  • The Urban Monk cleans the carburetors on his Suzuki GS550 custom cafe racer build. He also discusses why he chose to clean them as a whole assembly vs. tearing them down into individual carbs and how he is preparing to tune them for pod air filters and a custom exhaust. Finally, he clear coats his frame.

    Hi, I'm currently working on a 1977 GS550 project and I was so glad when I found these videos on your channel.
    The way you work is so methodical and the information you pass on comes across so clear and easy to understand.
    Thank you for taking the time to make these videos, I'm sure it must take a whole heap of time to do so but I for for one appreciate you taking this time to do so, thank you! Its such a great help and I can't wait to get started on this bike
    Best regards from Jamie, East Yorkshire, UK

      You've just made my day! Thanks for those kind words. You've exemplified the very reason I recorded the series. Enjoy your project and greetings from Los Angeles!

    Guitar strings work well for setting a baseline on your throttle valve synchronization too.

    I'm happy my comment influenced your decision, good point you made about owners eventually having to make such judgement calls, but your words "it would have been more beneficial for viewers if I were to take the carbs apart entirely" (paraphrasing) made me kind of regret recommending you leave it alone hahahaha.. I would have loved to see a tutorial as to how to completely take apart the carbs on this particular bike, especially one from you where the camera-work and accompanying explanations are equivalent to following a certified suzuki mechanics course.. we've learnt so much from you, I at least am eternally grateful :) by the way, high E guitar string but what gauge, 0.9? I read somewhere its not good to use metal for those holes, i used a plastic broom whisk (whatever you call those strands) with great success! Great point about "wrong" vm 22 pieces being sold on ebay!! thanks for the measurements info!!! lastly, if that loose T-link ends up leaking (hope it doesn't) maybe you'll have to make another video where you do in fact take everything apart. but for now i think you made the right decision considering how clean those carbs looked :)

      Thanks for your comments. I think your call is the right one here, for now. My daughter is playing lighter strings, so her high E would be 0.009 inch. I don't think one could do much damage with a guitar string in a jet if one was being reasonable about it. Best.

    I managed to locate a gs550 parts book , plus the added bonus of exploded diagrams

      Thanks for the feedback! Sure, I can dial it back a hair. It's difficult to choose the right level because different people have different speakers/headphones.

    Don't raise the needle. I did on my VM24ss carbs and it led to fuel bypassing the needle at idle and made the revs hang. Returned them to factory setting and all was good. Did change all jet sizes several times but finally found a good combination.

      Thanks! I was making that decision on a hunch. Reassuring to have your insight on the matter.

    So i got into rebuilding my carbs on my 78 550GS Suzuki and viewed your video and saw you had a baggie full of O-rings and wondered where you purchased them and also were they all different sizes? I also used the carb cleaner you recomended and found that it left a film that was hard to get off.

    • @UrbanMonkTV
      @UrbanMonkTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I got that assortment of tiny O-rings off eBay from China. Took a month or two to get here but I ordered the way in advance of needing them. They are more a staple 8n my garage than ordered specifically for this project. As for the carb cleaner, I'm sorry it left a film. I use different kinds and am not particularly attached to any one brand. Thanks for watching!

      Well thanks for your prompt response. I saw that someone had ordered parts from 2FastMoto so I gave it a try. I ordered 1-kit Carb rebuild kit for the GS 550. Comes with 2 gaskets jets and needles and a lot stuff I don’t think I need but anyway. I need 4 but @19$ ea I figured I’d see what I get before I order more. I resurrected just ordering the O-rings from partzillo , genuine Suzuki parts and they wanted 3$-change for ea o-ring and it looks like I need 4-per carb so I’ll see what I get and maybe order 3- more kits from 2fast .Sorry for the long msg. Vin

      @@vinfrancis1160 No worries. Those will probably serve you well. I should have mentioned I've also gotten good parts and prices from cruzinimage.net. website is a little cumbersome to navigate, but they have quite a bit of parts for GS550.

    I have a 1982 suzuki gs550l and I want to put pod filters on it, but I see on the air filter it has 2 air fittings for the main engine and the carbs how did you divert those and put on pod filters?

    Hi there do you know how choke works?

    • @UrbanMonkTV
      @UrbanMonkTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't looked very closely at the mechanism in these mikuni carbs but I assume the plunger valves on each carb close the idle air circuit when engaged (and of course open it when not).

    where do you find all your parts for this project?

    • @UrbanMonkTV
      @UrbanMonkTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a list in my book as well as a video with links on UMTV. Multiple sources. Many items through eBay, but those sellers are usually found elsewhere too. I find eBay protects me pretty well from the bad sellers. I've run into trouble a couple of times and always got my money refunded.

    starting at 19:33 you remove the air screw. its pointed and has a beautiful taper to it. I ordered a carb rebuild kit and it didnt include this screw and o ring, though i've seen other companies offer it. I have two broken o rings on those screws...can i replace that o ring individually or should i replace the whole screw itself? Issue there is i'm having a hard time finding just the screw

    • @UrbanMonkTV
      @UrbanMonkTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless damaged, you should be able reuse old screws and simply replace the o-ring. A used fuel screw can be purchased on Ebay. Just polish tarnished screw taper with baking soda or any metal polish. I've used toothpaste b4 too.

  • @crisdraaisma5680
    @crisdraaisma5680 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Perhaps I missed it, but why didn't you take out the air screw while cleaning?

    • @UrbanMonkTV
      @UrbanMonkTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You did miss it and it's my fault- I made mistake with my camera and failed to record it. As I recall it was a really busy week for me so I didn't go back and film it. Sorry. You're certainly correct to suggest they be cleaned.

    Hi! I have a GS550e 1977, did some carb cleaning and one of the "Idle air screws" ( 19:30 ) broke. I have searched the whole internet and some local stores but can't find them. Not on CMSNL, jetsrus, 6sigma etc. Do you have any idea why they are so hard to find, and where I can find them? :D Keep up the nice work, love to watch your vids.

    • @UrbanMonkTV
      @UrbanMonkTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a kit from 2fastmoto.com that seems to come with them. Perhaps they'll sell a single kit, rather than all four. Give them a call, maybe they'll sell just that screw. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
