The way Luffy makes his heartbeat beat again, then claps his hands, turning the whole environment around him into rubber, and the music then kicks in is the most beautiful thing I've ever scene! My man looked so majestic!

I love that the Gorousei said that Nika fight style makes everyone around laugh and this is basically what happens to everyone that's watching it. I literally couldn't stop smiling through the entire fight.

The demographic for shounen anime being what it is, it is understandable that a sizeable chunk of the fans would be dissatisfied with the "goofy" power up Luffy got. I don't think anyone should be chastised as "fake fans" for their tastes either. It is the way it is.
But this power up is narratively perfect for a character like Luffy and an absurdist story about freedom and liberation like One Piece. I cannot put into words how much I respect Oda for doing what he wanted to do, instead of appeasing the fans. I believe that's what art should be. The canvas belongs to the artist, and the artist should have the freedom to say whatever they want using their art. Some people may not like it, we may loose some fans along the way even; but that's okay.

Well the goofiness will only last for an episode or more, this is just to show us how gear 5's power looks like to others, after that the real fight starts.
Sorry but I disagree, If you are a real fan you can go back and imagine all of luffy's previous battle and imagine the toon stuff right in you've just never been able to see it. The fruits power is imagination NOT toonforce, when he awakens you see the world the way he wants to. You also see Luffy beginning to awaken the fruit with G3 Lucci notices it and so does Flamingo they both comment on how his fruit shouldn't be doing what it does. There are One Piece fans and then there are "fans" and it's great to see vids of long time self proclaimed Haters enjoying and having a better grip on Luffy's awakening then the so called "fans".
It's nice how Gear 5 doesn't give Luffy an instant win or makes the fight too one sided. Kaido still is landing powerful punches and Luffy is still feeling every one of them

@@Trulystaxx I think his awakend form simply is now actually able to absorb a good portion of the attack as his gum gum fruit normally would. For one by having a much better self deforming ability and also by using the surroundings as a dampener.

It’s so refreshing having a high stakes battle that’s playful and carefree rather than serious and intense all the time. It suits the tone of the series very well too

@@ibzdagamer I think it's less about messing with Kaido and instead the new found power clearly has affected him mentally. It's just turning him way too hyper and humorous for him to focus, almost to the extent of him being a little crazy. That's what they were trying to portray with 1071. Or an example I can give of what I mean is to me Luffy's new found power seems to just be the anime version of The Mask with Jim Carrey. With that in mind though here's something to think about: Was normal luffy always goofy and carefree or did he become that way as a side effect of eating the Nika fruit?
The way both Luffy and Kaido smiled at the start... For them, this fight wasn't just about the fate of Wano, or about the One Piece. This battle was two warriors at their peak, looking to test their strength. Kaido wants to see if he's finally met his match, and Luffy wants to see if he can really take down an Emperor of the Sea.

Don’t know about you guys. But the Heartbeat scene with the drumming and colors, was more than epic for me. It feels like an other anime. I felt that drums and Luffys heartbeat like it was mine.. simply from an other universe this scene

One thing I love about Gear 5 animation so far is that it has juuuuuust enough of a hint of badass amongst the goofiness. That clap at the beginning is one such example. The rest after, though, is pretty much in line with the power, goofy animations galore, and it's been super well animated so far!

I never watched One Piece before, just a few scenes here and there, but MAN, the first 30 seconds are just... Perfect. You can literally feel the emotions in Luffy within the imperfections of this animation style and the way the artist utilized the sudden color switch to capture how strong his heartbeat is, is just insane.
It all captures the core essence of Gear 5 perfectly.
It’s very interesting to see newbies tune in for Gear 5th as their first viewing to see what’s all the commotion is about

