M1 Carbine Bolt & Magazine Disassembly & Reassembly !!!

  • I completely disassemble the bolt on this historic carbine. It is a heck of a job to do at a table with no vise. lol. What fun would it be to do it any other way. I love a challenge and this is a tough job to do without the specialty tool made to do this bolt and secondly a vise at a work bench would make it a lot easier also. I at least this helps someone who needs to know the process of disassembly and we also tackle the magazine and change the spring in it. In the next video of this series, we will reassemble the carbine into working condition and hopefully end it at the range with a nice shoot. I thank everyone for watching and subscribing. This would be a boring video for someone not interested in taking their bolt down but it is a job I have to do to change the weak extractor spring. Thanks again and God Bless.

The next Carbine I get in the shop, I will make a new video. I recently sold my IBM and sold the Plainfield awhile back. I am just going a different direction with my collection and stream lining. Thanks. : )

This video was a great help. I had to replace the extractor and had no idea how to go about it. After getting the parts in the mail, this project took about 15 minutes.
    Thanks!!!

They become a lot easier the more you do it but I will confess, I usually use the takedown tool, it makes it a piece of cake. I did it this way in the video to help those without tools. Thanks.

@Bandanabandito1 I am pretty much a part time gunsmith, more an armorer but soon to be certified by a few different major gun makers. I changed out all the springs because they were worn out and it works great. I do need to change a couple of magazine springs though. The headspace is perfect. Go and no go gauges make checking headspace a breeze. Thanks brother, it is appreciated. : )

@waterairsunplant If you are talking about the raised portion of the circular bolt face, the answer is no, the round will sit inside the circular bolt face under the extractor. The firing pin should just clear the bolt face not the raised circular section. If it strike the round to deep it will penetrate the primer completely and cause gases to be blown backward and then you have real issues and dangerous ones. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the video, and you are a very skilled person to be able to do this without the proper tools! Your explanations were very helpful, but the camera wasn't zoomed in enough to see the detail to which you were referring most of the time. If you do more videos, maybe try to have two perspectives, one for the workspace and one for the real small detail.
Anyways, great vid again, thanks! It was very helpful when I was replacing the extractor.

Chromefreak123- Thank you for the info on the bolt brake down. Can you tell me if you know where I may find replacement springs for my magazine, I have taken out the spring in the past and stretched it out some and after a little battle to put it back the magazine had lots of pushing power, how ever I think the time has come for me to replace it, so if you know where I may purchase the spring I will be so pleased, if not thank you anyhow for the info.

should the tip of the firing pin clear the circular portion on the bolt that faces the primer on the cartridge? My M1 will not fire and I think the bolt may be the problem.

So this is very informative and exactly what I'm needing but when you edited out the part where you were struggling to put the spring on the ejector, you edit out the part where you put the plunger back into the bolt, showing the orientation of plunger's 90º and 45º angles to the bolt.

  • @ChromeFreak123

it can be difficult. if you can't do it, maybe you can order the Carbine bolt tool that will help you bigtime.

@waterairsunplant did you check for a broken firing pin? that may be your problem. if not id take it to a gunsmith and get its headspace checked.

The spring can be incorrectly replaced, either up side down, or backwards, or both. Your video isn't clear about the orientation.

Too much extraneous talking. Just get to it, Sir. Thank you for the video, but you're sort of wasting my time while I'm listening to you tell us how you're doing this without tools, how you don't need the tool, how you're trying to help us, how you... how you......jeez. After a long rant, you say, "ok, let's do this..." and then you go on another long ramble about how long or short of a time it normally takes you. Good Lord.
