23:39 I see that red LMS mogul hiding in the back! Man, that was the second model locomotive I got and I absolutely loved it. Brings back memories. Cheers, Sam.
These are quite cheap to buy but they are heavy and run really well. I have an LNER black one, which is probably more prototypical (only two K3s were ever painted apple green, and not for long at all). My only minor quibble is that the tender can be fiddly to hook up.
Great review as always, I love how your being more creative in editing with your logos and titles to your other social media sites. And the biggest surprise was the outside box depicting the loco as black but the loco being green !
Thanks very much for that mate - haha glad you enjoyed that too mate! Yeah - that was very typical of Bachmann in those days! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Beautiful model. While it maybe not on any of the company’s I model and it’s out of period, it’s very smart and the LNER green is very sharp. Not seen a review video elsewhere on TH-cam on this class of locomotive so I really enjoyed this. All the best, Clint
The model you have is the reworked model 8 pin DCC,odd that its in the old style box the other two which came out at the time are in the new style box,the first 10 introduced on the GNR had the GN cab as well has the enormous, for the time of the 6 foot dia boiler, the class was adopted has a LNER standard class they were very powerful, but also very rough riding locos, until the V2 was introduced they were first choice for express freight work, always in a black livery, except for the one you have reviewed, which got the full green LNER livery , applied just before nationlisation, the big let down are the undersized driving wheels, but it is an old model, but it does capture the chunky looks of the original, and it is a very good runner.
Hi Sam, The K3 fell into the early 2000s era of new models which lacked some finer detail. It was never produced earlier as a split chassis a la the V2 and B1. It looks odd because of the massive boiler on an otherwise small loco. Definitely on my list to get.
Hey Jim, thanks a lot for this - yeah I looked it up since and found the same thing - it certainly explains a lot!! I can recommend this overall! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The K3 is actually a (relatively) new tooling, being from around 2005. This is after Bachmann abandoned the split chassis mechanisms and so this model never had to be redesigned with a new chassis.
Yeah that's what I found too - not as old as you'd think! It's definitely much better for not being a split-chassis engine! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Interesting choice of era - 1946-47 only (the cabside number reflects Thompson's 1946 renumbering scheme). And out of 200-odd K3s, No1935 was the only one to wear full LNER Apple Green at any time, although the earliest members of the class did wear full GN livery prior to the Grouping.
A fine looking loco Sam, but what I like about your reviews, is that you look much deeper into the models being reviewed and it gives us viewers far more information when considering a purchase, so thanks again for your brilliant review....Bob
I'm a confirmed diesel enthusiast but there's something exquisite about the Doncaster green livery. You've almost tempted me into buying one, and that's saying something LOL
I’m going to buy one of these for 66 pounds in a few days. Albeit it being a BR K3 (No.61932 to be exact). She will look good with my LNER W1 Fleet and my LMS Coronation Class Streamlined Pacific Fleet.
Well, the K3s were known for being enormous machines back in the day, and in BR days they were seen as baby V2s, and they were given the same freight rating: 6F. However, due to their weight, they were often seen on duties you could see a V2 doing, including express passenger trains, although I doubt it would have been over too long of a distance with them there tiny wheels!
Definitely a pretty good value for this thing - Just enough detail to look the part. I can't remember which K-series it was, but apparently early crews called these moguls "Ragtimers", since they weren't used to seeing goods locos with fully exposed motion like that. That coal load is pretty cool, too!
Thanks a lot Lewis - I love them too! I agree, they are pricey - wait for the Hatton's one though, it's going to be far superior to the existing ones from Bachmann & Hornby, and they're cheaper too! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Intertersting how the last set of driving wheels are in the back near the cab leaving a gap between it and the middle driving wheel but over all a beautiful looking steam engine
tbh if a loco doesn’t have any tender pickups, that’s not really a problem. That means, the loco itself already have relatively good pickups excluding the tender. Most loco have tender pickups because that’s where the speaker for the DCC sound.
