i auditioned for american idol when they came to boston a few years back. it was a really last minute thing and i wasn't expecting much because i didn't really get a lot of time to prepare when i decided to go but just wanted to do it for the experience. waited in line for hours. right before we auditioned, a group of us saw an excited girl running to what looked to be her father and hugging him, crying because of how happy she was because she was moving on. we all thought it was a really sweet moment. then we saw someone working redirect her back and had them shoot that moment, like, three more times. then they break you off into sections and wait in another line to be auditioned, but you can hear the people who are going before you. there were SO many talented people, and the only people i heard them let in were three very obviously bad singers. two of them seemed to be just messing around and one seemed more serious. i wasn't even upset about not moving on because i didn't really expect to, but it always bothered me that they chose people who wouldn't get far at all in the show just for entertainment factor rather than people with actual talent who care about music and want to pursue it. i feel like the whole "bad american idol auditions" trope has been taken way too far when you're taking three bad people out of a pool of the fifty that were standing there. that's just my opinion though
You're right, it is upsetting to see how they accept people just for the entertainment, but also, the serious people may actually dodge a bullet, apparently talent shows aren't really beneficial to the singer...
@@daredrogers3884 Because it's taking a genuinely sweet moment and turning it stake, forcing them to redo it so instead of them both being happy, they probably were annoyed by the end.
Judges: "What's your story?" Well, uh, when I was in fourth grade, I got accused of stealing some kid's lunch money. They held a class trial and everything. No one believed me when I said I didn't do it, I couldn't stop crying. The only one who came to my defense, surprisingly, was the kid whose money was stolen. He pointed out that they couldn't find me guilty without hard evidence. He learned that from watching his dad, who was a really famous defense attorney. But then just a few years ago I saw my old friend's name in the news, and he'd become a really ruthless prosecutor! I tried to get back in touch with him, but he would never answer my letters or my calls or my emails, so I thought maybe if I became the next American Idol then he'd have to acknowledge me.
"Lionel's out here auditioning for a TED talk..." LMAO. The man has not really had to share the stage since the 70's. Best way to not be a part of a trio is to get up and make the camera follow him.
14:19 This girl has legitimately amazing voice, pitch, tone and personality. Cannot believe they passed on her, that gotta be the most insane dumb shit.
My problem with tragic backstories for those singers is this: everyone has had hard things in life happen that they had to go through. But someone like me, someone who doesn’t want to talk about it, wouldn’t have as much as a chance just because they don’t feel like giving the world a sob story. People that are silent about their past might not have it easier, they just don’t like telling the world about it.
Billy Bubone Yea it’s ridiculous, it also really incentivizes people to embellish their stories, like the woman who claimed she was in a toxic relationship for 8.5 years, maybe it was that bad, it’s just not even that uncommon, I don’t think it’s worth telling people about on national tv.
Also most of their backstories are either very overdramatized or completely made up. Don’t worry, it’s completely normal not feeling comfortable with telling everyone especially if whatever it was gave you trust issues
I definitely agree with you, I'm not one to let my past impact who I am today. I don't want to be known as the guy who had this bad thing happen to him, I just want to be known as who I am. However, with something like American Idol where you know damn well what the game is (emotional sob story with a good voice basically gets you in), you have to play that game to make it. You have to be prepared to do something you may not want to do if you truly want the best chance at making it on that show. You have to play the game.
One of the reasons I love the British reality TV show "The Great British Bakeoff" is that they show very little backstory. Up until recently the only backstory they would show would be in the final episode with just the 3 remaining finalists and very rarely would the backstories be sensationalized in a harrowing or inspirational way. It's just about baking, and why sensationalize baking? It's just cake.
@@wiiuandmii7619 I actually like the Voice more as in auditions they can't see who it is and that means they're basing it on mostly voice alone. I can't count how many times Kelly has said "oh if I'd have known you were a child a would've turned" even when they're shit.

