. At least you did it with respect to the man. Cheers. BTW I LOVE this track!!!
Me suis-je trompé ? Certainement. dsl. Je peux me tromper.

Excellently chronicled, and well said!
4) "must HAVE". "must of" is not acceptable proper English.
@@sumoblues easy to confuse the two when must have is spoken. It often sounds like must of.

I do believe the guitarist on this track is Eric Gale, not Cornell Dupree
No sorry it is definitely not.
That's Cornell, both guys' styles are very distinct.
Love you
J'adorrre

Non pas que linterprétation est vraiment bonne. Mais j'adore Eric Gale entre autre.
Thumbs down you can kiss turkey but this is fantastic music sorry you can't enjoy it

Michael Brecker, no Michael Brecher.
The sax players sounds great... but he isn't Brecker.
In saying that, it's a beautiful version of this song.
Wut? it IS Brecker, Bro (pun intended)
Sounded like Brecker held himself back. I didn't hear the usual Brecker solo. Very restrained, I think.
