I lived in Italy for five years, in Milano. Traveled on and continued to enjoy and add additional wines to my palette. Visited Monte Vertine several times and met Sergio Manetti on one visit.
We had a fascinating conversation and he asked me to stay as he was receiving a visit from the Consorzio who would be tasting his Chianti and deciding wether it was acceptable enough to receive the “banderole” with the rooster designating Classico. He told me he would introduce me as an American visitor who spoke no Italian (I am fluent in the language) and report back on their conversation following their visit.
They tasted and the comments were don’t let him see how beautiful these wines are with your facial expression. These are the greatest and the best we have tasted so far. He is such a pain in the butt, but these wines are fabulous we can’t deny him, but he doesn’t follow the rules and so on.
Sig. Manetti was so happy to hear that he gave me a case of a rare vintage and as an extra a case of his grappa, a few bottles of that remain.

Thanks for this podcast. I love Italian wines and this helped in defining Super Tuscans. I have sold wines and Italian wines are some of my favorites.

Why would a 100% Sangiovese become Super tuscan or IGT and not DOC and DOCG

    • @TheUnknownWinecaster

Good question. The Toscana IGT covers all of the region (as opposed to the individual DOCs and DOCGs) so part of the choice a producer may make to label IGT may have to do with where he sources the grapes from, with IGT giving more flexibility. Also, the DOCs and DOCGs have stricter production and viticulture standards than the IGT does and the grapes an IGT producer is using may not meet those standards. Finally, it may be a marketing decision -- the producer may want to produce a wine that can be marketed as a "Super Tuscan" and that, by definition, means producing an IGT wine instead of a DOC or DOCG. Those are the reasons I think of off the top of my head. Again, great question -- wish I'd thought to address it in the cast. Cheers!
