Carnival of souls the final sessions is pretty bad to me. In particular coming after the astounding return to form of revenge. Although I only heard it after psycho. It’s worse than that one haha.
a lot of people forget that COS TFS was basically done during the height of grunge however it was released when grunge was dead and nearly buried (it still reared its ugly head every now and then) which is why many KISS faithful and in general music fans are not responsive to it, that said the BKB on the Kruise has shown what potential there was with this album in a live settting.
It’s different and that alone makes it a special album. You can’t blame a band for pushing its creative boundaries. There would be no Creatures without the Elder. Sometimes it takes a misstep such as The Elder to realize what your strengths are. That being said the album in and of itself is not bad from a conceptual level. There are some greats songs (The Oath, Dark light, I) that would have fit in perfectly on a more standard album.
I just discovered your channel and subbed you up! Great stuff! I mainly talk rock vinyl on my channel and had a crazy RSD! Thanks for sharing the great music info, I joined the KISS Army in 77 and dig them to this day! Peace!
The Elder is my all-time favorite KISS album because it is so different. I can imagine a different version of the story every time I listen to it. I guarantee if it had been released somewhere between Destroyer and Love Gun, it would have been accepted. After Dynasty and Unmasked, so many (not me) KISS fans bailed on the band it was destined to fail.
for me I listen to THE ELDER in the original format re: storyline format, that way you get a feel for what a potential movie would be link which is essentially what THE ELDER was supposed to be in concept. Just remember on a mountain somewhere where only hero's dare stand the stallion and the bear.
JOE, Second question first. Rock and Roll Over, Love Gun, Dynasty, Unmasked, and Creatures of The Night, all have the songs listed out of order on the back of the covers. So, I can't see the Elder having the songs listed differently to be a problem. As for the first question. I like some of the album and hate some of it.
When it came out I was a confused little kid who didn't know what the hell I was hearing, now I think it's pretty bad with a few cool parts and ideas. Odyssey is good except for the falsetto, Under The Rose and Mr. Blackwell are interesting attempts that almost work, Escape From The Island could've been cool if it went somewhere,, that song where Gene cries is actually not bad, Just a Boy and stuff like that are not good, very not good! Thanks Polo!
No one would listen to this if it was their only album, it's given a pass due to all the previous albums. Has some ok songs like the oath, I, world without heros and under the rose but if thus was their first album they'd have no fans
I love the elder because sometimes artists need to take risk and sometimes it works and sometimes it takes a life of its own and all the songs are great and Paul Stanley and gene Simmons are great songwriters and just because all the songs on the elder are not about fucking women and driving sports cars and partying all night and day does not mean the songs are bad , I personally think it's a great concept album and Paul Stanley and gene Simmons idea about a a young boy in an island and searching for something is original just like pink Floyd concept album the well and the who concept album Tommy queensryche operation mind crime so elder is a great concept album and many kiss fans don't like the album because it's not about partying all night so I like it and great songs like just a boy , world without hero's, under the rose , dark light , and I song it's great 😃
Its very different, still good as an album and The Oath makes my top 10 Kiss Songs
Listening to it now in the car. 🤟👊
Perhaps Carnival of Souls is more controversial? The Elder certainly sounds more Kiss like.

Love the Elder

Hated it when I was a teen but like it now.

Hated it on initial release. Haven’t listened since to the full LP but I and A World Without Heroes are ok. Cover stinks 😂

It's not my favorite but it's just ok. I'd rather listen to the elder than listen to Animalize.
jOE...Can't stand the Elder......to me...unlistenable.
