  • Watch Yoga Anatomy expert Stu Girling talk about the Sacroiliac Joint pain and injury for Yoga practitioners.
Sacroiliac joint pain and dysfunction can be confused with other conditions that arise from the spine and the hip. Not only can these conditions be overlapped, but they can be linked to causing lower back pain.
Treatment for SI pain can include physiotherapy, chiropractic manipulation, yoga.

The sacroiliac joint has evolved to have a limited range of movement. Injury or overstretching the ligaments increases the range of movement. Since the relatively non-stretchy sciatic nerve passes over the SI joint, this often leads to chronic sciatic nerve pain. It's a real pain in the butt. To relieve the sciatic nerve pain, you must allow the sacroiliac joint ligaments to heal (this takes many months) so that the joint once again has a limited range of movement. MORAL: If it hurts, don't do it. Try not to overstress that SI joint.

This was very helpful. I had some SI joint injury, made some of the changes suggested and felt better. I also backed off practice for a little while, halved my practice basically, concentrating on the asanas that were therapeutic to me while healing and that helped too. Now I can return to a more vigorous a little smarter and with out pain.

Thank you so much Stu for this very informative video. I seriously injured my right SI joint a few months ago. It kind of crept up on me without much warning... working on legs behind the head in supta kurmasana. Your video has helped me a lot to avoid furthering my injury and help stabilize my SI joint. Thank you for putting out such quality videos!

For me this started in the primary series, when I'm practicing my forward fold. I'm going to stop practicing for a week, rest my body, and slowly start practicing my body again. When it comes to he spine, and hip it's always better to be safe than sorry.

You are so nice and a real joy to listen to. I have been trying to put my feet behind my head way before I am ready. Through your other video on hip external rotation I have learned I am externally restricted. Thank you for the exercises and knowledge you have shared.

Love your videos.. thank you for taking the time to explain
Trying to provide my students with all of those small, important cues of do and donts, to, hopefully help them to understand their own bodies a little better, and adjust the postures to fit their bodies instead of the other way around

Yup. I hurt my left SI joint with leg behind the head of the right leg. Heard it pop too. I'd been doing it for a while but this particular day I skipped my usual warm up postures as I was pressed for time. That was a HUGE mistake. Thanks for the wonderful PSA!

What simple exercises can i do to alleviate the pain?

  • @cherylkakacek7410

The saving grace I got was prolotherapy to tighten the ligaments around the SI joint. My insurance did not cover it but I did it anyway and now I can stand on one leg and put my own pants on. PAIN relief was the added bonus!

I have trouble in doing backbends, I get sharp pain in my glute doing any backbend. No pain in frwd bends, in fact my frwd bends are really good. My back is also quite flexible but this pain is not letting me move frwd. What i understood here is, that mine is not SI pain but what could it be then pls help if you can.Your video with Joie miles on salabhasana helped.

Hi I believe I have a left SI joint problem however I'm not so sure. Is there anyway I can confirm or have a test to show its a SI problem? Also I'm getting pain in the bottom of my left foot. I have started training again after a few years off due to lower back injury. When running on the treadmill after the workout I get pain in the groin area. Is this SI related? Many Thanks

Language question to native speakers: Does he say "talking" the joint as it says in the transcript (which I suppose is created by AI)? I couldn't find any fitting meaning of "talking" on the internet. I mean, he explains it, but I just was asking myself it it was really that verb or maybe a different one.
