I lost 120 lbs eating nothing but a gallon of ice cream, every day, for a year {yes, really, long story...sorry, don't think it would work twice}. Buying a whole new wardrobe has been expensive, so I saved my best clothes to repurpose them. I soooo appreciate your endless help in learning how to sew at a different level than I have been for decades. THANK YOU!
In the 1980's I found a gorgeous skirt in a boutique but was shocked at the price $50. I tried the skirt on and spent a bit of time looking at how it was made. Made my own pattern, headed to a material store and purchased the fabric and gorgeous bridal lace instead of ordinary lace of which the original skirt was made of. It cost me $21 and I used much better fabric and lace. I wore that skirt every chance, even wore it back to the boutique where I got the inspiration from. The manager thought I had bought it from her shop. I just smiled.
Thank you SO much for putting my picture in to your video. 😁 I was the person originally who saw things on Pinterest and thought. “Well that looks simple enough “. I was wrong and ended up making things I couldn’t wear. You really do need the skills to sew and refashion. That’s why I joined Vintage Sewing school. Not only do you teach sewing skills and reading patterns etc. you also cover refashioning skills which I haven’t found anywhere else. I went from a total novice. I had basic sewing skills but no idea how to do fit, refashion etc etc. Now I am so happy with my new hobby and my wardrobe is filling up with clothes I just love and fit me really well. That’s my tip. Join Vintage sewing school and learn how to make clothing that is perfect for you x
Aww Rosemarie you are dream student! And you did all the work!! You've gotten so good at sewing and creating because you slow down to learn what your doing, practice, and not afraid to fail! As that's how you learn more! And I'm definetly upgrading my last wrap top have flutter sleeves! You made the design even better!! ❤
I substitute teach kids from Kindergarten to Seniors in High School. I am constantly telling them, "The only way you get better is by practicing. You are not born with knowing how to do something." I love that you showed us your original one to the final product, I think beginners get frustrated when things don't turn out the way they were hoping. Thanks for showing that you, who is an expert, also has to tweek things to make them look like your vision. I think it gives others confidence.
Fantastic advice. Began sewing when I was 10-11 (my mom was my teacher, an excellent seamstress in her own right) and finally made wearable clothing at age 12 (thanks to my parents for encouraging me), am now 73. Began making garments from cheaper fabric until my sewing skills developed from beginner to dressmaker level. Made lots of mistakes but did not give up. Now I make almost everything I wear. Might even give underwear a whirl. I still make mistakes but my seam ripper is my friend. So don't give up. Every "mistake" is truly a learning experience. Your wonderful site showing all of us how to redesign clothing is the best idea ever. Refashioning at its highest level. You are an excellent teacher. Look forward to watching all of your videos and learning new tricks of the trade to use on my own projects. Happy sewing everyone.
I wish we could have seen you wear the blouse so we could get a clear picture of the ideal fit. You mentioned that the mannequin didn't do it justice and it already looked amazing.
I refashioned one of my husband's short-sleeved dress shirts into an apron. I cut the collar so that it was still attached in order to use it has the strap that goes around the neck and go rid of the sleeves. I also sewed the front and back together to make it double thickness. Anyway, I just "winged-it" and it turned out great and I use it almost daily. Now I want to do what you have done because my husband has lost a great deal of weight so I have a ton of practically new dress shirts to work with.
Thank you for all your sewing tips. I'm 74 and in my teens used to make all my clothes, but haven't done it for 50 years. My body has all dropped now and can't get good fitting clothes, so I want to try again. I'm just debating whether I should get a dummy.
Me, sitting in the park, unpicking the seams of my 1st ballgown to refashion it into a 1930s style beach pyjama, watching this as inspiration. Thank youuu! Great help and I LOVE the final product of this refashion
Now at the ripe old age of 65 I have become very interested in pattern fitting ,this is new but I am jumping in to give it a try , your videos inspire me to try thrift alterations. thanks for sharing your knowage. I so enjoy your lovely personality.
