      I had my 1998 Rover 211 on the road last year (swapped over to my mighty 214 this year).
      60bhp and far from fast, but it handles well and was a great vehicle for my first year on the road actually.
      Overtaking requires plenty of planning, and you have to be in the right gear before you can see if the road's clear, because every second is valuable.

    I find it is a lot better/ easier if you hold back a bit from the car in front to give you room to accelerate into the overtake, to minimise the amount of time you're on the other side of the road

    • @tomj.
      @tomj. 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +28

      In theory, advanced driving states that you should be moving out to the offside, confirming the view, then accelerating, rather than accelerating before moving out. Doing so could mean that if you start accelerating, move out and the view actually isn't there, you have to slam on to avoid going into the back of the car in front.
      In reality, this is often easier said than done especially in lower-powered cars.

    • @edewaal97
      @edewaal97 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@tomj. That's true. I also miss the que for if it isn't clear, just fall back behind the car. For example the overtake of the bus. The overtake of the car was fine, but the overtake of the bus should've been broken off. Stay behind, create room by slowing down a lot, wait for visibility and try again. The Dutch police has a couple of video's scattered around about the "voortgezette rijopleiding".

      I do this, and also never overtake unless I got view from the original lane and I'm 100% sure I can accelerate, change lanes, overtake, and come to my lane, all as fast as I can and with lots of room to the car im passing.

    • @BadgerBob
      @BadgerBob 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This is bad because it means your lose to much time catching the vehicle. You should be closer to the car, near the centre line, in a gear lower than you would normally for that speed to give maximum acceleration. Then move to the OS for view, and accelerate past if it’s on. That’s the safe and efficient way.

    • @frodej6640
      @frodej6640 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BadgerBob You do not lose time catching the vehicle. The way I see it is that the time spent accelerating happens before you change lane, so that the time doing the overtake is done with maximum preferred speed all the time, shortening the time and distance to a minimum. But doing this, you must consider that you might call off the overtake in the last second if situation has changed. This leads to poor driving and poor fuel economy. It is imperative that this must be done with safety in mind and not being reckless.
      On busy roads, or roads with few opportunities, making the most of the little road you have is good. That said, I don't do this that often myself. I like to have some distance when overtaking.

      The problem is that they do drive over the speed limit, but only in the same places you want to overtake. A slight bend in the road and they might be going 50kph instead of 80kph, but when you get to a straight where you want to overtake they are going 85-90! Incredibly frustrating, makes you have to go way past the speed limit to get past before you hit more curves.

    Even 200HP is pretty much.
    I remember when I was trying to make overtakes inside car that have 80HP or even less.
    Have no idea if it is an English word for such technique:
    You drive behind a car you want to overtake.
    You know or see, that there will be (or might be) a long straight road after a corner, so you slow down a bit before corner, to build separation distance.
    On the corner you are increasing your speed, so when you both are going out of it, you are just behind your victim and you have speed greater than him.
    You check the road and make decision - breaks and slow down, because you have no option to overtake OR keep increasing speed and start overtake.
    You also use it on a long straight road, when you see cars coming from opposite direction. Increase distance when they are coming, then speed up and jump on their lane just after passing last one of them. With speed difference already build - without need of just building it with your small engine.

    • @VinnesRC
      @VinnesRC 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I would call it the "sling shot" technique, very effective.

  • @Tom_Hadler
    @Tom_Hadler 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    200bhp is plenty enough for overtakes in nearly all normal situations in UK. Depends on car weight of course. Although more is welcome.
    It actually is the torque you need. Audi TT 197bhp, turbo torque...never had an issue overtaking. Almost overtake at will.
    I used to get by with 120 with a free revving engine, but more power than that is certainly very helpful.
    I think if I had 500bhp I'd overshoot

    The craziest thing I've seen were how people overtake in a small country called Abkhazia (between Russia and Georgia). I doubt even half of them have licenses but they all drive probably 200+ hp Lexuses, Toyotas and Nissans and they absolutely dont give a single F about safety, they can overtake when the big line of oncoming traffic is coming up or have a train of overtakers, etc. Pretty crazy and scary to drive around them, id call it the "YOLO overtake". Also, one time there was a truck driving very slowly, one car decided to overtake but it was too slow for another guy who decided to overtake him using the curb of the opposite lane XD

    It’s not just the horsepower, but also the available torque that allows for quick acceleration for a safe and quick overtake. The M2 with manual transmission has 406 lb-ft of torque making it a breeze in 3rd gear. Unfortunately many automatics have a lag in downshifting before they accelerate, especially in comfort mode.