Hmmm, it doesn't necessarily mean that the loco already has relatively good pickups - they're often no better than others with tender pickups! In general - you can never have too many pickups, so I'll always complain if expensive models don't have tender ones! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
that is a very nice model indeed, love the less coal might be it was running in the 60's and that's all it was allowed? not often you see an tender that empty of coal thought for a moment someone before you had ripped the coal out as it was either highly detailed or just needed an engine with small coal in it for something else, for the prce its a big high but in that colour i can see why
Great video as always, something to distract me from rebuilding my Hornby Schools after a traction tyre failure! Perhaps the wheels/track might be a bit dirty, or the pickups may have a bit of grime on them.
Hi Sam, nice model that. Thought I'd let you know that Rails of Sheffield are doing a LNER black version for a bargain price of £84.50. The green is more desirable for sure but still worth a look.
Thanks very much for that! Yeah that is much more like it, though obviously it's worth paying a bit more for the green!! ;D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I think you are right in your opinion of this Bachman engine I am surprised about how good it looks .I still a little wary about Bachman engines and how long they last .
I must admit I'm a bit confused on what to think about this engine. Since I've had two LNER green engines for at least two years (an A1 class 4-6-2 and a B17 class 4-6-0), I can't help thinking that the K3 is a very odd-looking locomotive, mainly due to the boiler, which I feel looks far too big for a 2-6-0. Why Gresley designed them that way is anyone's guess. I'm somewhat tempted to get the BR Black version, because I think the 98 pounds Hattons are selling them for is a reasonable price, and I think she would look nice alongside my Hornby K1. But my thoughts on the K3's appearance still stands. On a sidenote, I remember seeing this exact same LNER K3 at a model railway exhibition, which was in January 2018.
haha that's understandable mate - yes it's very odd looking indeed! And yeah the £98 brand new is very good for the BR black one - well worth it I'd say! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam I have just had to cancel my membership because I need to pay for something really important but I haven’t been renewed for this months purchase. How will get renewed the £4.99. Next month I will repay to be a member
I loved this loco. I liked this as much as the B-12 and the H1 Atlantic you showed off a while back. It is a shame that none of these wasn't preserved. I hate seeing historic buildings/vehicles bite the dust.
That's great to hear mate - yeah it definitely has the same quality about it - it's fantastic really! :D Me too - it's always very sad indeed :( Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks Daniel! It behaved much better after I took some coaches of - so I'll leave it until she's due to be serviced now! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Ooh blimey Ben - sorry to hear that mate - maybe you'll need to redesign the track?? I'd suggest not trying to do running sessions like mine - try to create your own style, and build it up to be what you want it to be!! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hello Sam . I have a Bachmann modified Hall class with split axle wheels where can I get replacements ? They are the ones with square ends that attach to wheels . I'm in the U.S. and can't find them anywhere. Must of been a bad design all three wheels are cracked where they join. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, J.P. Phillips
Hey, there may be sellers (such as Peter's Spares) that sell replacements. Other than that, it might be difficult, since they don't make them like that any more. Your best bet may be to try and find a donor loco going cheap for spares - let me know how you get on! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Hi Sam, I found a company called Shapeways that 3d prints those old mainline split axles. Also contacted Bachmann and they have spares as well. Just thought I'd let you know take care ! J.P.
Really nice sam! I can't say anything other than that doncaster green lner locos are great. Also, you put up a pole and asked wich mogul is your favourite, and you had classes k1 - 5 so by k1 do you mean the thompson k1 or the ivatt k1, cause only klicked on k1 thinking it's the ivatt one, as I do love all ivatt engines, so please tell me what you innishely thought. Have a nice day sam. -A talking j50
Thanks very much mate - yeah Doncaster green always looks absolutely lovely! I guess either - sadly I could only use 5 options max :( Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Is this common with Bachmann locos nice detailing but poor motors? I don't own any Bachmann models mine are mostly Hornby and Dapol. Have you reviewed Hornbys Brighton Belle train I have splashed out and brought the 1969 version it's very nice.
