  • David Bowie • News Conference • Sebel Town House Hotel • Sydney, Australia • November 1978
    An approximately seven-minute interview with David Bowie, in Sydney 1978, by members of the Australian press.
    Bowie was in Sydney to play two shows at the Sydney Showgrounds, November 24th and 25th, 1978. The shows were part of the Australia and New Zealand leg of his Isolar II World Tour.
    The interview was held at the Sebel Town House Hotel. The Sebel was in its day, Australia’s most recognized celebrity hotel, and Bowie and the band would reside there for the duration of their Sydney stay, November 24th to 29th.
    The Bowie Downunder page has some great info about the Australian / New Zealand '78 tour:
    bowiedownunder.com/lowheroes/1.html
    After the interview, I’ve added a short bit of footage of Bowie performing live from the first Sydney show, November 24th. It is the only known live footage from the Australia tour. The footage originates from Peter Green, who shot it himself at the show: • David Bowie-Sydney Sho...
    From the comments on Peter’s upload:
    78Bowman: Peter, what’s the back-story to the footage?
    Peter Green: found an old movie camera at my parents, didn't know if it worked. Went with my best friend Mark, we really wanted front row so pretended to be part of the Pony show at the 2nd showgrounds next to the one where Bowie played, walked around with the horses for 30 mins and sneaked over a metal fence, pretended we were meant to be at the show, and basically hid in the toilets for 2 hrs till a minute before gates opened and ran to the front row.
    Nacho: The obvious question, Peter - is there any more?
    Peter Green: Sadly no, I was very young and we didn't even know if the camera worked, the first roll of film was used to cover Bowie, Cheap Trick, The Angels, Skyhooks and some mates... and the cartridge only ran for 3 minutes.
    Peter’s footage contained no original sound. So I identified what Bowie was singing in the footage, and here I have synced it to an audience recording of that show.
    Hope you dig it!
    More videos to follow, so please keep your electric eye on me babe!

      The word ”New wave” was only a buzzword for record companies and promoters to simplify and capitalize on the music that was made during this era.

    • @hazelwray5307
      @hazelwray5307 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Elias-no9fy It wasn't merely a marketing ploy. I think there was an art school experimental and intellectual bent, inspired by the likes of Brian Eno and the work he did with Roxy Music and Bowie. A desire to make something new without the baggage of rock or the grandiosity of prog.

    • @johnweingartner3415
      @johnweingartner3415 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Elias-no9fy He is genius. He was probably one the first to apply that term to music. New Wave was a common term for film movements in the 60’s into the 80’s which I’m sure Bowie was well aquatinted, given his prolific study of everything. To connect the two is pretty smart. Basically every New Wave was a rejection of convention in favor of experimentation. You had French New Wave, Italian Neorealism, New Hollywood or American New Wave... a lot of countries went through their own new waves.

    I had a poster of him in that white shirt and the "waders" up on my wall in high school, what happiness!! And, as usual, his musical taste is impeccable. The Talking Heads' debut album came out in November of 1977, and the first Dire Straits album was released in February 1978. It was a good time in music, and it is great to hear him discuss it. He stayed so curious and open. Remarkable man.

    • @evanwright9016

      TH has another connection: Eno.
      I guess the reason as to why Brian & David's relationship (as friends for a time, not at all professionally) petered out immediately after '"Heroes"' was finished was because he was fulfilling commitments first for Ultravox's debut. And for 'Fear of Music' and a then embryonic 'My Life in the Bush of Ghosts' all while putting up with the comparatively tedious 'Lodger' sessions.
      Not a slam against it, but it was clear Eno's head would be increasingly in producer mode since executive duties would usually be split between him, Visconti, and Bowie. Also, I think it was time for him to make his impression on some new blood. Who loved/appreciated him for whatever he'll be doing. There was no doubt people in Bowie's camp who still held him up to the work he'd done with Roxy Music. Most likely expecting something artsy, posh, & gay-coded when they were presented with 'Low'. Bowie's the same way. He never wanted to be known for what he pioneered that eventually became fashionable 4 years on.

    I love how he says he's not playing a character, but he kinda still is. He says "music doesn't play an important part in my life" and claims he doesn't have a big record collection, but he would later write a piece called "Confessions Of A Vinyl Junkie" about his very large record collection. I think this character was a tortured artist trying to find an escape from his reality. So I suppose in that sense, it was David Bowie being David Bowie. I don't know how close it was to his real personality though. I don't think he ever stopped playing characters, they just became more subtle and less obvious. The Serious Moonlight era character was a globe trotting pop megastar. I'd say it was the same character until Tin Machine where that character was sort of killed off in favour of "the singer from Tin Machine".

    Happy to be among those who are giving a new look and listen to Bowie, in college twenty years ago he was a favorite and at age nine or ten, fourth or fifth grade, over thirty years ago, I took a magazine article about him to show and tell (how was that interpreted by Mrs. Winesette, or was it Mrs. Martin?) and all through the eighties I heard his radio hits but nothing else, intrigued by the characters, wishing I were someone else with different friends etc.... And then a little later a friend turned me on to the first Tin Machine record which I thought interesting, I was written up one night in the college dorm for blasting Bowie, well, actually the door was rapped on during Careful With That Axe, Eugen by Pink Floyd but my set list began with Bowie and a stolen bottle of vodka, now as I listen to his final few I am awakening to his great humanism and sophistication over and above the mere surface dazzle of his poppishness; he is a commenter of commenters, an eye on the world of pop even as Warhol was but in Bowie I find a depth lacking in Warhol's work apart from the man who may not be known - that Cale/Reed album Songs for Drella is wonderful though. I read a bio of Warhol and I found his life heartbreakingly sad, despite his success, but thank the Lord of the Catholic church that he did succeed in his way for he'd have been a sad statistic had he not; not so of Bowie, a tougher act altogether

One of my favorite photos of him was by Lord Snowdon, where he's standing with one foot on a pedestal, the other foot against his other leg, and he's just got on a striped T-shirt and linen trousers. Most of these reporter's would have only found out a few hours before that they were to go interview David Bowie, hence no preparation time to create interesting questions, but as true Aussie' s at the time came up with some dopey questions off the top of their heads, keeping in mind no way to research him in depth back then like we do now. Notice he says new wave. smart move on his part, b/c that term was just starting to germinate in '78 & of course he would not only later be associated w/ it, but be seen as one of its vanguard leaders w/ low & later scary monsters.... bowie had a keen eye for market shifts. He also knew how to get himself placed w/in a genre. the only sustained rival I can think of in music in those same regards wouldve been jim morrison who also was a genius in understanding public perception & info dissemination.

    It's interesting to hear him talk about his hatred of flying. There is a german chat show interview from the 90's where he talks about spending 5 days on the QE2 travelling between Europe and the US so he must really have hated flying.

    Dire Straits. The archetypal Punk band.

    Bowie gave up his characters to the dismay of the press who still wanted him to be ziggy. Still quite the happy go lucky intellectual

      stacy youst well yes, but to put that in context... at the time of that interview Dire Straits were an unknown band. Their first single Sultans of Swing wouldn’t become a hit until the following year. Check them out in 1978, they are a bit like Television th-cam.com/video/Z4Hzjca9rkk/w-d-xo.html

    It is kind of sad, I got the feeling the journalists are trying to catch him off guard...they are really disappointed to be facing a man and not some kind of novelty.

    Anyone who saw this Bowie for the first time would never believe he found fame by being a flamboyant bi-sexual glam rock god! He seems so normal. I guess it's all an act of some sort for him and he gathers people around him to make it work.