I have a vintage skirt (from the 70s) with a very 1940's silhouette and print, plus a lot of extra matching fabric. I wanted to make a top that I could wear with it so that it would look like a single dress, so it needed to be fitted but also adjustable , as I didn't want it to become too small or big in the future and thus a waste of energy. THIS (especially the flutter sleeve version) is EX-AC-TLY what I needed !!! It even fits the era I'm aiming at perfectly !! thank you for sharing this.
I recall a dress my mother had in the 50s that worked very similarly. The front was a fitted sheath with darts, and the back section was fitted like the sheath but the bottom was a full circle skirt that wrapped in front. I recently saw it again on the Great British Sewing Bee (I think season 2?) It's a lovely look and a very quick sew as well. It also had a bias binding along the sleeves and the wrap front.
That is funny that you mentioned the very dress that I just was just working on. I cut it out years ago and decided I needed to finish making it. It is not a difficult pattern, and looks pretty basic, but it fit me sooooo poorly, that I decided to take the dress, and the pattern, wrap it up, and give it to a thrift store. I am far from a beginner seamstress(sewing over 45 yrs yikes!)but I knew I did not feel like making it work.
@@judyjennings-gunther4022 you are not the only person I've heard having issues with the fit of that dress. It's a nightmare from what I've seen so I am steering clear
I love ❤️ the purple blouse I refashioned in your Vintage Sewing School. I wear it all the time. I will refit it once I finish your Fit and Alterations classes. I picked up a pink men’s shirt and plan on practicing this refashion again, Lily Munster style. 🤣🥰😇❤️🧵🦋
What a great way to use a man's shirt! There are several in my hubby's wardrobe that no longer fit, I know what is going to happen to a couple of them! Thank you x x
I love your re-fashioning. I see so many cute cropped outfits... but I won't wear any of them... I have done a few of the ideas I have seen in your videos. I like the little embellishing idea.. I have changed out buttons, added trim, etc... THANK YOU.
I remember the same rectangle top in the 70s. Love this idea using mens shirts. Have to try a different version due to my weight and age but i love sleevless and collarless!
you are so right about refining. about 4 years ago, i wanted to see if i could make myself a simple cap from old jeans. i made patterns modeled after 2 caps i like: a small brim rollable baseball cap, and an army fatigue type. needless to say, the first attempts, while wearable, left something to be desired. i ended up making about 4 of each type, refining the patterns each time. i'm quite pleased with the latest ones!
Yahoo!! From this video my brain finally clicked about refashioning. I have been following your videos and joined your fashion school. Mainly to re-learn and learn how to sew. Not to make for a specific era. Now a whole new world has opened up to me. Thank you so much Evelyn😊💗💝
Such inspiration. I usually envision the garment in its final stage as I hold it in the shops. Seeing what I can change/alter/reshape or size then thinking about materials I have that can give that umph to the garment. Though designs change as you go through the process.
I love this design and the fabric . I have seen one with a ruffle on the bottom . The idea of adding the sleeves really appeal to me . I really like the lace that you added too .
This was incredibly helpful and timely! I also went back and watched the video you looked from a year ago about "mistakes." Also super encouraging and helpful!!
I commented in one of your other videos that I could see what you had done with this shirt to blouse. So, I was pleased you covered it in this video. I like the way you take us through the ideas and changes to come up with the final blouse. Pretty much what I thought really but you have given me ideas as to what I can do, thanks so much. I threw away a lot of my husbands old shirts last year!! How I wish I had kept them!!
Evelyn, I loved this video!!!! Yes, I definitely noticed this top & assumed you would tell us about it when you were ready. Thanks so much for sharing it! Your student who wanted sleeves did a wonderful job. She had a brilliant idea!!!!! Thanks again for a great informative video. Take care and God Bless.
It’s hard not to smile back 😊 when seeing your Beautiful face. I myself way to do a refashion with one of my husbands shirts. I’ve done one before , I made a cute little dress for my daughter but I had a lot of help from experienced sewers, I’m blessed to have them in my life. Thank you for this I love it I will be making this guaranteed.
