Awesome Video, I seen a cheap M1 at a local gun shop and picked it up, but it wouldn't extract the case and I didn't know where to start and was afraid I needed to get the tool, but your video is very clear and instructional!
Thank you so much for a great video. It rates very high overall...five star including the narrative. I would add the M1A is slightly more difficult as the extractor plunger needed to be compressed as well during the install procedure. As you could not push the extractor in with thumb pressure. Had another depress the ejector plunger [little one behind the extractor and it worked perfectly. Once again Thank You!
Wow. Fairly easy compared to the M1 Carbine even though they are mechanically very very similar. The biggest issue with M1 carbine bolt re-assembly is the extractor spring plunger. It is very small and needs to be replace in exactly the right orientation. For us older people with challenged eyesight and not so nimble fingers that spring plunger can be a real ordeal to replace. I know. I know. There is a tool that makes it “easier” but who wants to pay 25-50 dollars for a tool you use maybe one or twice in a lifetime!
Very good video instruction! Thank you for posting this. I’ve volunteered to clean several M1 Garands for my VFW. Apparently during ceremonies the rifles are not firing. I believe the last person to clean these rifles didn’t put them back together properly
Hey thanks for this. I bought a very expensive tool to do this and it broke on the first attempt. My M1A is supposed to be field serviceable like its military counterpart, and carrying the tool around would not be a good option. I learned a lot from this.
Anyone having or had a issue with a M1A SOCOM 16 CQB not ejecting every other round. Doing it by hand and removing the mag after the round is chamberd. Out of 10 rounds roughly it will eject maybe 6 or 7 times other times it wont. But If it doesnt eject I can send the bolt home again and most times it will then eject. I bought gun used so not sure if the 20 round mags are SA or CMI. The gun is custom painted so idk if those markings would be stamped in or printed. And when there is like 2 rounds left in the mag it just shoots them out the top of gun. But getting back to the FTE issue if it leaves the round in the chamber I can barely tilt the rifle back and the casing falls out with ease on to the floor so it's not like its stuck in there and gas bolt is vertical. I recently cleaned the gun really good but didnt do a cleaning of what's in this video. Could the extractor be sticking since I dont know how many miles is on it or is it just a bad extractor?
Sorry to hear the difficulties with the M1A bolts. I use this method on my M1A bolt without problems but it is harder to press the ejector in and push the ejector in place, but it does work.
Not so good on my M1A. The plunger for the extractor spring broke in half while removing the extractor. I used the 30-06 case method to put it back together.
I have an m1 that gave lighter and light hits on the primer until it stopped hitting at all, do you think taking apart the bolt would help me figure out the problem? I have already cleaned the gun and soaked parts in solvent.

On the M1A it is almost impossible to put the extractor back in because if its plunger. I could not press down the extractor with my thumb like everyone in videos I've seen can. I used the 30-06 method. I don't see how I can do it even with a tool because the extractor will still refuse to go down.
What size of punch did you use to drop the pin on the m-1 bolt please ..and is that the same for the m1-a bolt..or is there a substitute for the punch..
You pronounce Garand's name correctly. In the book "Hatcher's Notebook", Col Julian Hatcher who knew Garand very well makes a point that Garand's name rhymes with errand. Thanks for your video. Ga-Rand as everyone says is incorrect.
Right on the money, Brad, poor Mr. Garand, who called his creation after himself, explained how it was pronounced, while everyone else, for some weird reason, put the accent on the last syllabe instead. I guess stubborn people are stubborn, and the rest just didn't know better. No internet, no cellphones, no way to mass-communicate something undoubtly considered not as relevant as some dude in Germany going on a conquering spree.
It’s even easier and simpler to just use a coin and insert the edge of the coin between the extractor base and bottom edge of bolt face and twist. Just keep your thumb over the ejector to prevent it from shooting across the room.
Could have easily shown this process without having to be dismissive of Brownells. That's a great tool they offer, especially if you need to do this on a regular basis!
Ive watched 4 different videos, this is the best by far, thank you 👍🏼

I was searching for servicing a Ruger Mini 14 bolt and your video came up. This is very helpful as they are similar. You really know your stuff!
Thanks for the video, saved me $60 (+ S/H) for the bolt disassembly tool.
Thank you! It worked as expected on my bolt!👍
clear & concise. good lighting too. thank you.
Thank you!!! Very clear and to the point instructions. I love it.

And you didn’t need to tell us your life story before hand...awesome vid....
Resorting to cutting coils since as a lefty the final 4 cases eject directly at my right eye. Thank you!!

I learned a lot from this.
Doesn't the M1A have storage in the stock for a tool?
Thanks for posting this video. Any other Garand videos you could post would be great !
Thank you very much from France : - ) . Nice, clear and effective !
Great video right to the point and very descriptive.
Great video! I couldn't get the extractor in without a tool so I used my leatherman
You made no mention of the extractor spring and little plunger tip on the spring. I could see it staying in it's hole after you removed the extractor.
Not sure of the size, I just grabbed one of the non-brass punches from my punch set that was slightly smaller than the retainer pin on the extractor.
Very helpful demonstration

There's always one...
Check the Wikipedia entry for John Garand and look under "Pronunciation." You decide...
Brilliant. Simply brilliant
Good job, nice video.
Very solid video. Thank you

trying to push the ejector in is kind of insane. I've been fighting to get it in for awhile now.
Very nice instructional.
Not so good on my M1A. The plunger for the extractor spring broke in half while removing the extractor. I used the 30-06 case method to put it back together.
Well done
How did you snip the spring, I have a 7.62x51 nato garand, brand new spring, haven't done yet
is the ejector plunger supposed to be attached to its spring? because mine are two separate pieces...
Is like to see the m1 bolt done
Thanks

Great video. Thanks.
So an M1 and an M1A (M14) have both plunger ejectors AND Mechanical Ejectors???
Thank you. Very helpful
This is very good info.
Thanks for posting, very good.

I used the same size punch for both the M1 and M1A. As far as size, I just used the largest punch I had from my kit that would fit into the hole.
What size/type of punch is that?
Nice video
Merci
THAAAAANK YOUUUU

I need the tool. Only one good hand to work with.
LOL at anybody who paid 70 dollars for a tool to do this. That is about 100 rounds of ammo you could've spent on.
😂
Nice video.
Vary helpful. Thanks
👍
Thank you.
...AUSGEZEICHNET!!!!!!

Very similar to an AK bolt disassembly
Almost like a ak bolt dissassemble

3/32" punch
my bolt exploded still
you called everything by the wrong name at first, lol
You need to edit this video and say Garand the right way.
You pronounce Garand incorrectly.
Just did it! Your method worked amazing, thanks
