    • @paultrussy
      @paultrussy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      It's the same for many people living in the UK. I'm English, I'm nearly 62 and live some 180 miles north of London. I reckon I've been there a maybe 10 times in my life many of those to see the famous sights. The best visits were staying with my brother when he lived in Kensington in the 80s as that was the time I got to see places 'off the beaten track'. It's not all pretty of course but there are substantial areas that have an almost rural and 'old-world' feel; the parks are fabulous and indeed much of the central districts are surprisingly green. 🇬🇧

    • @Mr.Septon

      That is exactly how I felt. That was the closest thing to an authentic London tour that I have ever experienced. Seeing the postcard version of London is neat in and of its own right, but going down the small winding paths, seeing the little things, it makes a huge difference in experience. That was the most that I have ever wanted to go to London, which is somewhere I have in general always wanted to go and experience.

First lockdown central was very deserted like in this video but hasn't been that way for a very long time. I'm moving soon and I'm looking forward to be able to walk to work from my new place because I'm tired I getting busy tubes twice a day (definitely no where near as busy as pre COVID tubes but still busy). I'm probably missing something since I've never been there, but from the video it looks like you'd have to dead-lift the bike over the fence at the top if you rolled it up that ramp, and that is before mentioning the difficulty of working around the posts on the way up without dropping it. I have trouble considering that to be "designed" with that use in mind. Plus that doesn't look like a typical bicycle, and is possibly substantially heavier than the size implies. Holding it several centimetres off the ground for a longer time with the ability to rest periodically is likely far more feasible than a single high lift.

    This truly is a historic snapshot. I've never seen so few people out and about in London. Heavy "I am Legend"-vibes. It's really really unsettling to see, but at the same time, really amazing. Clear views of all the important sights. A tourist's dream. Nothing but buildings and statues and monuments on the photo's.

I had no idea you used to teach at the National Maritime Museum and given the timeline of how old I am atm (18) and the fact that I've went to the Museum a LOT when I was a kid and even as a teen it is very possible you might have taught me 😂 or at least walked past each other. Hope you enjoyed Greenwich, you'll always have a fan from there

    • @jgill551

      I just have to say, as someone who lives in London, it's actually really strange. I still vividly remember one day it being busy as normal to the next day it being deserted. Even after a year of it I still find myself going 'where the hell are all the people?' when I cycle to work or catch the Tube into central (when it isn't lockdown!).
      On the one hand, I am used to it and love how quiet everything is and not feeling like I am going to die when I cycle to work. Before, I always felt like I was never really able to enjoy London with the millions of tourists around stressing me out.
      But at the same time, it was kind what made London, London. The buzz and the activity, being able to hear the different languages spoken on the tube and tbh, I really did get into the whole 'getting angry at the tourist at front who didn't know how to use the ticket barriers' and now I feel like I miss that too!
      I do look forward to when it gets busier, I just hope some aspects of the current feel of London remain.
      Well... that was long! Sorry haha.
