- CHUMPHON, THAILAND - Sataw, petai, bitter beans, smelly beans or stink beans. Whatever you want to call them, this intriguing Thai food which I want to eat for the first time. The scientific name is parkia specios and it is found all over South East Asia, especially in Southern Thailand. Chumphon Province is the first time I have seen them on this trip and since the weather in Chumphon has been very bad. Let's try a new food experience. I stop off in a little beachside restaurant on Wua Laen beach. I order Thai stink beans with shrimp from the lovely Thai chef at the restaurant. I watch her prepare and cook the stink beans. I hope you enjoy this Thai food experience where she shows me how to cook stick beans and shrimp stir fry. Later I try and explore more of Chumphon Province but it is just so windy with the storm that I nearly lose my drone and have to cancel filming.

HI Joe, this clip you have finally feel at ease conversating with the locals, and it shows. So proud. Anyway, the stink beans are uniquely tasty, for sure. Will you eat them again?
haha yes Panna, I often don't manage to film it since I think people change when they are on camera. But she was a star. I loved stink beans, I will definitely eat them again if I see them. A really unique flavour which is hard to describe. Do you like them?
I got some from my local Thai grocery store in Cardiff after seeing Mark Wiens making his famous face while eating some. Not quite sure how to use them, I found them quite sulphurous. That looked lovely though.
It was really delicious and such a unique flavour. Maybe it takes a little getting used to. You should give it another go
Hi Joe, this lady is so lovely, her interaction with you is gorgeous and she is a great cook ! The food looks so 😋 delicious and well presented, - as i think stink beans arent they a bit creamy as well ? i dont remember....Wonderful place and view ! Thanks a lot for showing this food an place, love it !💝🙏👍
Yeah she was so kind, made all the difference that she spoke a little English do I could interact, that’s where I fall down not speaking Thai. Definitely not creamy, there’s a crunch to them. The flavour is really hard to describe
Look so delicious But I've never tried it before. 😋😋
You should!! It’s so good
I don't eat stinky beans, but seeing the food makes me wanna try. Looking at the little seasonings, perfectly cooked by a pro, i guess.😅

I tasted them and trust me I'll never do it again! My intestines didn't appreciate and I had to take probiotics during 2 weeks after that. ;-) Even if we know and love Thai food and spices.
Oh thankfully I didn’t have an experience like that. I wonder why

So nice, auntie can speak and understand English well 😊
Yes, she was really really nice
I don't have any problems with the pungent smell or taste of the shrimp paste but unfortunately I can't handle the spice level the same as you Joe. Chumphon looks beautiful, I was curious what the best time is to visit?
haha you can ask for less spicy don't worry, it isn't a challenge, just what you enjoy. I think January - May is the best time to visit Chumphon and the Gulf of Thailand.
I love stink bean with prawns and Kapi. Can’t resist ordering it every time I see it on the menu😊
I think I’ll be the same from now on
A man who’s not really sure where to take this video 😂
Anyway im gonna make same dish right away

*Ups sorry, typo 🤭
hahaha no need, I love it spicy
You should have to say cuppy as nghapih
มันเป็นอาหารที่กลิ่นแรงมากๆสำหรับสตอ😂😅
It’s so delicious
I prefer a wet stir fried stink bean with ground pork and shrimp paste. This depends on the style of cooking.
Oh that sounds really good, I should try that
Like X2 the baby sprouts stinky

You have a strong stomach luv. I could not get pass the smell but i reckon once it got passed your nose your mouth and belly did not mind 😅
hahah! they are really tasty actually, you should try them if you see them next time.
Stink beans 😱😱😱
haha that's right!! Let's see if they are good or bad
Shouldn't say "waan noi" because if you pronounce "noi" with a wrong tone, it would mean more sweet. Say "waan nid noi" to make sure that it means less sweet. Enjoy your food.
ah good tip! thank you :)