The sound design for this episode was so good, the way luffy's heartbeat starts out slowly coming back, the ground is starting to become a little wobly, then it ramps up and luffy's emotions starts getting louder and louder, then his heartbeat starts transitioning into drums and then finally he CLAPS and the shockwave makes everything around him rubber is just SO DAMN CLEAN.This episode is an absolute piece of art, its a gift to everyone who's been in this journey alongside luffy and the strawhats, its the culmination of everything we've been through,this is it guys joyboy is back! This is the start of the end, THE DRUMS OF LIBERATION WONT STOP AGAIN!!!
I have been following One Piece weekly since 2004 so yeah this is amazing to see One Piece breaking the internet.
What a journey it has been and i hope i get to see the end.
The first 35 seconds is cinematic gold. Never felt such intensity and freedom and power in 35 seconds than right there. The visuals, the voice acting, the heartbeat turning to an instrumental beat. It was literally perfect. I can’t stop watching it.
I just watched it last night. I feel if this had been the FIRST thing we seen when gear 5 was introduced. the reaction to it would not have been so negitive. As it was it didnt ease the veiwer in enough. It was full tilt right out the gate. but this scene would have been a really really good alternitive. With the other one edited in later.
The *entire* fight is just, perfect. I had a big ol goofy grin on my face the whole time, just couldn't help it. We've been building up to this moment for over 1000 episodes, and now it's finally here, and everything I hoped it'd be. From the setup with Nika's legend to the music to the animation to the clash of ideals, it was all just fantastic. Cheers my fellow nakama's 🍻
As someone who’s lamented the lack of toon physics the past decade or two, Gear 5th will always bring a smile to my face 😊

I love how they used different animation styles to show the world breaking effects of gear 5
Using the most realistic scene I've seen in one piece animation BEFORE Luffy activates gear 5 is an incredible contrast between the "gritty reality" of the dystipic one piece world, the face of a fighter for liberation who fully embraces his inner being and lets go of all inhibitions to his expression that leads into a new animation style where the old cruel world literally loses its edges as the librrator changes it as he himself changed.

Them giving this art style for Gear 5 Luffy not only as an homage for older generations but to show how the older generations art style can still hold up even today due to its hand drawn quality was a good choice.

It's been so long since One Piece had me grinning like an idiot. I was all smiles this entire episode, the animators really made sure you understood what the essence of Joy Boy is. I couldn't take the fight completely seriously and I loved every second. It was just pure unadulterated whimsy and fun

This is the first time in a very long time we've seen a fight scene that is just straight fun. Last one I can really think of that was like this was Usopp vs. Perona in Thriller Bark. Hell, the last time Luffy had a fight that was this goofy and fun was imo, vs. Enel in Skypiea.

seems more like its satirizing anime but with loony toons/bugs bunny cliches, which i like even more.
Breaks the cliche? I mean, it looks VERY similar to every DBZ transformation, the rocks slowly floating, the change of character colour, the power surging around the character. It's pretty much the same as 70% of every anime out there.

I honestly LOVE the idea of Gear 5. It's like the show's saying "what if we pitted the over-the-top flashiness of an anime against the wacky logic of a Hanna-Barbera cartoon?". It's just so silly and yet it works so well. Major props to Oda, man's a genius.
Oda did the right thing. Every transforamtion (I am looking at you Goku and many others) came through exhaustion, aggression, anger. Luffy just advanced into Luffy 2.0 cuz hi semi-died. This Luffy is just 200% - all of his emotions, dreams and feelings are free and he can do whatever he wants. Oda wanted to be different and he absolutely succeed.
Goku achieved Ultra Instinct because he also almost died and the transformation was at least as epic as Luffy's Gear 5
I would say it's a tie.
Not EVERY transformation came from these three feelings alone.

Luffys durabilty is insane in Gear 5. But I wonder if he can withstand Akainus magma since his attacks are not just physical but also literal lava.
Luffy has better durability than Kaido, he is taking most of his attacks unfaced while being at 1hp (he is at the doors of death as Kaido stated)
It seems like Luffy turns everything he comes into contact with into rubber. So I assume it's the same for Akainu's magma as well.

All damage so far is negated, and he made Kaido's blast breath turn into rubber. I assume it's possible Luffy can turn Akainu's magma into rubber as well.
I have a theory that luffys love for his hat was so strong that after buggy damaged it in orange town he has been unconsciously turning it into rubber with his power without knowing it to keep it from being destroyed.
It’s extremely fun and light to its core, that’s what oda wanted and that’s great, it’s a breath of fresh air compared to other anime rn, not complaining about other anime at all

I think some people are mistaking Luffy goofiness for recklessness in this fight. Of course he is getting used to how the transformation makes him feel, but he is fighting Kaido with Color and Conqueror Haki at the same time. His awakening is being explored instinctively and he clearly portrays a level of conqueror haki that steps up to Kaido's.
That last punch was PEAK!
It's not even Luffy's fault really. Awakened Zoans have a side effect where their namesakes are much more influential on the user's personality in their awakened state. Luffy's behaving this way is a result of Nika/Joy Boy directly affecting him.

