HOW TO CLEAN YOUR CHAIN HONDA REBEL 500

  • This is how I clean my chain on my Rebel. Certainly not the only way to do it but it’s how I do it. First you clean with the cleaner, then go back after drying and apply the wax spray. Its purpose is not for lubrication but to keep water and other debris from getting into the or ring part of the chain.

How often should that be done?

I believe the manual say every 600 miles to clean and check adjustment.

Nice video, I would just add a piece of cardboard box on the back of the chain, to avoid spraying cleaner and lube in the tire and other parts of the bike.

I've crashed from getting lube on my tires and leaving the parking lot too aggressively (for a now slicked tire). Would recommend as well.

For real. That cardboard sounds like a great idea.

Your videos are amazingly helpful. I’m a complete novice when it comes to anything motorcycles. I literally on a whim one day went into a Honda dealer, bought a new 23 Honda Rebel 500 SE ABS 3 weeks ago. A week after that I strolled Into my local BMV and took the written test to obtain my motorcycle permit, and coming up next wknd I go take my riding course so I can figure out what to do with this machine. I’m terrified to play with it even though I have my permit. So she sits next to my cars all covered up looking sad, lol. I’ve been watching a ton of videos on things I have to do to keep my bike maintained. I was considering rethinking my life choices after realizing how little I know how to fix things, etc. 😂 I am not a gear head AT ALL. I don’t do the maintenance on my other cars… I pay people to do all that. And I have realized it likely won’t be much different with my bike. I work a ton, and lack a full garage of man tools and crap like that but I figured I could at least do simple things like oil my chain. Your video was easy to follow. However I will need to purchase and figure out how to get my bike on that bike stand to be able to do this I’m sure. I have a handful of modifications my bike needs just to make it ergonomically fit me. But I will likely take the bike to a shop to do all that. You mentioned in more then one of your videos that these bikes come with tools??? My dealership did not give me tools. Did I get shafted b4 I call them and ask??

Man I do mine so much differently. I clean the chain with kerosene because kerosene is cheap effective and is good for the O-Rings. I have my kerosene in a spray bottle .Have the same three sided brush you do and some shop rags to really clean up the kerosene and let the chain dry for a few hours Next I use about a 1/2 inch paint brush and paint on 80-90 Maxima Gear Oil on both sides of the chain... Nothing I have used penetrates around the O- rings and keeps them as wet and also the Maxima Gear Oil has additives like rust inhibitors in it. My chain has never been so quite too. So that is what I do. Kit

That sounds awesome. I never had a chance to try kerosene but I heard it works wonders too!

    I add lube before wax.

This is unnecessary. The chain is o-ring sealed with grease from the factory. You're really just trying to prevent rust here.

Any tips on doing this with the stock exhaust still on?

Shouldn’t be much of an issue. The exhaust is on the other side.