I prefer blouses with sleeves. I love all your versions but I will try to make one with sleeves. Thanks again for another great refashion video. Love Lynne
Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous!!! All three were interesting and looked sort of easy to try. The bias binding look is so neat. The last one was the most beautiful. I love to watch your various sewing treasures...good one Evelyn, I was hoping you would do one on this topic! Happy sewing everyone!!! 👗✂️👗
My method is to wear the renovated or sewn from scratch item for as long as it takes to know if feels and looks right and if the fit is good. This creates a problem with seam finishes because if you are potentially going to change a seam there is no point in doing a seam finish and you can even make it more difficult to make changes by finishing the seams. Also some fabrics grow and shrink a bit with wear and washing - linen and denim in particular and it might take time and incremental changes to find the right balance.
Love the last two. I’m an advanced beginner I think although I’ve yet to make a garment that I am happy with. I am always thinking of refashion h my clothes and absolutely the the 1930-40 style so because of that I am joining your school. Can t wait to get better at sewing
Thank you so much Evelyn. That’s very very helpful and useful..... I really really love 💕 this....and I’m not keen on the no sleeves, just because I really don’t do sleeveless garments but your students version with the half circle ⭕️ sleeves look very good too. xxx Mags
I'm not very experienced, yet I can see the differences. I like details. I get too impatient to work on projects over and over. It makes so much sense. As you said it is a muscle I need to develop ...before I develop those other muscles. Better eats me spinach. I really like that pleat detail in the back of your blouse; the one your thinking of leaving out. My inspiration comes from different eras. Mashing them up. My design process goes ok, but the follow through is awful. It is as I said in 3rd sentence -patience deficit.
I absolutely adore this top! I was inspired by the same 1950s wrap top, and made my first recently. But I'm so digging the button-up look and I'm going to try that on my next one! I may even try a belt closure for the front to cut down on bulk. Exciting stuff!
Such wonderful content (as always)! However, it might have been easier to understand the differences in the versions if they had been shown on both the mannequin AND yourself. I'm sure all the sewers (especially beginners) would appreciate it! ♥️
As I was struggling to fit a vintage vogue wrap dress (aka their version of walk away dress) it didn't fit at all. Measurements are not correct and it is very long in the waist line and I have a high waist. About to give up and I just have it to God. And then got into the bath and first video that pops up is this one. He answered my prayer. I thank you for this tutorial! Now I know how to fix my dress in time for Christmas!
I love this design soooo much. I tried the same pattern you showed from pinterest but I used the wrong fabric and I couldn't figure out how to cover the sides of my body properly since the front and the back don't overlap quite right. Perhaps it's time to give it another try🤔
If I sew a new pattern, and I am happy with it I will sew it again several times and then I will think about how to modify or streamline the pattern and do that a few times. Great skill practice.
Have you thought about adding a peplum to the waist on the one with the petal sleeves? This refashion really reminded me of tops that had peplums that I saw my mom in photos from the 1940s and 50s
Oh this was so interesting I’d love to work up to this sort of thing because I love thrifting. I just posted my first sewing project on my channel I made a skirt from a 1933 pattern but I doesn’t quite fit so I need to learn how to adapt a pattern so it fits better that’s my next skill and I think learning as I go will serve me well. Your videos are helping me so much to see where I need to work towards so thank you....if you ever watched my first sewing vlog you probably would see so many mistakes hehe xx
Love watching your videos. Did you make your bracelet/pin cushion? If you did could you show it and tell us how to make one. It looks like you took a nice wide bracelet and added the necessary fabric and stuffing. Thanks
Evelyn I love your look style attitude. I just love everything about you. Teaching to sew all these lessons and also vintage style I love vintage night gowns n gowns with the fluffy tool. I want to join your school. I just got my sewing machine n i m so excited. I learned the basic of threading a sewing machine in school but that's all n I still remember. I hope I can be a great designer sewed etc I just love it all. Thank you for your hard work. Keep safe

I remember making a pair of wrap pants from a curtain when I was in junior high school (late 1970s). I thought it was something new and genius, but my mom said she remembered something of the sort when she was young. I love yours and your student's results. The only negative thing I noticed was when you use large stripes, you can't pattern match stripes as easily.
Oh! Thank you Rose 🌹 Marie! I will ask you about your process in the sewing community @vintagesewingschool. The half moon flutter sleeve add on will be super cute for my Lily Munster refashion 😇🦋
Evelyn, will you tell me about your dress making scissors? What make are they, the siz and the cost. I would appreciate it very much. Your tutorials by the way, inspire me.
