    I fish down south but never commercial. I eat Halibut too, but not as much because cost for us in Texas has risen quite a bit do to fuel and shipping. I'm curious did you guys far short of goal because it is becoming harder to find halibut? I know down here fishing isn't what it used to be when I was a young boy. It's a lot harder to fill a cooler with fish, crabs, anything.

    Fisrt fished back in the bad old derby days, 24 hour openings. Learned from and old guy who was 64, how to run stuck gear, set 40 skates off the chute in an hour. The second boat I fished the captain was in his thirties and ran snap on gear and thought he was the faster person ever at running a roller. He took 20 hours to run 45 skates of gear. The next opening I ran the roller and after eight hours was done and he asked me what we were supposed to do now. "Run in and anchor, bait more gear and set it, what else." He hadn't been trained by an old timer so didn't learn hard core fishing, "assholes and elbows," fishing..

    • @Brynnmarieblack
      @Brynnmarieblack  ปีที่แล้ว

      40 skates in an hour is pretty good! Sounds like you knew more than the second Captain you fished for! Haha

    • @algernoncalydon3430
      @algernoncalydon3430 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Brynnmarieblack Fished for a guy out of Kodiak one spring and he wanted to set five skates for halibut just to fill his freezers. I coiled five skates in the tubs, tied them together so I could kick one into the chute after the preceeding one ran out, and set the chute off the back of the boat and he came out and the captain said it was impossible that line would go out for more than a half second. I explained I'd set great that way many years and though it might seems impossible it really worked. I wold prove it it if we just tried. Nope. He insisted we run line from the reel and it took forever.
      Guess the old way is dead. Used to be unless there was a 150+ halibut one didn't stop the roller while running the roller, one had to shake all the fish as they came along, Not easy for left hander to learn to use the gaff like that, even if it was dogfish for a hundred hooks in a row.

    You have got the eye! Invest in some GoPro’s with multiple camera, angles, continue with shots that are scenery dominant including shots of the Mariners experience… shots of vessel, underway, piercing through waves, etc. Prepare for 10 to 25% of your work day changing batteries, changing camera angles, and utilizing your penchant for this art form by planning ahead. It’s a tall order, my dear, but I believe you fit the bill. Salutations, and, thank you!!
