    New intro by: ...
Welcome back to a brand new episode of Turdtowns the show that brings you the lesser known places in the UK usually for bad reasons! Today it's West Wales which is the combination of three counties Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire & Ceredigion. I did it this way as they are three of the least populated counties in the UK. For this video I will be taking you past Newport, past The Valleys, past Cardiff and past Swansea. In order to find the worst places in Western Wales.

Been here for 2 years and so far have seen some gruely crap. Saw a man get his head smashed through a shop window. The drunk and drugged up rages that occur on mainstreets is insane. Been here 14 years and agree for the most part with the video. The town has gone down hill in the last 5-8 years and you do see the effects of higher crime. There are two opinions about Aberystwyth, it is either great or terrible, and that's why nothing gets done about the issues. House prices are insane and I blame local estate agents and their greed.

I think the issue Aberystwyth has is it gets lots of groups of lads from surrounding small towns go there on the weekend with their 'represent their small town thuggishly on the weekend mentality' lol. Pretty much nowhere else in the entire mid Wales area for a decent night out. I used to go there often with a crew from Dolgellau which is like an hour north since there was nowhere worth going any closer lol.

Wales has some of the most beautiful scenery in the UK, but the economic and social decline in its towns is shocking. This decline has been noticeably accelerating within the past 25 years and is a damming indictment of the Welsh government. Even small towns, have many of the problems of crime, drugs and vandalism you expect in a big city and have stagnating economies with no outside investment.

    • @DrakeN-ow1im
      @DrakeN-ow1im หลายเดือนก่อน

You might need to delve a little deeper into the governance problems since most of them ultimately originate in Westminster.
So many years of Tory government - I include 'New Labour in' that category - has guaranteed an ever increasing divide between the 'haves' and 'have nots'.
From the 'Thatcher' era to the Brexit fiasco of lies and deception. the UK has become an empty shell of faded colonial aspirations with no national ambbition nor societal energy.
I left for other lands in the mid '60s but have maintained a close watch of the affairs in my old home; it saddens me that '"Hiraith" has faded into despair for the people who I once loved and was loved by and that the built environment has descended into so much dereliction and disrepair.

@@megthomas580 Absolutely, the very visible decline of many towns to the visitor, is attributable to severe social and economic decline which hasn't been addressed. What has been seen for many years and expected in many post industrial areas such as the South Wales valleys, is now spreading to smaller towns and communities in rural and coastal areas. Politicians are entirely to blame for this lack of response over the last 3 decades.

I grew up in Haverfordwest during the 80s and 90's , The town at that time had a bustling town centre, every Saturday there were hundreds of people shopping! I remember the crowds well and not a shop was empty, there were many private shops such a green grocers, butchers etc. The arrival over the years of supermarkets an out of town retail outlet just outside of town coupled with the financial crisis 2007-2008 gutted this town. Its decline over the past 20 years has been astonishing to see. Everyone I grew up with has left, the town and county suffer from the flight of their youth who travel far away to find work and opportunity, sadly there really is no hope for Haverfordwest .

One of the things that I noticed was that a lot of the caravan parks, which used to be okay, have attracted lots of drug dealers and petty thieves. Ditto air bnb. People I know in Cardiff love visiting Pembrokeshire for the day, weekend or holiday as it's so rural compared to South Wales. As soon as you get to Llanelli it doesn't feel so rural. Even the Vale of Glamorgan doesn't feel rural but commuter land. I loved Narberth, Tenby and Newport but not Fishguard. Milford Haven is run down because a lot of people living there used to work in the oil refinery or docks but those jobs are gone now.
Most beauty spots in South Wales are reclaimed former industrial land such as Tondu Park and the off road cycle ways are on disused railway lines. Many of these regular visitors would love to live in Pembrokeshire but for their jobs but also fear getting bored in the winter and missing shops, theatres, cinemas and restaurants.

I studied in Aberystwyth (1995-8) and it's staggering that the town now has a high crime rate. When I was there it was famous as a friendly town where you wouldn't stay lonely for long. I lived in south London but honestly remember being homesick for Aberystwyth when I was back there; my family were there of course but I knew nobody else. If it's because the police are nowhere to be found, the likely reason is that the police force has been underfunded and the reason lies in that turdtown you haven't visited yet, the Shitty of Westminster. Same with a lot of the other problems in many of the towns you visit; they are showing the same signs of depression that a lot of towns in this country are showing. Partly it's because fewer people go to shops now, because home shopping became more popular during the pandemic and other in-person entertainment venues suffered as well, but partly it's because this whole country has gone to the dogs since 2010. Councils were not going bankrupt before then.

Aberystwyth? One of my favourite towns in all UK. The climbable, explorable castle ruins on the shore, the cable car going up with amazing views, the terrific beach, the Marina a hundred yards after the castle, a beautiful beach promenade and lots of well maintained B and Bs. I think that maybe you were influenced by what you heard from other sources rather than what you saw. After all, you don't necessarily see the crime rate as you're walking down the street. I've visited three times and have never even seen, let alone encountered any kind of violence or even poverty on the streets .Also, whatever town you film on a gloomy grey day is bound to look dismal. I know this is supposed to be a mixture of comedy and shit-talking, but I've lived in Aberystwyth for over 20 years, and the review of the town is both one-sided and unenlightening. The University is barely mentioned, although the student body makes the town the most cosmopolitan in West Wales during term time. The National Library of Wales goes unmentioned, as do the castle and the castle grounds.
Most of the faults of the town are the same faults that you will find in most smaller towns in Wales, and in fact in poor rural areas elsewhere in the UK: bad communications, inadequate and ageing housing stock, loss of young population due to insanely high house prices and limited employment opportunities, strained policing and other services, and inadequate funding of local government. Crime is present, drugs are present - big surprise: but 'crimes per 1,000 population' is a very crude measure, and in Aberystwyth's case, most recorded crime is relatively minor. Violence is largely confined to clashes between local youths, students, and in the season young tourists. You are as safe in Aberystwyth as in most places in Wales outside the cities.
The main thing about the town is that it changes character quite radically when the students are present (the population increases by 50% plus), and again during the tourist season. You also seem to have visited duriing the late autumn or early winter. Nobody can do anything about the weather in Wales: but try again in summer. It isn't always as seen here.