Same thing multiple times ... yes, I'm doing that with longer gathered skirts now. I like to have waist bands and zipper closers. I don't like the drawstrings.
Does your newest version tie in the back like the first one? Do you think it would work if it buttoned or snapped in the back? Also, I love how you credit people who upgrade the original. I love how you have to attitude of always learning. I have watched and enjoyed other TH-cam Sewing shows, but there is just something that speaks to me about what you do and how you teach! Thank you and I look forward to hearing back from you. Also, I had a pattern question that was not answered, or at least I do not remember it in your Pattern video... When I asked another online sewing school, they were helpful, but it's like they only give me bits and pieces of help... Do you have an email address where I could send you some info about what I am working on? The Pattern said Easy To Sew... I have found this is way above my skill level. Can you help?
What a cool idea to use a shirt collar for a waistband. Something i meant to ask you, that perhaps you did do a video on already and I might have just missed it and that is, hat I bought a second hand jacket the other day, and thought I'd love to take of he sleeves, that is to say shorten them to come just over the shoulders. What's your advise on how to do that, as I have never done it before.😇
@Evelyn Wood Have you considered offering your workshops individually? Your patterns for sale individually? Though I think there's value in a membership site for learning to sew, I would like the option to just pick & choose what I want or need in the moment. I didn't see this as an option anywhere, but I could be missing it. ✂️
The only major refashion I've done was turning a size 24 designer dress with makeup stains on the shoulder into a size 14 skirt and size 10 top/bodice! The skirt I just had to remove a panel and cut the waistband out of that, and then the top had so much fabric from the sheer size decrease I just made a pattern off a garment that fits me well and cut the pieces from the top as if it was normal fabric. I didn't get the lining and bust fit quite right and it's too short, so I don't wear it a lot as I don't feel great in it, but the skirt is a firm favourite. Put a massive pocket in it too! Reconstructing/tweaking that top definitely needs to go on my to-sew list, but I haven't got any solid ideas on how to fix the too short problem as there is no matching fabric left at all (I even used the original cabbage for binding!) to extend it with. Maybe I could remove the wonky lining entirely and make a peplum out of it? They have a habit of making me look pregnant though... Anybody got any better ideas?
The tie technique is so clever. I‘ve never seen that before 👍 I totally suck at ‚designing‘, btw 😂. But I‘m very tenacious, when it comes to figuring out, how to make things work in a technical sense. I‘d rather deal with pattern making than drawing, any old day of the week!
When you said to make the same thing over a few times I thought of the TV show Mama's Family. Iola and Thelma always had the same dresses just made with different fabric and trims. Iola's seemed more of a 50s style and Thelma's seemed more of a 40s style.
I would love to join the online classes the problem is I don’t have a printer and I am anticipating that you’re going to have PDF files that need printing and my correct?
I genuinely once sewed a fitted blouse from scratch instead of adding darts to an existing sleeveless blouse because I didn't feel like putting it on, pinning, making it symmetrical, trial and error fitting, opening the bias tape and resewing it.
I sort of do the same thing but take the item apart again and try to fix it or change the whole thing. I mess up often so learning how to change or fix my mistake helps me a lot.
I need a good tutorial to turn a jersey knit maxi dress into a wide leg jumpsuit, but without cutting waist. I will add a long zipper to back but I don’t want a waist seam. Any good videos out there?
I hope you enjoyed this video! Share with us in the comments, how do you get your design ideas? And do you develop them like I do?

I prefer blouses with sleeves. I love all your versions but I will try to make one with sleeves. Thanks again for another great refashion video. Love Lynne
I like Rosemarie's flutter sleeve version too!!
Thanks Mary! Bias facings are one of my favorite finishes
Thank you for such a great idea!! I had been stuck in trying to figure out what to do with a great thrift find and now I know. 👍🏼😍👍🏼😍
I love love love all the versions your created, your video's are so inspiring!
You are the best in the business!
