The USA's Matthew Grevers sets a new Olympic record of 52.16 as he wins the men's 100m backstroke event at the London 2012 Olympic Games (30 July).
Grevers compatriot Nick Thoman won silver in the event with Japan's Ryosuke Irie winning the bronze.
Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.
In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.
Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

4:59 Words of wisdom, such eloquent beauty to finish a race with words so well chosen and beautiful.
4:59
I’m surprised how so many olympians can hold their tongue I’d be swearing my face off if I was a champion
Irie's finishing speed is just UNREAL.
Matt Grevers still holds the pool record in the 100 back at my school. This dude is a tank
This is so awesome to watch again.
does anyone else hear Thoman swear his head off at 4:59? hahaha
The unedited version of the race with the swearing. Haha. Very cool and exciting swim!
A Monster in size and Muscle power ! His underwaters are pretty amazing too .
When Mathew talks to his team friend in the other lane did he swear?
Yes he did
WelshKing 15 they look like twins 5:02
no, Nick Thoman did
Daniel Bennett dunno
Ryosuke Irie perhaps the shortest swimmer during this final, an underdog, yet managed to catch up and ended with bronze. During the panpac 2014 in Australia, he out touched Grevers, winning gold in the 100 m back final. What an extraordinary swimmer!
+Kewi Rua yea, he is probably the best in technique , thats why he is able to compete against swimmers 15-20 cm taller than him. he is only 178 cm tall, he is tall for normal people but for swimmers nowadays, he is small xD
Also, I am pretty sure he was in 8th at the turn!! The real amazing race was with the bronze medalist for sure :)
What a comeback by Irie after a poor start!
That turn was crazy
Definitely heard it... can you blame them?
the Japanese are probably the best swimmers on earth, considering they're all 8" shorter than their competition
3:05 they're about to go on blocks for race to start, saving u time if u don't want to see the announcing just swimming , LIKE so everyone sees and if u used it
All Backstsroke Races are in Usa's Hands for 2013 , that's for sure . Grevers , Lochte , Clary , FRanklin , Bootsma , Murphy , Thoman are all on the top of backtroke mastery for this Year's World Championships in Barcelona . Go Usa
In my opinion, most of freestylers espacially sprinters are taller than swimmers in other strokes. world class sprinters are rarely shorter than 1.9m
3:52 salida
3:50 4:14
I have held his medal so cool
Love the finish lineup tho, USA, USA, JAPAN. :oP
Ummm at my school the record still stands at 51.8 in short course yards. The high school where state was held that year (New Trier), i think its even faster
AT 6 Foot 8 , he is one of the 3 tallest Pro Swimmers in the world .
3:12 the best the fastest the strongest the most unbeatable swimmer an invincible swimmer that cannot be defeated in swimming ever
que buena competencia
4:59 Thoman cusses and is pumped
yep I agree.
It´s not 100 m Backstroke, it´s 30 m Streamline and 70 meter Backstroke! :D
A real gentleman, Matt Grevers.
the NC two As tho
+Aditya Lakshmanan I was on the floor when they said that!!! LOLOLOL
4:56 grievers lmaooooo
yeah
Matt Grevers used to swim at the club I swim at now.
at 6'8 he should be winning golds
I know someone who goes a 49...In SCY.
Thanks jack cause of u i got my time :D
i hope he still holds the record...
The school record is a 48 and some change (short course).
I think that's Anne chandler cheering for him
Rian No doubt Annie’s cheering... at the end, when Matt blows a kiss, I like to think it’s for her.
not too surprising he still holds it tbh :3
Proud to be American:)
he is using the tyr socket rocket 2.0 mirrored, same as Grevers and Thoman
it can be done, mark fosters 100m record at 15 years old has just been broken in the last year, it was set in 1986 i think
THAT DUDE STOLE MY NAME
i just realize it too. i mean he is only 5ft10. which is ab 1.78 meter. so it means he is really really fast
I think all these swimmers hold the records at their school or club.. Very few Olympians in the world that come from all over the country.
did thoman swear when when he went over to celebrate with grevers?
George Firth Yes!
i think perfect
Wow greavers
I saw him at duel in the pool
not everyone is super tall. lochte is only 6'1" and others are shorter
i’m here from casey neistat
How is this possible...
Lots and lots of hard work, he did set the textile best of 52.08 at the trials. Harcourt is the best ever at the 50, grevers at 100, and Pierson only is the best at the 200

The prophecy states that liam tancock will never win an olympic medal
hate it when comments get removed, what did he say?!
Irie was very fast
what do you mean still holds the record, he isnt that old and he's an olympian
WOW
wich googles is Camille using ?
I was just thinking how surprised I was when my time for the backstroke was 51 secs...then I realized that it was for the 50m and not the 100m -__-
The Italian Stallion weird flex
I mean most of asian people are smaller. average asian men are 1.7m of height and 70kg while black and caucasian men are 1.8m and 80kg. obviously, sun yang are so tall (1.98m) however, the rate of tall men like him in asia is low. You can see almost all of japanese swimmers under 1.85m
Yea so there
What time??
3:50
The times in short course yard pools are much faster than long course 50 meter pools because the swim is simply longer.
Im 0.62 seconds off my regional qualifying time could anyone tell me what the best technique is plz i have 1 week left
what time???
oi
I came here thinking of Makoto
time?
I did
I am watching this to get pumped. I am hoping to break 32 in my 50 back. Yes I know I am slow for a twelve year old.
Droopy Agario you’re really not!!
OH wait, silly me you probably meant SCY :)! Well keep trying and practicing hard!!
@@thebossness1440 as a little update, time wise, i am 13 now and i go a 27.8 scy and a 30.8 scm(relay splits.) I also just broke 1:00 in scy 100 back. I could be going a lot fatser i just have a terrible second lap.
lol i noticed that too
How do they know when theyre at the turn or when to actually turn?
Stroke count after the flags
if you train enough iu just know, I know my stroke count but I know where I am without it
+Huzza yep, there are flag in the ceiling and lines drawn in the pool's floor. But those kind of swimmers now exactly how much it takes for them to swim the entire pool and they now that when they reach certain amount of strokes they are ready to do the turn.
Stroke count after flags

U got 2:10 for 100 m :o u sure it wasnt 200m
Hola k ase?

Plz respond need help x
the N C two A
哈哈!
Look at all their mucles better work out hardet
AHAHAH N, C, two A's
its too late to change your technique haha
Lol funn but true
Asian people are smaller and shorter than Caucasian and Black people. that's disadvantage which makes them hardly get medals in swimming and athletics
At my last meet someone swam this in 48 or 47 seconds
that was probably in a yards pool