Between the "Why I Oughta" punches last episode and the "Feet don't fail me now" running, Luffy is really embracing his inner Looney Tune.
I absolutely love the Gear 5 animation, it brings a much needed smile to my face.

this 1 minute and 44 has every side of luffy on it, and IT is THE reason It's my newest and favorite scene from one piece so far. The color, the animation, fluid like he is becoming blurry and cartoony, felling all the things around him. He is not just joking around, but is listening to the voices of all things, removing all the bad feelings and suffering, and just being what he is.
He is funny, but not for the sake of being funny. He is funny because that's the way to lighten a heavy heart.
Momo, who lost his father the cruelest way possible, is watching. What could be better to him, than to see kaido beaten up by some funny dude? To be proven that Kaido is wrong, and that now HE is gonna lose?

These sequences take so much time to pull off to this standard. The fact there are people in the comments accusing this episode of having AI generated animation. I didn't realise we could reach that level of ignorance. do your research before you accuse. "shaky" animation doesn't equal interpolated OR AI generated.
Gotta love when luffy is animated so good to the point where it looks like a 3D model just because of how fluent it's animated

I genuinely cannot understand how there are people who think this was a bad power up, like what show have you been watching for the past 1071 episodes? Gear 5 embodies everything One Piece stands for, especially the concept of freedom. Luffy is so free now that he isn’t even bound by physics or reality itself.

@@ZackstaDaxta yeah that’s an unfortunate fact for a lot of these cases, they either skip massive amounts of content if not the entire show then act shocked when they don’t understand why the power up makes so much sense.
@@redhotchikapepr8978I can confirm, I did not watch the anime. There’s nothing about it that seems worth the journey at all. This transformation seems unique, but unique doesn’t mean interesting or engaging. Gear 5 definitely isn’t something that will get someone into One Piece. Or at least not me. If I wanted wacky cartoon animation I would just watch cartoons. If I wanted such a light tone I can just watch Slice of Life. 1000+ episodes for an a moment that would make me feel nothing is not worth it. But my opinion doesn’t matter. Just enjoy.

Exactly. The animation and direction was there, it just didn't fit the tone of the whole show. That was the problem of the pain vs naruto fight
I love how near the end Luffy uses three different devil fruit abilities, he uses a light fruit attack, a spring fruit attack and flies like he's using the spin fruit
it's all rubber based. luffy spinned in punk hazard, luffy's g4 is basically springs, and idk what you mean by light, if you mean the rainbows that's filler for dramatic effect.

This is the coolest luffy's ever looked in Gear 5. The animation sells it. He looks so majestic.

I think what's terrifying is that it almost seems like haki (one of the only ways to hurt devilfruit users) has no effect. Kaido has to be one of the strongest haki users in the anime, so to see luffy constantly bounce back from attack after attack after attack is bonkers.
Luffy has stronger haki than kaido at this point because he learned ryu haki just wait

It does have an effect. Luffy is taking damage here. It's really annoying to see anime only viewers completely misinterpret gear 5, this fight, and luffy's fruit.

This is different from any anime transformation instead of typical rage. I love it the music/animation everything. Then it becomes into something and it awakens the carefree kid inside of you and just makes you laugh.

OK, syncing Luffy's heartbeat with the drums was a brilliant move.
I love that the “epic moment” Luffy has after transforming back is immediately undercut by him goofing off and taking Kaidou’s kanabo to the head.
Seeing Luffy tank Kaido's downward bonk seems like a callback to Alvida doing the same during the first arc.
In a world where all the other anime are starting to look the same and be so predictable, this is refreshing

@@dc6502- because Luffy made it unique and changed the idea of rubber powers which actually made look at other rubber power theme characters differently like look up Plastic Man and see why Batman thinks he’s a omega level threat. Plus the fact that Luffy has the power to humiliate his enemies is another plus side of this power like when have you seen a character humiliate someone like that deserves it plus he fights like a Monkey King which is another theme about Luffy.