    There's also the aspect of junctions/driveways. Obviously don't overtake near a junction, but what about driveways?
    I guarantee not everyone will look left when turning left out of a driveway, serious consequences if they collide with a car that's overtaking. (5:19 as an example)
    Also, you can't see the indicators of the car infront of your car when you're doing a double overtake. What if they're indicating to turn right in to a driveway? Okay technically they shouldn't do the manouevre, but it would be a tricky situation, they'd either have to slam on their brakes so they don't overshoot the driveway, or keep driving forwards.
    Just a few things that popped into my mind.

  • @frodej6640
    @frodej6640 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It wasn't directly mentioned. I find having more horsepower make overtaking safer, since I do not need to be that much over the speed limit. Let's say you have a good distance to overtake. With a 120hp I often found myself doing the overtake 70kph over the speed limit just to get done with it in time, because it took forever to accelerate. What started out as a good distance, became too short quickly. Now I have 380hp, and I do the same overtake barely 20kph over, with loads of distance to spare.
    More horsepower can be used to do your things safe, it also make you keep the license easier.

    @MickDrivesCars as you now have a BMW what is your opinion about the ASD system (active sound design). I would say turn it off because it's fake but then because of emissions rules my car has an exhaust particulate filter (petrol not diesel) which takes allot of the sound out of it. So even though it's fake the ASD system is kind of nice but i'd prefer it was real!

    Problem I have is that 80% of roads near me aren't good for over taking because of either being narrow or having a lot of bends/hills.

  • @maximilianmustermann5763
    @maximilianmustermann5763 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Are a lot of your country roads so damn narrow in GB? If I encountered a road as narrow as this in Germany (they are very rare) I would probably not overtake at all because I wouldn't trust in my fellow driver's capability to stay in their lane. Because against all stereotypes, a lot of Germans aren't good drivers, especially when it comes to things like staying in narrow lanes or judging the width of their vehicle.

    4:13 lets be serious though:
    a lot of people speed a little bit when overtaking and slow down to the speed limit after that.
    im not saying you should, im just saying that many people do that

    Mick, I agree with what you are saying, but I didn't see you consistently using your indicators and neither did you mention it or checking your mirrors for that matter. Let's suppose an even faster car or a bike has just arrived behind you and is about to overtake you. And the vehicles in front, you need to give them every possible opportunity to understand your intentions and in doing so minimise the possibility of there being an accident.

    I'm limited by 75hp but the people in front of me are always so slow, I know the street I drive exactly, it is downhill, you don't need to press any gas and go 80+km/h, but they always break in the curves.
    But I can't overtake them, no acceleration, and waste of gas...

    I commend you for keeping the bus pass in and sharing your learning. So, how can we help you move to the next level? Ok, firstly you might bring the concept of space into play to tie together your comments on vision and risks to the sides. At the end of the day you don’t want to run out of ‘space’. Then we have communication, where is it Mick? Do we need to communicate with another progressive driver behind or should we use our approach and move into contact and launch positions to help drivers read our intentions before the overtake, do we need a warning of presence before commuting to pass a bus in a tight section of road? Remember that power brings safety, you don’t have to carry momentum, how about ‘catch, match, position, check, dispatch’. The check is your chance to see more and communicate from your launch position having already moved out. Save a ‘slide by’ momentum pass for big wide spaces. Also, with 500bhp, have s think about when you use it, as you steer out or once you have moved out and straightened up? Don’t forget the golden rule ‘only overtake if you can complete the pass in half the distance you can see to be clear - there may be another Mick coming the other way!

      @MickDrivesCars  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's great honestly
      Really well geared, especially 6th is super long which is ideal for travelling. 2nd is a touch too long topping out at 72 - I would have loved if this was closer to 60 so I could enjoy another gear change without breaking the speed limit.
      The actual lever action is good but not great - best BMW I've driven but not as good as honda type-r products. 2-3 change in particular is tricky, but once you learn it, it's fine.
      Clutch is good but not great. Easy to get off the line/drive smoothly. Clutch delay valve/rev hang is present but not terrible and you can get used to it.

    Your road and following positioning is poor. That first example which you didn’t take was on, if you had have taken a decent position. And your forgetting one of the most basic and important aspects, and that’s your ‘landing zone’ - at the last moment before you pull back in, while on the O/S, you should still be safe and have a clear road (the 50/50 rule). That’s hard to judge for a new driver. Also you mention junctions, but this needs more discussion as it’s where many RTC’s happen - mainly on O/S junctions, as people will pull out without looking left. Which is what you did at 5.19 - that was dangerous.
