Without Matt I'm having a hard time getting anything out of these podcasts. Wills & Felix's upper middle class upbringing really shines through here. Honestly more so Will whose analysis i really used to enjoy. Someone straddled with college debt, without the social network of someone raised by parents working for the NYT and New Yorker, and paying obscene rent isn't going to find solace in the fact that they're useful to someone. Many of the angry young men are employed, i was one of them during my twenties. We need Matt back

    • @sandrasim46

well college really failed you because you don't have the listening comprehension skills to notice they said jobs should pay you enough money to sustain yourself (i.e. that means enough for rent and debts). also unlike felix and will, matt has a wife and child and would probably offer an even more scathing reprimand of "angry young men" like yourself. :)

@sandrasim46 haha I'm a married man with a child too. I have empathy for the average working class young men and women who feel lost and angry. I heard the qualifiers they included afterwards but I think Will's experience as someone who grew up in Manhattan with wealthy connected parents is why his only advice is to get a job. It may have solved his problems working as a publisher but for many this isn't going to solve their anger.

Hello, I live in the Netherlands where we have en extreme right-wing, islamophobe, pro-zionist government.
What I want to point at: In the slipstream of the oppression of anti-genocide protests a union organized 'normie protest' of students and university staff planned for 14 november was forbidden. This protest had a huge degree of popular support and a huge mobilisation potential around a bunch of bread and butter questions. It could have been the first mass protest against domestic economic policies and the first for the unpopularity of the current government in Dutch society.
Why it was forbidden? The authorities claimed to have evidence that violent Palastine protester would 'hijack' the protest...
I think this adds another highly neferious layer to this particular case of Bad Hasbara that is absolutely worth mentioning and important to be aware of.
Apart from that the Dutch Government feasts on lies and distortions about the protest to smear the Turkish and Moroccan minorities. They suppressed anti-genocide protest in Amsterdam, and there is footage of police beating up protesters. I am sure many readers are aware / will not be surprised about this.

I was hoping that the Chapo crew would have some insights this morning but they seem stuck on the idea of jobs being some kind of source of meaning when labor under capitalism is intrinsically alienating. Steel workers were famous for hating their jobs, as a nurse who’s taken care of people maimed at work it’s weird to me to hear podcasters talking about how meaningful specific kinds of jobs are vs serving coffee or whatever. What people need is economic stability and a sense of freedom to be able to make the kind of life for themselves that isn’t predetermined by how much money your parents made. Regardless democrats are not going to come up with any solutions to this problem, and neither are republicans. Our only saviors will be ourselves as working class people, organized against bosses cops and landlords everywhere in the world. ✌️

Labor is alienating and most people hate their jobs, but it's much better to have something to do during the day, that pays you and grants some measure of purpose and lets you collab with your peers than it is to be jobless with no prospects.

@@LulaTheStampedenot necessarily, people need both economic security and liberation from alienation. I know that you as a medical worker get to see the immediate effect of hard work and appreciation ( at times ),
but there is also tons of tedious labor that sometimes amounts to busywork due to the economic structure that doesn't allow you the space to perform even more effective treatments
This is everyday for all the other dayjob workers you seem to think are happy just serving coffee. Maybe some are, but nobody is happy coming home to an eviction notice.

  • @T4Tea4two
    @T4Tea4two 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

To be somewhat sincere, I think Chapo's "get a job" stance illustrates what's so illusory and unhelpful about "gender-based" cultural and political prescriptions. Like, "men" as a category is so broad that any prescriptive assessment of what their particular experiences are, or what they need to better themselves (which mostly means "agree with me, politically") ends up being a self-serving assessment of a tiny niche within that group.
So, when people say "men just need to get a job" they're really talking about NEETs and people without the sort of social and economic grounding (to the extent jobs offer that anymore) to have a stake in society and social interaction. I've known enough people like that (mostly women, though) to know that "get a job" would be good advice for them to take. They're understandably disillusioned by capitalism and the labor market, but they're not any better for being NEETs living in resentful destitution. When liberals online wring their hands about men needing positive male role models, they don't mean NEETS, they mean young gen z guys who they think would be amenable to watching Hasan or any one of the dozens of male progressive youtubers. Sometimes, they don't mean either, and are instead imagining the archetypal white, conservative, lunchpail construction-worker as their audience.
There's some overlap between these groups, but, a lot of differences, too (a lot of men do have jobs and don't consume whatever evil online content liberals are always blaming for right-wing radicalization). People say "men", when they're really speaking about subsets of men they imagine having these experiences and shortcomings. Choosing to frame this around "men" writ large (because you want to air out grievances you have about men) means that any broad assessment of their lives, beliefs, and shortcomings will be hollow and alienating to a large segment of them. They'll find it out-of-touch, and then liberals will point to that reaction as evidence for the lost natures of men in this country and dust their hands. Rinse and repeat. The framing of reactionary sentiment in this country as a "men's" issue is ultimately self-serving - it's not about challenging any specific pattern of sexism of bigotry on the part of a subset of men.
    Tldr - I'm gay

Interesting potential ideas here. But I’m distracted to think it through. I think you’re driving towards this dichotomy between working for money, such as a job or gigs, and having passive income. The bourgeois collect rent, own businesses and collect dividends while not working a job. There are so many people like this that it’s got to be confusing for kids who see them as role models. The “get a job” stuff here was pretty nauseating. Felix and Amber made some good points, but also laughable to say that having a job keeps you off the internet. Will’s general idea that getting a job is somehow going to immediately give you some self worth is one of the more out of touch things he has said. The reality is that working a modern job is extremely alienating, as Felix and Amber argued well. I think everyone wants to imagine that every angry young man is living in his parents basement and not working, but it’s not just the case.

