“My health is improving.”
He said as he smoked a cigarette with only one lung left.
Notice how he doesn’t stutter when he’s speaking with Elizabeth
That is normal.
Stuttering is psychological. When anxious or overwhelmed it gets worse. When relaxed it can go away entirely. When around those he loved he was fine.
George had gone through a lot of speech therapy even before his reign, and was almost completely over it by the time the war ended.
It only really flared up during public speeches
That poor girl! No one told her the truth; that her father was dying. When she started that tour, Elizabeth had no idea she'd never see her father alive again.
True. But in all fairness, nobody knows how much time they've got left. Yes, Bertie knew he was running out of time, but it isn't as if he was keeping it secret from Elizabeth. He was trying to make the most of the time he had left & he wasn't up to traveling. It isn't as if he was trying to die without his daughter at his side. He just thought he had more time than he did, is all. The king's health took a turn for the worse that nobody could have foreseen, and there was no way to inform Elizabeth once it became clear death was imminent.
I've some experience with this. The doctors told me that my father had more time than he did. I kept my distance for a time because I had a cold and was wary of making his condition worse...he'd gotten angry with me for visiting with a cold before. I missed saying goodbye to him by 12h and I wasn't nearly as far away as Elizabeth was from her father.
So correct. I doubt she would ever have agreed to the tour had she been told the truth about the King’s medical condition. But then I doubt that the Queen Mother was given the whole story either!
When she speaks of returning to Malta he is heartbroken that his looming death will destroy their family life they enjoyed. He had it foisted upon him unwillingly, so knows what she’s going to lose.
Watching King George cough and have his lung removed and still smoke... urf... it makes me ill. I understand the addiction but he was actually dying. It's really sad. Poor Elizabeth. She did the right thing by asking Philip to quit on the day of their wedding. She practically saved his life.
If one knows one's dying anyway, whatever the causes, it's not the right moment to stop smoking. Might as well enjoy what pleasures one has left.
But it certainly puts in question the family's forever statement that it was the stress that killed him, and that it was all his brother's fault.
Smoking was suggested by his doctors...it often was in those days. Then, by the time they realized it was bad for you, it was too late.
As for it being the stress of his brother's abdication and being thrust into a role for which he hadn't been prepared, it very well could have been that stress that kept him smoking even after they knew it was harmful and he had cancer.
from Legasov to the King, someone at the BBC was like 'this guy can REALLY cough! '
"That's why it's so important to have the right person by your side."
This hits hard honestly. Elizabeth was certainly lonely at times when Philip went partying and flirted with other women, unlike Porchey who hated high society and preferred peace like she did.
Charles needed the most love and Camilla knew all his likes and dislikes, but she was pulled away from him. Meanwhile Diana gained more love and popularity, which made it hard and lonely for Charles, and we all know what happened there.
Charles made things harder for himself. He wanted ALL the attention and got quite jealous of Diana. He didn’t even want Diana doing her Royal duties cause it hurt Camilla. Why should Diana give a shit what Camilla thinks?
@@destinywhite2063 Exactly. Diana's popularity is due to the amazing human he was and no one like him because of the little sh*t he was. To this day I think he and his mistress in a crown are despicable. Elizabeth wouldn't bend the rules for her sister which destroyed her but she bent them for Charles. She should've passed the crown to William and called it a day.
He was jealous and he shouldn't because her popularity should have been an asset to him and ge should have realised that .
@@nylotus I'm so sorry a pair of seventy-year-olds from a country you don't live in affects you so much. Could I interest you in the Danish royal family too?
Claire Foy is a truly remarkable actor. She manages to convey so much with her eyes even when she's not speaking.
It is obvious and touching how close the two are.
The late Queen had a wonderful father.
RIP The Queen
what i like, in Yes Minister (and Yes, Prime Minister), the civil servants are shown to burry the important stuff near the bottom of the last red box so by the time the Minister / Prime Minister gets to the paperwork, he is either too tired to realise what it is, or gets to it too late to prevent it.
I honestly wish he could have been honest about his condition. He might have been able to better prepare her for his death.
What did he expect when he married the Kings daughter? 🙃
Coughing up a storm and still smoking.
Charles was three - you can bet he noticed.
Jared Harris as the king actually SOUNDS as though he is about expire from lung cancer in this scene.
That sounded like a modern day COVID cough. 😷
My heart stopped every time he picked up the cigarette.wish he knew how he was speeding up his death.
Her eyes are so blue in the screenshot.
"Luck" had nothing to do with it.
I don't know how accurate this show is. But these scenes shows well the gender problems. She was the eldest daugher of the King and she still had to explain his husband that she has stuff to do 😀 A male prince would not even ask his wife about going to the commonwealth tour. Just announce it and expect the wife taking care about the children.
The members of the monarchy are still Christians. The bible very clearly says that a husband is the head of the household. Elizabeth might have been Queen of the country, but at home she still was under Phillip. Not that it mattered much. He still didn't get to keep his name, nor did his children. The crown and the government dictated to Philip what he could and couldn't do his whole life. Then you preach of a Patriarchy.... yet here is a man that I say would have said differently.
This was the 1950s
@@garygsp3 patriarchy was never about lifting up all men. It was about keeping some men on the top, putting women down and creating an ideology to prove its necessity.
British monarchy is a patriarchal system. It was a coincidence that sometimes queens managed to get the throne. It was never a coincidence that this system enforced people - including men in the royal family - to give up many aspects of their own decisions.
"too young to notice " why do people think this ??? my mother was the same.
They did t know much about a child’s early development.
You see in S1 Phillip loved the bone of Charles and then for the next four it went on it’s head
She raised a fine son who was friends with Epstein.
Oof she was a bad mother. “They won’t notice, they’re too young.”
Andrew certainly could have used more supervision.
@@hutch1197 Andrew wasn't born. But Anne said her parents were very loving, just away a lot
@@MsJubjubbirdfrankly I think it affected Charles.
But in those days this was normal for those of high society. Their kids were raised by nannies.
Well he did. Elizabeth was settled into her job and was able to focus more on the boys, Andrew was even her favorite. I think it's because he was so favored by her that he indulged and thought he could behave badly.@@hutch1197
lol and weren’t they on a GIANT YACHT 95% of the time? I think they could have squeezed two toddlers onto it.
