I obviously want to thank them for seeing me and waiting but I also hope to give them a nice perception on motorcyclist. Maybe they did have a squid on the highway cut them off while weaving at 120mph through traffic, but I hope that they will also remember the nice motorcyclist who gave them a wave for stopping and waiting and they'll be more open minded to those who ride

    Mostly it can be said that any subculture within society gets up the nose of another. I’m a cyclist in the UK, believe me, at least as a motorcycle rider I get the odd person who realizes I am not only going to work like everyone else but also taking up less space and therefore making other peoples life easier. As soon as I jump on my bicycle I am all of a sudden dehumanized and unanimously disrespected by other road users just for being there.

    • @doghous3

      subcultures! Yup. Even in push-bike circles. I used to x-country/downhill a lot and would get sneered at by roadies (cyclists) when I was on the road with my hardtail mtb. As for motorbikes, I think most normies think of them as widow-makers. Heh.

    It depends. People will think what they want to think. If you drive a big truck, people can and do perceive you differently depending on where you are. In Texas and Oklahoma it’s pretty much expected. In big and dense coastal cities, you can be get perceived as a redneck country bumpkin. With bikes, I think it depends more on how you carry yourself. In today’s culture, the squid without gear riding 2-3 times the speed limit and getting angry at the car pulling out in front at no risk to them is remembered more than the guy riding invisible.

    • @ShivaShakur
      @ShivaShakur ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's like every day I hear someone make a rude comment about how some dude driving a truck must have a small pee pee. Then in the next breath they'll say they support body positivity and think shaming people based on how they're born is wrong. People are terrible at examining their own biases and recognizing their hypocrisy. Most are "sheep" unfortunately, ignorant, surface-level intelligent, and/or extremely cognitively imbalanced or dissonant (figuratively myopic, intellectually strong in logic but only barely able to create or recognize social cues, or vice versa)

    I have always liked this opinion I once heard regarding driving that said "isn't it funny how everyone driving slower than you is an asshole and everyone driving faster than you is a maniac?"
    I think this translates in many different aspects of not only driving/riding but almost everything. If I see someone speeding (not even crazy fast) or aggressively moving through traffic, I tend to think WTF are they doing? But then that might be me and any other given day. I think this "bad behavior" is normal for enthusiasts whether it is cars, trucks or bikes, but in North America since bikes are not a common form of commuter transportation it means most motorcyclists are also enthusiasts which means there is a higher percentage of them "doing bad things" by why we are all judged.

I’ve met some harley guys that get enthusiastic about the younger generation becoming riders. Their main concern is how some people go over 100 and might not make it because of the possibility of one simple mistake could end it all. I know my honda navi is technically a scooter but I get a lot of compliments on it and it helped me with the basics such as counter steering and throttle control.

What is funny is the response from some people when they see that “normal” people do ride, and in the case of a group I ride with, we’re all health care professionals. It not that it became "optional", it's that most squids on supersport bikes ran and either go away or got un-alived. I once got busted doing 80 in a 55 on my R1. Sheriff deputy saw me and flashed his lights. I pulled over, took off my helmet and waited a solid 2 minutes for him to come. The look of relief on his face was priceless. He thanked me for stopping and I said "You got me fair and square." His biggest concern wasn't me violating the speed limit, it was my safety due to risk of crashing being higher and that's why he thanked me.

    Hi Yam, those that have never ridden also have built in preconceptions. They don't relate to the psyche of a rider.

    I live in an area where you really only see groups of Harleys with the normal racket they make but no drama. Only see one or maybe two sport bikes together. No real stereotypes. I do think it has to do with population and ability to ride all year. I ride a MT09 and don't think I've seen another one around yet.

Complete nerd who loved tinkering with mechanical things since I was 3 years old. Also own a bunch of fun German cars. And no tattoos. Happy in my enthusiast worlds.

    I was a bit bugged by some specific dirt bike riders a few years ago. A couple of kids of a family that owned the gas station down the road from me, the family owned a whole strip of land, the kids decided they wanted to do dirt bikes, so the family rented a Bobcat and made a track for the kids. I mean that's friggin' awesome right? Except the kids were on the track ALL THE TIME, like 12 hours a day, every day, all summer, like 500 feet from my house. It was even more irritating than the HD crowd riding along the scenic road that our house is up against (sometimes almost 100 bikes in a pack taking minutes to go by)

    Here in Spain we have the European AM -> A1 -> A2 -> A licenses progression. So real quick for those who don't know it. For a reference, you can drive cars when you're 18 (with the B license). You can get the AM license with 15 and drive 2 strokes 49cc. So you can see young little future squids outside highscools on that. With 16 years old you can get the A1 license, and it gets you up to 125cc. Here you can encounter from (again) future squids on a GSXR 125 from a lot (and I mean a LOT) of adults going to work and trying to save some money on parking and gas. With 18 years old you can now go to the A2. No cc limitation, but power instead. Maximum power output of 35 Kw (which is around 49 HP). Now right here is where you start to find some enthusiast. Yeah some people are still commuting saving some bucks on a limited 650cc but I would say maybe half of them end up falling in love with motorcycles. Now for the last one the A license is just "whatever bike". But in order to get it you need to posses at least the A2 license for 2 years. So this system is supposed to "reward" progression and dynamic learning. It kinda works and also it doesn't but that's another whole different story. My point is: 1000cc here? Full A license. That means you're an absolut motorcycle freak enthusiast (normies see them as "nothing bad against those people") or just a street Rossi. However there's PLENTY of enthusiasts who just do their weekend rides and enjoy, but the minority of street squids poppin nooners and revvin that inline 4 straight piped Gixxer are a real "inconvinience" for the rest of us. However it is true that it kinda is like tattoos. But slower. People are getting used to see the rider as an interrogation like "it can be whoever I don't know". But I do believe it's gonna get some years still to get to that point. But we are doin pretty good I would say. Drive safe guys.

I ride a foot-forward cruiser (not a Harley), I'm not a member of any MCC, I don't wear a cut, I wear an open face helmet and textile armour, I ride purely for pleasure (I'm professionally retired so have loads of time on my hands), and apart from funeral/wedding/prom escorts, I ride solo. Usually.