@@morganguyer3053 Listen work sucks, its not only alienating but mentally draining. When it gets busy at my work some times I work 60 hrs a week and on the weekends. Lucky for me I don't have kids or a family that needs me; I can only imagine how hard it would be if that were the case. However if I don't work I will be in a even worse situation. As a socialist I cannot be a proletariat or understand them if I don't live as one. Is Amber out of touch? Absolutely but to say hey work sucks stop working is not a solution for anyone. Its a reality that has to be dealt with. There has been a drop in men's labour participation rate specifically in the 25-54 age bracket, people in their prime working year. That is a problem for the left since Marxism has struggled with the Lumpen proletariat class since Marx.

To people hating on the jobs argument: it was presented poorly, but it's true. If you give people minimally decent jobs (which are, admittedly, in low supply) they do become less prone to right-wing radicalization. Even then, this burden should not be placed upon the workers, but on the government which failed to create such jobs.

: The one detail that was missing from their argument, and I'll make it here, is that you can't and shouldn't navigate the pitfalls of the labor force alone. I was an insufferable NEET POS for the whole of my 20s, and I guarantee you that if I had the level of class consciousness and the level of understanding as to what my place was within the labor force in any position I took on for a wage, I would have been a lot more well-adjusted then than I am now. I feel like I'm permanently fucked up because I wasn't capable of navigating these things in any other way than on my own. I learned my lessons too goddamned late.

A train derailment 20 miles away (East Palestine) was headline national news for weeks. A MULTI-STORY BUILDING FUCKING EXPLODED downtown earlier this year - one that was part of the skyline such as that is - and people around Youngstown itself weren't even talking about it by the end of the next week.

The person correctly identified that metronoming political parties was a result of both parties being bad and things just getting worse… though they blamed it on a lack on centrism instead of capitalism. Sigh…

same here. Most men are confused and don't know what the fuck to do and all that liberals do is blame them for everything so of course they're going to gravitate to people like trump and andrew tate that tell them "fuck that shit trust your own strength and fuck anyone else" because there's no alternative social model that they can get involved in right now. 4th wave feminism was an absolute tragic failure, that was so bad it even drove women, queer people, and people of color away. They never wanted equity or equality, they just wanted to use men in their early 20's as a scapegoat, so they didn't have to worry about class consciousness. That shit backfired so hard.

But I think these guys now know that something has dramatically changed in the past ten years with how the public accesses and processes information in a direction that has led to incoherence and conspiracy. The chapo guys have actually talked and laughed about it a lot - how technology has brought back pre-modern and insane beliefs - but they just refuse to admit that it’s started to have a massive impact on our politics.
And they refuse to do so bc of some fear of being labeled “contemptuous” of average voters (even though this explanation doesn’t blame people - it blames technology) and because the traditional tools of the left give us absolutely zero means of solving this problem.
They only want to diagnose problems with known cures. This one doesn’t have a cure.

The best way to be happy is to just get an income and enjoy life instead of waiting for the total societal overhaul that'll validate the unemployed bohemian lifestyle. I've been a successful socialist freelance artist for my entire 20s and though it was great fun, it would never allow me to spoil the person I want to marry one day as much as they deserve, and certainly can't support any plans to have a family. There's plenty of nice, generous, smart, funny, creative dudes out there who are also dependably employed, and it's such a long and honestly unfair journey, once you realise that's what you want, you'll rue every day wasted faffing about picking flowers by the side of the road instead of walking it.
I recognise there is an employment crisis in many parts of the world, but better to die fighting against the floodwaters than spend your last breath complaining about how you shouldn't have to drown if someone else did things differently.

We have been alienated into a drone species, and this should allow cashiers and stockers a life of mundane personal relations that are complex and discreet. A small, simple life of personal fulfillment where you're hardly aware of how important you are by maintaining the community you live in. If you stop screaming for two minutes and listen “a job that has some meaning behind it is good for you cuz it gives your life meaning as well” you can continue to punch the drywall and hole at the moon now

I used to subscribe to but quit after the smugness was getting to me. Amber adds realness as she and Matt are the only ones who seem to know about on the ground activism. More episodes like this and I'll resubscribe

D-does this woman believe in spontaneous generation? Like if you leave an aquarium untended for too long it spontaneously produces sharks?

Amber is from Innsmouth and that is how she and her people procreate.

@@rwrunning1813 Fuck you! Now I have to be that sweaty internet nerd who replies with "um, akshually..!" You're thinking of abiogenesis, the process of life emerging from dead matter through evolution. Spontaneous generation is the idea that was discarded in the early modern period that says that rotting meat will spontaneously give rise to maggots without flies having to lay eggs in it, for example. Some dude wrote down a recipe for mice: leave dirty rags covered in earth in a jar and mice will emerge. it was wild. I know because I got them mixed up until I checked before writing that comment!