Okay, now my original song... AMERICAN IDOOOOOOL!”
Judge: “What’s that spark that brought such a passion?” Contestant: ”Well honestly I think I was just born with enough talent to make something like this a hobby. I grew up in a fair town with kind neighbors and two wonderful parents, still to this day I live with no regrets from any hardships.” Judge: “d i s g u s t i n g”
They're copying the Britain's Got Talent format. There's actually a British comedian that faked a sob story and made his way on to BGT and through the auditions just because of his sad, sad, (made up) story.
BGT’s less focused on the sob story. A large majority have sob stories, but a few just have vaguely sad faces and make it through the first auditions (Reuben Gray, Calum Scott).
Part of what made the older seasons inspiring was that going up in front of the judges was a risk. They might tear you to shreds, and the producers used to hype people up so their reactions were more genuine when they did get torn apart. There are no stakes now, it's just another typical "reality" show that feels formulaic and scripted.
Remember in season 8 when “family-friendly” sponsor AT&T didn’t want openly gay Adam Lambert to win so they devised a way for a ton of Kris Allen fans to send thousands of text votes at once?
Not sure if it's true, but even if it is, it turned out much better for Adam than Kris. Adam's been touring with Queen for years & who knows what Kris Allen is doing
I remember replaying and loving the Shrek 2 DVD interactive game that was based off of American Idol, guest starring Simon Cowell. You would select which performance to hear from all of the characters and Simon would critique each one. You could select the winner at the end and if you were to select say the three blind mice, Simon would announce; "And the winner is....ME! For showing up to judge this competition" I still have a soft spot for the whole game, seventeen years later
she is good too, what a shame. I feel like the three judges there have a pretty poppy vibe that won't help anyone who isn't involved in pop, pop country, or pop whatever
I think it's fair to say that they're giving disadvantaged people an opportunity when others already had that opportunity, because not everyone has money or vocal training. But at the end of the day, it's about talent, and people who aren't even averagely good shouldn't advance. Also, someone can lose their mom and still have a bunch of opportunities to become famous. Having something bad happen to you does not automatically make you less privileged or less advantaged. So yes, it is quite annoying that they seem to *only* choose people with sad backstories and say no to extremely talented people who don't have a tragic backstory.
It's also worth noting that not everyone without an extremely sad story who auditions is necessarily privileged. Maybe, they had a normal upbringing in a middle-class family. That still doesn't mean they have extremely high chances to make it without the competition, and the show might be important for them too. They might have worked hard behind the scenes. So, not being completely downtrodden doesn't mean that you're at the other extreme either. Being in the middle is also hard when it comes to fickle careers like show business.
I’m not a fan of the new angle I think I they’ve thrown away the idea of people even getting an opportunity and have turned it into pure television entertainment. There’s not much point in sacrificing talent for previous lack of opportunity. Which is probably why no one actually gets a decent music career off the show anymore. That’s accurate right? The new winners aren’t nearly as successful as they used to be, I can’t name anyone after Adam Lambert.
this makes me think about my friend on American ninja warrior. be didn't get on because he didn't have a good "back story" and same happened to his coach
Jack Virdin pretty much all reality TV works like that now. Even back during the original American idol era producers would screen contestants and either pick ones with really sappy back stories to put through or people who were really obviously bad so that they could be made fun of.
Ah, I was looking for a comment referencing ANW. I record the show and skip over all the back stories when I watch; they might as well just be more commercials at this point smh
Dude, I considered applying to the show but stopped due to the excessive saturation of sob stories. I don't have their TV personality they sought for, and I've lived a pretty normal life. Heck, my mom joked that if I got up the mega well, contrary to the overly ecstatic reactions, I'd just say "meh" and take the money. I remember during one of the season in Vegas there was a Tiktoker who wanted to do a flip into the Jumping Spider. He failed miserably and it was clearly done for clout. I just thought to myself that a person who wanted a shot at beating Vegas got their spot taken by that prick. I stopped watching the show about a year ago. The direction they've taken with it just feels corporate and fake. I miss when it was actually about competition and not being a god damn reality show.
Scott??? That song at the end??? That was kick ass brother. Fairly new to the channel so I'm not familiar with all of your talents, but it's clear you have a lot of pockets you can enter. Heres to future success for you my man. Glad to be a part of the ride. Peace and love.
They’re afraid to be “too harsh” or offend someone. And it makes me sad. I miss the old American Idol when criticism was encouraged, and the judges were more concerned about the VOICE not so much about the look of the artist or their story. Everyone has a sad story, everyone goes through dark times.
There's a middle ground here. You can criticise the material/performance in a constructive way but Simon's whole gimmick was being a prick. It's also overdone at this point. Your last line sums it up tho and the message is what they're bringing forward. However, voice/performance should always be preferred over backstory.
I actually auditioned for both Idol and America's Got Talent as a teen and experienced the behind the scenes horrors. It was nothing like you see on the show.
@@OscarMPG1 for one thing, the “auditions” on the show are actually the second round. The open auditions are for random producers on headsets who were on their phones the whole time and didn’t actually listen to anyone who was singing. They kind of just picked people at random.
The main reason I really liked the early days of Idol was because I felt like I was watching a behind the scenes look at real record executives auditioning talent. The credentials of Simon and Randy showed the process of what it looked like to make a "star". The brutal honesty is something we all know happens in the industry and this show seemed to lift the vail and gave us a true peek inside. Which was ultimately validated by the success of chart topping contestants (Carry Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, and so on). Now that the show has been around for so long the contestants (in my opinion) are chosen based on who has a better story, along with hiring judges who bring a large fan base. Idk just thinking out loud.
I think you really hit the nail on the head. It seemed like before they were actually trying to find people who could make it, and now they’re just making whatever they think will pull in views
Yeah, when they replaced Randy, Simon and Paula with established singers and massive superstar artists for judges, things changed. I think it’s clear that the OG panel had the best success with finding talent because they knew what they were doing and brought a different perspective to the table.
This is literally what reality tv has become: fake backstory, fake everything. Like seriously there’s nothing “reality” about it. This is why I do not watch reality TV.
I love Katy Perry because if you screengrab her face in any of the clips she looks like she has so many regrets and doesn't want to be there which is honestly such a mood
My and my friends used to make jokes where we say something crazy like "I stole a 12 year olds purse at the mall today!" And then end it with "CUZ IM BO BICE BITCH!" and all this time up until now I had NO IDEA no nice was a real person 🤣
The formula of these "Reality" TV shows is really gross. Everything is polished and scripted. Classic emotional manipulation for profiteering agendas - some would call that toxic and abusive behavior.... You're right Scott, is very disingenuous and exploitative - it bereaves the spirit of actual talent, hard work and creativity. Thanks for this vid
14:45 I was SOOOOO mad when this girl didn't make it. Her voice was golden and unique. Then they let multiple people in who can't even sing because it looked good on TV.