Love the last two. I’m an advanced beginner I think although I’ve yet to make a garment that I am happy with. I am always thinking of refashion h my clothes and absolutely the the 1930-40 style so because of that I am joining your school. Can t wait to get better at sewing
Wow, I definitely want to try this! Thanks for sharing!
I found it! I had just asked if you have a pattern for this. I love this top. I'm going to steal my husband's shirt.
What a lovely project. So excited to head over to VSS to check out the how to!
Yay Sarah!! Let me know if you have any questions!
If I sew a new pattern, and I am happy with it I will sew it again several times and then I will think about how to modify or streamline the pattern and do that a few times. Great skill practice.
Yes! This is the way to it Deb!
Have you thought about adding a peplum to the waist on the one with the petal sleeves? This refashion really reminded me of tops that had peplums that I saw my mom in photos from the 1940s and 50s
I think I need to make one with the flutter sleeves and some colorful Rick-rack for a more Spanish look.
nice idea!!
Beautiful nice finished
Love watching your videos. Did you make your bracelet/pin cushion? If you did could you show it and tell us how to make one. It looks like you took a nice wide bracelet and added the necessary fabric and stuffing. Thanks
Yes I made it! I have a tutorial on my channel fir it!
Evelyn
I love your look style attitude. Keep safe
😄😄 Yay!! I'd love to have you in class and guide you on everything you need to to reach those sewing dreams! If you have any questions about joining just email me at info@evelynwood.com.au ❤
Your work is amazing
I love the piping on this particular shirt, so I wondered ... if you're going to put sleeves in this blouse, will you be leaving the piping in?
Great! Perfect content!
Thanks for watching!!
Love your tutorial ty
My husband will not have any shirts left after the lock down. I am inspired to make one or three for myself.
🤣🤣🤣 He might not be the only one left shirtless during lockdown!!
The second one is the neatest looking but all are nice.
Great ideas!! It's too hard to say without seeing it, just think on it a few days and the right design will come to you!
@@Evelyn__Wood been thinking on it six months! As it's a summer only top and I live in England, I still have another six months to ponder too!
I'd like to talk about this black and white outfit your wearing now. I love it! Did you make that?
Awesome video thank you !!!! :)
The tie technique is so clever. I‘ve never seen that before 👍
I totally suck at ‚designing‘, btw 😂. But I‘m very tenacious, when it comes to figuring out, how to make things work in a technical sense.
I‘d rather deal with pattern making than drawing, any old day of the week!
He he 😂 I love flat pattern making too!
When you said to make the same thing over a few times I thought of the TV show Mama's Family. Iola and Thelma always had the same dresses just made with different fabric and trims. Iola's seemed more of a 50s style and Thelma's seemed more of a 40s style.
Sounds like they had great sewing advice! 🤣
@@Evelyn__Wood I just imagine it taking a month to alter their pattern and them thinking "I never want to do that again."
😂😂😂
I would love to join the online classes the problem is I don’t have a printer and I am anticipating that you’re going to have PDF files that need printing and my correct?
I genuinely once sewed a fitted blouse from scratch instead of adding darts to an existing sleeveless blouse because I didn't feel like putting it on, pinning, making it symmetrical, trial and error fitting, opening the bias tape and resewing it.
Oh really!! Once you very over the 'un doing things' hurdle/mental barrier, I think it becomes easier! 😀
I’m used to it because most of my sewing has been repurposing old clothes. I can’t afford a lot of new fabric so I get it however I can
It is a great way to get fabric, affordable ans sustainable!
I sort of do the same thing but take the item apart again and try to fix it or change the whole thing. I mess up often so learning how to change or fix my mistake helps me a lot.
I think being able to know what to do when things don't do to plan, is where the real skill lies in sewing! 😄
Evelyn Wood thank you, i feel much better now. I feel awful when it doesnt work but then its liberating when it turns into something better.
Is there a way to add a piece, somewhat of a peplum to make longer for us a bit older.
You could certainly get creative and add something like this! I think from a different shirt though as there would not be enough fabric left over!
Very cool!
I need a good tutorial to turn a jersey knit maxi dress into a wide leg jumpsuit, but without cutting waist. I will add a long zipper to back but I don’t want a waist seam. Any good videos out there?