In my experience yes - and not just poor motors, often pretty cheap and flimsy mechanisms too! Generally speaking Hornby (and most others) do produce better runners! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks a lot Ian - yeah I hate it when that happens, but if it gets worse, I'll have the lovely job of stripping the motor down - deeply looking forward to that ;) Thanks for watching - Sam :)
That is a beautiful model , Sam. The LNER Green looks amazing, especially with he crisp white lining. Great vid ,well done -Dylan P.S. Have you ever done a Mogul running session, if not would you consider doing one?
Does anyone see that engines under carriage is partly the 60's Batmobile? Because the red lining on the running board, the piston covers... cylinders... I think I need do my research a bit better, the footplate and the undercarriage of the tender, kind of looks like the cars paint job.
the older packaging for both hornby and bachmann were good no messing about and no loco or tender joind togeather to a stupid decoder(sorry to dcc fans but i reallly dont see the point in dcc to me its just a way for hornby and bachmann to make money)
haha I'm not sure about that - I do prefer the blister packaging I reckon - and it is much better now that we don't have to join the loco and tender as Daniel said! But it was nice looking packaging! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
If I would rate this loco, the way the valve gear moves and looks when its running and stationary would impact the rating I would give it. btw I agree with the rating
That's okay Nigel - it's just a unit of force - it should mean more when I measure more locos for comparison! Me neither - very bizarre! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Granted this model does look lovely. But the amount of people I have telling that Bachmann has give hornby a run for their money lately is surprisingly large considering the work needed to maintain their locos over time compared to other lesser known manufacturers. Like Oxford Rail for example.
Thanks a lot David - I agree, there's no comparison between Bachmann and Hornby in my opinion; for me, Hornby win on price, quality, detail and reliability! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Good review Sam, hope that stalling was nothing serious. I do like the those K3's, in my opinion Gresleys best design. They were very versitile and could handle heavy expresses and heavy goods trains with equal ease and were more popluar with the traffic department than the bigger and more famous B17's. Perhaps their finest hour came in the late 1920's and early 1930's after gresleys disasterous P1 2-8-2 heavy good locos were deamed a failure and development of the class cancelled. In order to speed up timings of London bound heavy goods trains K3s were employed, the trains shortend, but timed for much higher speeds. A role they performed very very well. It's a shame non have survived, and even more baffling that when several groups are new building 'failed' (or at the very best 'suspect)' gresley designs like the P2 and V4 locos, a new build of a K3, a design that could serve very well on both Heritage lines and as a mainline tour locomotive hasn't even considered!! Anyway have a great week Jon
Hey Jon - it's a motor failure I'm pretty sure, but I can usually fix it with a full strip down, but I hate doing it! Yes they're gorgeous things indeed - really glad to have found this one! Thanks very much for the history on them mate, Cheers, Sam :)
Beautiful model Sam! Shame none were preserved but A1 Trust announced a K3 is one of their future new build projects!
Thanks Ryno! That's awesome - let's hope they get around to it! :D

When these were built, they had one of the biggest boilers of the time.

These are quite cheap to buy but they are heavy and run really well. I have an LNER black one, which is probably more prototypical (only two K3s were ever painted apple green, and not for long at all). My only minor quibble is that the tender can be fiddly to hook up.
I've just bought one second hand & coupling up the tender is indeed a pain in the posterior.

I agree, definitely a great looking loco overall! Ahh that's interesting - I hadn't heard that nickname before!! :O

The nickname "Ragtimers" applied to the K3's predecessor, the Great Northern 'K2', though I didn't know why! :)
Jazzers, normally, supposedly because of the way they shimmied down the track.
Hi Sam I love the moguls
I was thinking about getting my self a class 66 but they seem to be expensive

I do like moguls but I prefer them when they have tighter wheel spacing and are in BR black with plenty of wagons.
That's fair enough mate - yeah this one does have quite a long wheelbase!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I NEED ONE OF THESE
haha yeah, they are good!! :D
There is two different class steam engine there is GNR class H4 steam locomotive and LNER class k3?