American idol contestants: “ I got cancer when I was a little sperm, my mom died the day before I was born. When I figured out I was human at age three I fell into a great depression and tried to poison myself with my feces. I became king of the last surviving Aztec group, they tried to sacrifice me so I killed them all. When I was the age of 12 my pet dodo bird Jimmy died from my horrible body odor. When I was 35 a Nazi named Karen broke into my house and killed all my family. And that’s the end of my story.”
What's the big deal about going to Hollywood? I can just fucking drive there in like, a day. It's not some kind of special exclusive admission, it's just a neighborhood in a city.
I remember watching "The Voice" for the first time with my mom. After like the fourth person was introduced in a long-ass video diary sob story, I was like. "Why does everyone have a tragic backstory?" And she legitimately said, "They aren't tragic they're inspiring." As a woman cried on the TV about how her mother died and was the only one that believed in her. I was like ...wut???
Never stop incorporating songs in your vids dude, they’re all so damn good! I know its a ton of work but don’t think it goes unappreciated. You’re not only a talented comedian but a good musician that knows how to incorporate comedy into it which is even harder than regular songs. Keep struggling!

i auditioned for american idol when they came to boston a few years back. it was a really last minute thing and i wasn't expecting much because i didn't really get a lot of time to prepare when i decided to go but just wanted to do it for the experience. waited in line for hours. right before we auditioned, a group of us saw an excited girl running to what looked to be her father and hugging him, crying because of how happy she was because she was moving on. we all thought it was a really sweet moment. then we saw someone working redirect her back and had them shoot that moment, like, three more times. then they break you off into sections and wait in another line to be auditioned, but you can hear the people who are going before you. there were SO many talented people, and the only people i heard them let in were three very obviously bad singers. two of them seemed to be just messing around and one seemed more serious. i wasn't even upset about not moving on because i didn't really expect to, but it always bothered me that they chose people who wouldn't get far at all in the show just for entertainment factor rather than people with actual talent who care about music and want to pursue it. i feel like the whole "bad american idol auditions" trope has been taken way too far when you're taking three bad people out of a pool of the fifty that were standing there. that's just my opinion though
Dude, that girl hugging her father thing is so wrong.
You're right, it is upsetting to see how they accept people just for the entertainment, but also, the serious people may actually dodge a bullet, apparently talent shows aren't really beneficial to the singer...
FallenAngel7538 oh 100%. it would probably be more beneficial if they were actually looking for talent, though haha. but what are ya gonna do 🤷🏼♀️
@@thetruth830 wait why?
@@daredrogers3884 Because it's taking a genuinely sweet moment and turning it stake, forcing them to redo it so instead of them both being happy, they probably were annoyed by the end.
Judges: "What's your story?"
Well, uh, when I was in fourth grade, I got accused of stealing some kid's lunch money.

This girl has legitimately amazing voice, pitch, tone and personality.
Cannot believe they passed on her, that gotta be the most insane dumb shit.
IKR it’s insane… not only is she incredible but she has a very UNIQUE voice & sound …
Exactly, i feel like they use it as a scapegoat, so rhe judges feel bad about saying no, also, its really stupid
I'd give someone else's backstory.
This show feels like a
parody of a show
One of the reasons I love the British reality TV show "The Great British Bakeoff" is that they show very little backstory. Up until recently the only backstory they would show would be in the final episode with just the 3 remaining finalists and very rarely would the backstories be sensationalized in a harrowing or inspirational way. It's just about baking, and why sensationalize baking? It's just cake.

They were trying to spoof Denmark, but kinda got it confused with the Netherlands.
Part of what made the older seasons inspiring was that going up in front of the judges was a risk. They might tear you to shreds, and the producers used to hype people up so their reactions were more genuine when they did get torn apart. There are no stakes now, it's just another typical "reality" show that feels formulaic and scripted.
It's been sterilized. The entire appeal of reality TV was watching people suffer. Without that, there's no appeal.

@@elliinspace I totally agree with that.

Can you elaborate?
Same here. I stopped paying attention when they added Ellen as a Judge
