The USA's Matthew Grevers sets a new Olympic record of 52.16 as he wins the men's 100m backstroke event at the London 2012 Olympic Games (30 July).
Grevers compatriot Nick Thoman won silver in the event with Japan's Ryosuke Irie winning the bronze.
Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.
In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.
Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

Ryosuke Irie perhaps the shortest swimmer during this final, an underdog, yet managed to catch up and ended with bronze. During the panpac 2014 in Australia, he out touched Grevers, winning gold in the 100 m back final. What an extraordinary swimmer!

+Kewi Rua yea, he is probably the best in technique , thats why he is able to compete against swimmers 15-20 cm taller than him. he is only 178 cm tall, he is tall for normal people but for swimmers nowadays, he is small xD

All Backstsroke Races are in Usa's Hands for 2013 , that's for sure . Grevers , Lochte , Clary , FRanklin , Bootsma , Murphy , Thoman are all on the top of backtroke mastery for this Year's World Championships in Barcelona . Go Usa

In my opinion, most of freestylers espacially sprinters are taller than swimmers in other strokes. world class sprinters are rarely shorter than 1.9m

I mean most of asian people are smaller. average asian men are 1.7m of height and 70kg while black and caucasian men are 1.8m and 80kg. obviously, sun yang are so tall (1.98m) however, the rate of tall men like him in asia is low. You can see almost all of japanese swimmers under 1.85m