Ahh is that so?? I'm not sure mate!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
What was your favorite out of the GWR LMS LNER SR
Mine is the LMS
Great choice on the LMS! I think it's the SR for me! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I do like that loco, very nice. I would love two see it in GNR livery!Great video well done 👍
Thanks a lot George - I'd love this in GNR livery too! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Man the k3 is different but beautiful. I wish some were preserved
Very much so - pity these were lost! :(
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Always find Bachmann locomotives seem to have the edge on detail compared to hornby. Not a bad loco really for £90.
Some of them seem to yeah, and I agree - not too bad for the money!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Nice video Sam. If you do strip the K3 down would be interesting to see a video of that too.
Hey Alan - I did do a strip down when I first got it - I could film it when it's due for a service though! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
What is your favourite train on your layout
Ooh I think still the Hornby Battle of Britain class! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I guess either - sadly I could only use 5 options max :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
this locomotive is massive piece of art
I agree, it certainly is! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
A very good looking engine, shame about the running problem you had, but I know you will be able to sort that out.
Thanks a lot Ian - yeah I hate it when that happens, but if it gets worse, I'll have the lovely job of stripping the motor down - deeply looking forward to that ;)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
another great review!!
Thanks!!
Thanks a lot mate, that's very kind of you!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Great video Sam it look great might get one one day
Thanks a lot David - sounds good mate, hope you can get one! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
That is a beautiful model , Sam. The LNER Green looks amazing, especially with he crisp white lining.
Great vid ,well done
-Dylan
P.S. Have you ever done a Mogul running session, if not would you consider doing one?
Thanks a lot Dylan, much appreciated mate! Yes I'll be doing one very soon! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Does anyone see that engines under carriage is partly the 60's Batmobile? Because the red lining on the running board, the piston covers... cylinders... I think I need do my research a bit better, the footplate and the undercarriage of the tender, kind of looks like the cars paint job.
haha yeah actually - it does look that way, lol!! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The Old Bachmann Packaging Is Better Then The Newer One
the older packaging for both hornby and bachmann were good no messing about and no loco or tender joind togeather to a stupid decoder(sorry to dcc fans but i reallly dont see the point in dcc to me its just a way for hornby and bachmann to make money)
@@danielannett1019 Yeah
haha I'm not sure about that - I do prefer the blister packaging I reckon - and it is much better now that we don't have to join the loco and tender as Daniel said! But it was nice looking packaging! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@danielannett1019 Once you understand DCC and use it, you will never go back.
@@cleo6686 oh i understand it but sorry still no with dcc its like marmite you either love it or hate it and im sorry but i just dont like it
Is there a 3 pole motor in the locomotive?
Yes, I believe this one uses a 3 pole!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I see we’re getting fancy with the k3
haha absolutely!! :D
If I would rate this loco, the way the valve gear moves and looks when its running and stationary would impact the rating I would give it.
btw I agree with the rating
haha what would you give it then?! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Looks good, Sam. I do not know about newtons so it loses me. A good review but, I cannot understand pricing strategy.
cc
That's okay Nigel - it's just a unit of force - it should mean more when I measure more locos for comparison! Me neither - very bizarre!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
What's your favorite train you own?
Still the Battle of Britain class I think! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I like it, with the tender she looks nice and chunky!
I agree! I'm a big fan of this one for sure! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
A lovely engine sam love the colour too
Thanks a lot Lorraine - so do I! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I like it, but I have concerns about the motor and would buy it if it was a bit cheaper. Martin (Thailand)
Yeah me too Martin - I've had this happen with quite a few Bachmann models!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great review
Thanks mate! :D
What a wonderful steam locomotive model! 😍😍It r
eminds me of my Lego Emerald Night.(Although they are not the same type of locomotive)😂👍
Thanks very much mate! Ooh the Lego Emerald Night - that sounds awesome!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
So Sam, have you decided about the urban rambler?
I love these videos, I could watch these 24-7, Eshan :D
I will be keeping an eye out for one for a good price mate! :D
Anyway have a great week
Jon
Hey Jon - it's a motor failure I'm pretty sure, but I can usually fix it with a full strip down, but I hate doing it!
Yes they're gorgeous things indeed - really glad to have found this one! Thanks very much for the history on them mate,
Cheers,
Sam :)
i wonder where is k2
