About:
How to Start Fingerpicking on Acoustic Guitar for Beginners (No Experience Needed!)
Hey everyone, and welcome to this beginner-friendly fingerpicking guitar tutorial!
In this video, you'll learn the basics of fingerpicking, a cool way to play guitar that sounds amazing. We'll break it down nice and easy, so even if you've only been playing for a few months, you can jump right in.
Get Your Fingers Ready to Fly!
First things first, we'll loosen up and learn some proper hand positions to make fingerpicking smooth and comfortable. We'll also go over the finger names used in guitar, which will come in handy later.
The Fun Part: Picking Patterns!
We'll start with a super simple fingerpicking pattern using just the open strings. This will help you get a feel for picking with your thumb and fingers independently. Then we'll move on to a slightly trickier pattern that adds a little bounce to your playing.
Chords? We Got This!
Once you're comfortable with the patterns, we'll explore how they work with basic open chords. You'll learn some common chord shapes and how to fingerpick them using the patterns you just learned.
Practice Makes Progress!
We'll wrap up with some practice tips and even show you how to play a classic song, "Scarborough Fair," using fingerpicking!
By the end of this video, you'll be well on your way to fingerpicking like a pro. So grab your guitar, get ready to have some fun, and let's get started!
Thank you for watching my beginners guitar tutorial.

This complete beginners fingerpicking tutorial will get you started with this guitar technique
The 6, 5 4, strings are where you strum the chords and can also be considered the base notes.
Do you have a favourite open chord? I love the A chord.
Guitar. For Beginners. With Dave, You're fantastic! Let's be friends and have fun!
Thanks for watching! Very kind of you to say! Hope your guitar playing is coming along nicely.
House of the rising sun (6/8) time is a good practice song for this.
It sure is and is on my list of "to-do"s. How's your fingerpicking coming along?
Great lesson. Liked and subscribed. A couple of questions: Why DO they call them 6,5 & 4 string chords? Also,
did you first learn to play the G chord with your 2nd,3rd &4th fingers? I learned with my first 3 fingers. I notice a lot of online guitar teachers play the high E string with their pinky. Also, why don’t you cut the excess string at your tuning pegs? Not finger picking questions , just curious 🧐 Thanks
Hi there. Hope you;'re having a great day. Glad you enjoyed the lesson and thanks for subbing. 6 string chords, because you can strum all 6 strings (G, Em, E major). 5 string (C, Am and A major) you strum the top 5 strings only (A,D,G,B,E) and 4 string ones (F, Dm and D major) as, in this video's case, you strum only the D,G,B,E strings. The first G I learnt was just using the 3rd finger on the 3rd fret of the high E string. Then I moved onto the 1,2,3 finger version before moving on to 2,3,4 version which I prefer, makes it easer to go to the C major chord. As for those excess strings, stringing a guitar is my least favourite thing and I'm just happy to get them all on without going crazy!
Terrific.... cheers from Canada.... very difficult to start after using a Pick for 30 years!!! Help...
I would say you should make sure you get that hand position right. Just play the way I demo it with just the open strings. Get your picking fingers used to the pattern. Forget the chords for the moment and just work on the basic pattern. You can slowly start using the different chords when you begin to feel more comfortable. Thanks for watching. Keep at it!! Let me know how you get on.
@@guitar.forbeginners.withdave O.K....then will take out my Dreadnought guitar as it looks more comfortable than an electric guitar! I hope to seriously start now....as Chet Atkins said...if U finger pick U got your own Band!!!
You can do it on electric but I think it sounds so much better on acoustic. Get that dreadnought out!!!
Very good
Thank you. How did you find it? Do you use this kind of technique often?
very nice
Thanks for watching. How's your fingerpicking coming along?
@@guitar.forbeginners.withdave i can do it some im ok with with banjo rolls but i kepp going back to the pick i will keep working on it though, thanks for asking.
You'll get used to it by just constant practice. I love this style of playing and I can still remember my first few (slow) months of doing it. But after a while it'll be very natural because you'll have built up the muscle memory required to get it right. Keep at it!
The C chord is impossible for beginners 😢
Hi Storm. I'd love to know why you find it impossible. I could use your info to help make a video about it. Thanks for watching! How's your fingerpicking coming along? Are you able to do the basic patterns?
It’s all about muscle memory. Take your time and finger it correctly, making sure that the notes sound out. It will come.
@@guitar.forbeginners.withdaveI can't get my fingers to stretch that far and if I get my third finger on my first finger moves into the second fret 😢 It's so frustrating. I'm enjoying the fingerpicking with the right hand though 😊
You could try just the two finger version. Stop using the third finger, only the 1st and 2nd finger and only strum the top 4 strings. That's the version I started off with.
Very true. I'd never heard of muscle memory when I first started but it sure plays its part. Thanks for commenting.
More talks???? Just play with tabs
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. How's your fingerstyle playing coming? Have you been at it long?
