      If you got plastic frames (acetate, poly carbonate, etc.) you should clean the frames as well Use a really clean dry microfiber cloth. You can just wipe them down and off with that. Oils from your fingers and hands when taking the glasses on and off can get onto the lenses from the frames and that can cause smudges on the lenses. Cleaning your hands and face really good before taking your glasses off or putting them on would Not hurt either.

      I've used upto 50% alcohol content but it didn't damage any of the glasses or screens at our home. I reckon that 30% alcohol was the sweetspot. Pancro lens cleaner (film industry standard lens cleaner) contains 60% ALCOHOL and yet it doesn't damage lenses.

    Hmmmm. For me I just use warm water at my sink. Then a small, small amount of Dawn. Then rinse, and dry with a microfiber towel. Her advice is spot on. Very good video. Cheers!

    Yeah used to do dirty dusty construction work ( but no longer ) and eyeglasses would get scratched up fast . Wow , eyeglasses have no scratches at all using water and hand soap and drying with microfiber . And even this eyeglass shop manager told me that anti glare coating only last about a year and then flaking off happens but heard only if exposed to high heat a lot ? I live in blisering hot south Texas

    On a unrelated note I use Dawn to shower. Shampoo and everything, no conditioner. It works wonderful and of course as you mentioned they're always testing it on animals and people applaud them for that.
    (I still can't believe they found such a clever way to admit to that. Wonder what they're going to sink next.)

    I just got 2 new pairs of glasses. I have been wearing glasses since I was 5. I just bought Zeiss lens wipes and Optix 55 lens spray. Are both these good? They both have AR coatings. I always find cleaning them daunting when I get a new pair. I just don’t want to cause damage to them. Yes. I keep them in the case when I am not wearing them..

    Hi- I would like tips on cleaning the frames. My glasses have white crunchy stuff (oxidation?) on the sides and over the ears. I’ve had my glasses a long time and it just started happening. It’s on the plastic. Thanks!

    • @marvynthemartian
      @marvynthemartian ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s totally normal, especially if you’ve had your glasses a long time. It’s the result of the acetate drying out + the natural reaction between your skin oils and the environment. You can most likely have them refurbished/polished to remove it. However, if your frame isn’t in good shape, there’s always a chance they could break. An alternative to that if you don’t want to spend the money or risk a breakage, is to lightly coat the frame with olive oil, let sit overnight, then wipe away with a microfiber cloth. Be careful not to get the oil on the lenses, but if you do, just clean it off. Repeat this a few times a week and you should see *some* improvement, though nothing will rival the refurbishment. If you need your glasses daily, and this is your only pair, I’d start looking for a second or backup pair so you’re prepared.
      Also, for your next pair, a preventative measure to this happening on your next pair, is to wash the whole entire frame, not just the lenses once per week and more often in the hotter months. I also don’t recommend Dawn for this because, over time, Dawn will speed up the drying out process for acetate materials.
      Good luck!

    I was over a friend's house a few hours yesterday and their wood stove is not working properly. Eyeglass frames have a slight but noticeable smoky smell. Any other recommendations for how to safely clean smell from frames with scratch-coated lenses? My eye doc's lab tech called and recommended a very small drop of Dawn on a washcloth with lukewarm water. Fortunately, the smell is starting to fade. Thanks Dr. D.
