- Spring has sprung here along the Alabama Gulf Coast! We've had abnormally high temperatures for this time of the year which means water temperatures are where they need to be for these BIG sheepshead to start their annual offshore spawn. This is one of my favorite times of the year because of the steady action you can get my dropping live crabs or shrimp by nearshore rigs and just about hook up every drop! We even Free netted one!

Wow! That was some CRAZY action Guys! NEVER seen anyone free net a sheep like that! I do appreciate you talking about the conservation side of the fishery. The are some TH-camrs that are not that respectful of the resource, and act like everyone should stock their freezers with these spawning fish. We do not want to see this fantastic fishery abused. Me neither! Lol garmeson said he did it last spring so I guess I’m not the only one. I know no one would believe me if I hadn’t got it on camera. And absolutely, I used to be the same way admittedly… but the more I fish the more I want our great fishery to continue and grow so the next generation can enjoy it. So the first step is to release the biggens when you can

Fishing on the JFK Causeway in Corpus with my wife, she caught a 5-6 lb Sheepshead on a poppin’ cork with live shrimp in 3’ water. When she hooked it, it was fighting so hard that she wanted me to reel it in and I told her, “that’s your fish, you catch it,” and she did!

I recently watched the video when you were stopped by marine patrol. I commented on my not having caught a sheepshead that was a keeper size. Well that's changed since then. I was watching a guy started scratching the barnacles off the Pier. I tossed my shrimp in all those barnacles and hooked up with a 15" sheepshead! Scratch that one off the bucket list. Tight lines and screaming reels to ya

Right on man, I used to not care as much back in the day when I commercial fished, but the more I fish the more I appreciate the great fishery we have and I’d like it to stay that way for generations to come.
@@CaptCollier yessir took a few years for me to grow out of the mindset of filling the cooler every time I went out. I’ll keep doing my part and hope it rubs off on others
I enjoyed the video. I never keep fish that I don't eat or feed my family with. If I have room in my freezer, than they are coming home with me. There is nothing wrong with that. The lawmakers make the rules and they are paid off by the commercial netters. I don't regulate the laws, I just follow them. Best wishes and God bless. The video was awesome. 🙏

Another great video. Absolutely love the sheep head videos. Hope you’re doing well in the tournament. Sometimes I wonder why they do not close the season during spawning time for species of fish to ensure the population
Thanks I appreciate it! And idk about close it completely because it is a great opportunity for anglers to get out and catch these fish but I do think they should drop the limit some or create a “slot” size so all the females arnt killed.

The gulf was a lot nicer to you than us this past week. Tried some fishing out of Orange Beach...swells were too much. Headed about 4 miles out to some shipwrecks and caught a couple of triggerfish before someone on the boat started feeling the swells. Nice video.

Good onya for throwing as many back as possible. Not only are the big ones responsible for breeding, they are pretty slow growing at that. A 20" fish is about 20 years old.
That being said, sheephead are excellent tablefare and I love keeping a few.
Absolutely. I used to not care either and just threw everything in the box as long as they were legal, but I’m more in the conservative side now. I want other people to have the opportunity to catch them

In Austin texas today at a Central Market which is like our high end grocery store for fresh seafood I got amazed at the cost of two certain types of fish. Redfish fillets are $24.99 per pound and Red Snapper is $29.99 per pound. All these years of being a machinist and I think I should have a seafood business and be a fishmonger. The last time my brother and I went to the coast I probably could have paid off the new 200 Suzuki hanging off the back of the boat.
Most of the price now is because of the fuel costs.

Not sure but I think commercial licensing is pretty big cost as well.
Fuel prices are ruining the economy. Can't wait til electric pushes them out.

Yeah, that signal coming from that tower is a pain in the ear... We don't have that on the Chesapeake. I guess they don't put them in up here because they couldn't afford to replace them every day...lol
Up here in New Jersey we've developed an incredible sheepshead fishery seemingly out of nowhere. We don't get the #s but the fish we get are huge, we average like 8 to 10lbs, somebody had a 19.4lber a few years ago nearing the world record

That is so great you let the big breeders go I'm in Florida and they don't release nothing the commercial guys get on the spots were there spawning and they just wipe everything out in fact it's getting to where you can't even catch a sheepshead now in some places
I hate to hear that. We have guys that do that here. Can’t do anything about it unfortunately because it is totally Lagal. , but what I can do is encourage others to release the big girls.

Oh yes. They are an underrated fish. Very tasty, especially if you bleed them out

Sheephead population is unbelievable high. I say keep as many as you want. We would say they're as thick as pollution. Steam the fillets cool and use canned tuna fish recipe. Mayo celery onion etc.
I would agree with you that the population is high…but if everyone starts keeping as many as they want on top of the commercial fishing I could see it getting out of hand pretty quick
have you tried like a2/0 or 3/0 circle hook for them?
No, I don’t like using circle hooks for sheepshead. You will miss a lot of fish using them

We have drum in Michigan, we consider them a trash fish and throw them back

2 questions for ya. How much for a charter? And what size hooks, weights and line were u using?

And I mentioned in the video about my tackle but I was using a 2/0 gamakatsu octopus hook, 1/8oz egg weight, and 30lb braid to 30lb flouro
You said not to use light line. I agree but? Keep in mind your records you spoke of? Are ALL line lb test related. If you were to set out to set a new state record sheepshead? Go out there with 6 lb test line & look up the record for 6 lb test. You may never land it but BET you hook up with that record several times. Think about trying it? For the hell of it.

Yes. Very small egg sinker. It’s a “knocker” rig. Very simple but effective.
Don’t leave fish to find other fish…

I live on the great lakes and we call Freshwater Drum Sheephead so when I read you catching sheephead I was wondering why since they are a no good fish but then I see it's ocean sheephead and it all makes sense now

Years ago caught 2 that absolutely would not fit in a 48 quart cooler … was inshore on a bluff with tree fall in ga
Great memory …still fish that spot but never caught anything near that size … dove offshore near that area on grays reef … never see any that big

That’s right, leave them there for the next guy to catch or get em next time! Id much rather have fresh fish than out of the freezer anyways. Those must have been some slabs not to fit in that size of a cooler.

Here in Alabama it’s 10 person unless you have a commercial license then it’s unlimited

I’m not certain. Maybe to alert boaters in the area if there is heavy fog

This is my opinion during spawning season the season should be closed it just makes for more fish during the open season 🤷♂️. Like I said just my opinion
I would half agree with you on that. I think maybe have a “slot” size on them so everyone isn’t keeping all the female egg laying fish, however I think our sheep population is very good and makes for a great opportunity for anglers to get out and catch a few for the dinner table when they are able too.