Turd towns videos the best around with the commentary giving a real insight into the problems and issues. Needless to say not all will agree with your verdicts but 9 times out of 10 your spot on.
Can’t underestimate the lack of funding available from central government which was promised as compensation for leaving the EU.
Nowhere to be seen and local governments are going bankrupt with insufficient funds to cover the basics such as disability and vulnerable people.

There's some right holes therein including Slough, Banbury, High Wycombe (where I grew up), Milton Keynes (notable only for concrete cows) and Reading, which used to be merely boring but is now a crime riddled shithole blighted by uncontrolled mass migration.
Also Hungerford, which is notable for having hosted a mass shooting once and nothing else.

It's funny, I first saw your videos back in April when I was down in Milford (the Cornish one was first one) Sadly a lot of high streets are like this now, charity shops and boarded up windows.
Charles Street in Milford used to be a bustling place (well years ago it was, or maybe it's rose-tinted glasses) at least there were lots of shops, Woolworths, Trakka Sports, Rabaiottis, Millers (bike shop), Hughes and Max, Foster Powell. H-West used to be nice too, it's sad to see the state they're in. Online shopping and retail parks are often blamed but there must be more to it than that.

The town has struggled over the years like many other small towns!!..but our community spirit and love of our history has helped us remain and rebuild our lovely town !!
We have many hard working families and businesses in our community..and frankly if you find it that abhorrent to live here please feel free to find pastures a new!!
Myself and my family will always fly the Pembroke Dock flag as we have been in business since the 20’s in one way or another !

Interesting that you thought that Haverfordwest was worse than Milford Haven, I used to work a job in the public sector in Milford and I can tell you that the poverty and crime there is off the charts. Thanks for another thought provoking and wittily narated episode!
We moved to Pembrokeshire 12 years ago, at the time it felt like a lot of these places were just about to take off. Sad to watch them decline further instead. I guess brexit put a stop to all the european funding that was invested in regeneration schemes, and projects that generated local jobs. Online shopping, COVID and killing the cash economy, hammered nails into the coffin of the dying highstreets. Decades of tory corruption and budget cuts has siphoned wealth from the poorer majority to the wealthiest minority. These fringe towns with poor connectivity to infrastructure bear the brunt, with dereliction, drug abuse and rising crime rates symptomatic of that.
However, round here we are rich in community spirit and friendly people trying to live a more sustainable and connected lifestyle, partly out of necessity. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else, and getting out into the fantastic and uncrowded countryside and coastline is the major part of how we spend our time.

We've just come back from Machynlleth and visited numerous places including Aberystwyth and Borth. I must admit, I did say to the wife that both places are sh!tholes which is a real shame.
Aberystwyth has a good sea front and some good shops but seems to be getting worse and worse each time we visit, was surprised by how many were drinking booze at 10am, its a place I don't want to go back to anytime soon.
Borth on the other hand has a great beach and some good walks, I keep looking out for the petrified forest, I did say my other half that I bet many of the houses are second homes and you have just confirmed it. Walking along the main street there are some nice well kept houses but many are just in such disrepair. These people that buy second homes like this should be punished, they are ruining the area. It could be such a good place
Good video. Many thanks for sharing

Went to Borth in 1987 and stayed at "the Grand Hotel " which was a total sh*t hole and not worthy of the name "Grand", it looks exactly the same now as it did then. I remember waking up in the hotel and looked down the main street as two tumbleweeds blew right down the middle....that says it all i suppose.

First visited Haverfordwest in 2012. It was alright I guess. It is a place you go because there are no shops on the coast other than beach shops and takeaways. Returned in 2016, it was grim and drug filled. Came back again in 2018 and it was so bad I have not visited since. How a place can fall off so fast is incredible... Milford and Pembroke Dock have always been bad but Haverfordwest has been fine until recently and now it holds the cake as the biggest dump in Wales.

Time for something lighter. Canada, Ottawa, mid-winter 1965 and six "exiles' with the Canadian Research Institute huddled together to share homesickness. Five of us Welsh and one English girl from the Midlands who'd graduated from Aberystwyth Uni. Almost 60 years later I remember her cry of anguish.
"Oh God I'm so homesick. I'm so homesick that I miss Aberystwyth. And I HATED Aberystwyth!"
The other five of us were all ex-Swansea Uni so we understood her emotion!

I visited Pembrokeshire (Pembroke, Haverfordwest and Carmarthen) maybe in the mid to late 80s on a family holiday, we were staying near Kidwelly. Wasn't like this back then, usual screwing up by local failed politicians, I mean local councillors and their schemes. I see lots of pedestrianisation at work, because people who walk everywhere always have loads of money to spend in the shops, whilst the car owners with disposable income have no where to stop or park, don't drive past shops any more so go to the out of town retail parks that are owned by the aforementioned councillors.
