Just wanna say I really appreciate your content, and discovered you in 2022 as I got back into cycling. Really great to have queer representation in an industry/internet-landscape that’s very bro-heavy. Always appreciate the vibes, and the work you do with RAR. Cheers!
+1 for sobriety. I also needed to stop drinking this year due to health reasons. It’s been hard, but strangely I don’t miss it as much as I thought I would. I also went for my first century in ‘22 and didn’t make it. I haven’t yet decided if I want to train for it again in ‘23. Thanks for this video! Nice to hear someone giving voice to these types of messages.
First off, I fully understand the grief from losing your father. My Mother passed in December of '19 and I still miss our weekly phone calls, where we constantly batted issues back and forth, giving advice and support to one another. Second, don't fret over not making cycling goals. I decided after I met my goals in 2017, I wasn't completely "satisfied". I just realized it didn't really make me a better person or cyclist overall. It actually did the opposite of causing me to develop a bit of cycling "burnout". So, after that I decided to just have one cycling goal....to just "Enjoy the Ride". I even had a custom stem cap made with those three words to remind me while out riding. So far I have met that goal every year.
Goals rarely work. However, if you have a well designed system in place and use it daily, the outcomes will be predictable. The challenge is making our "goals" or "resolutions" a priority. I'm with you on dietary health... I have prostate cancer and decided to go full keto ( no carbs no sugar) on Thanksgiving day to try and kill the cancer naturally instead of drugs, surgery and radiation, and have stuck with it 99.9% so far (2 small cookies in 6 weeks). I'll have an MRI in 3 more months to see the outcome. And I stopped all forms of "liquid calories" 6 months ago. I feel great, cancer notwithstanding, and have lost 6 pounds of fat so far. It has not impacted my athleticism at age 63. Happy New Year and good health to us all!!!🙂
I lost my father in April of 2022 and …Jesus 2022 SUCKED SO BAD. I also could never ever imagine a world without my Dad in it. All the best in continuing to feel through it all. Separately, whatever with not getting in the century. I am always too hard on myself and often miss out on enjoying cycling. I hope that you find a way to toe that line (I alknow that I never have lol). Finally, I’ve been sober for a minute and it’s helped with cycling and also dealing with a lot of the inevitable ups and downs of life, including the loss of my Dad. All the best to you in 2023! Love everything you post.
What a genuine & authentic post. I like the concept of 'ease' & 100% support the sobriety, be it temporary or otherwise. I stopped drinking almost 5 years ago in order to just give myself the best chance at being my best. I sincerely hope you continue to produce content - you've been one of the most wholesome, helpful & entertaining finds on YT in 2022. Happy New Year!
Another perspective if I understand correctly is that you got your dissertation done! early! and I assume cheaper.....and you got a job! (I think). Thats one hell of a year. A very hard year. Most importantly after losing your dad....that first year is over. The pain WILL go away. The existence of your father in your life WILL NOT. I lost my mother over 20 years ago....in my heart she's just down the street, or in the other room, she's always there even if I never see her....she's there. The pain, only sometimes. I pray for you that day comes soon. I hope your year goes well and a bit easier than last. Oh and thanks for the thoughts on sobriety....most of us could use less of that culture. Keep it up and don't be afraid to mention it here.
Happy New to you as well and thanks for another straightforward, honest video. “Ease, Sobriety and Joy” worthy goals for us all who live in this pumped up, cash fueled, media driven society. I lost both parents years ago and recently celebrated their winter birthdays reminiscing and reminding myself of the closeness of joy and grief. I also changed my relationship with alcohol over thirty years ago and have never regretted it. The gift of life is complex and more vibrant without the haze of drink… Finally, you bring joy to many through your videos. I love your quirky humor, the way you embrace your doubts and fears and your enthusiasm. Thank you and let’s have a wonderful 2023 together.
Me any Fiancee recently started watching your content. Don't stop. You have a great energy and have a very casual presence on camera which takes some content creators years to get down. My Fiancee also happens to be a successful content creator and is rooting for you all the way!
Really can relate to the sobriety piece of the puzzle! Sober since 10 years and it has really positively effected my health: mental, physical and spiritual. Joy to youandallof us as we pedal our way through 2023! BTW in my books, (up herei n southern Ontario Canada, )you DID do a 'century ' because 62 miles =100 klm! Flow and ease to you as 2023 unfolds! Thank you and all the best! Love the channel!
First, I want to say that I really enjoy your content here on TH-cam. I think you do a great job with editing and flow! Several things in our lives are somewhat similar: 1.) Cycling. In 2022, I returned to cycling after a 10-year hiatus for health reasons. I'd forgotten just how deeply I enjoy it. Pretty sure it's here to stay this time. 2.) Parental loss grief…enough said on that one. 3.) Writing about alcohol culture. I co-authored two books about alcohol history in Atlanta. I would really love to read your dissertation! ..oh and we are modulating our alcohol intake. So to me your channel resonates. Keep up the great work! -Ron
Thanks, Ron! So glad you like the channel. Did you write Prohibition in Atlanta?! One of my chapters was about prohibition and temperance in New Orleans and I read some of it in my research.
All good things to work towards! Sobriety has been a long, strange trip for me, but well worth it. I feel better physical, and taking better control of my health and fitness has really improved my cycling. Hoping for the best for you and the channel for 2023!
Don't feel bad about not doing a century; I didn't do my first until my 40s, so you've got time (and after that first one they get easier; I break them into 25-mile chunks & it feels less daunting). You persevered through personal challenges, you got your doctorate & a new job, and your content has definitely improved; pretty good for a year. Hope this new one brings you more of the things you need, especially peace of mind. All the best!
I am hoping for a better year in 2023 too. Love your goals and I like the style of your channel and content. I do think it has improved since I first subscribed but I thought it was always good. We all need more ease this year.
Happy New Year! Wishing you all the best in the year ahead and looking forward to more of your videos 😊 Regarding your goal surrounding sobriety, I would highly recommend the book 'Quit Like A Woman' by Holly Whitaker (she also does a great podcast called, 'Quitted'). Both have helped immensely.
First - you got the PhD, and that WASN'T on your list? Well, congrats anyway, Dr Queer Cyclist! As for sobriety - I stopped drinking in 1982, and my life has been better since. I'll be thinking of you. As for ease and joy? I don't know much about either, and I could use some more of each. (Also, you look great in that thumbnail pic.) Thanks. (I'm just back from leading my New Years Day club ride, and I'm feeling all bike-happy; this was a perfect thing to come up in my feed.)
I'd love to do a gravel or bikepacking race/event this year. I'm also in the N Georgia area (Athens), is there a good site for event listings that you'd recommend?
Oooh the only one I know of coming up is Fried Clay is in March! I know there are more but I'm not super tuned in to the race scene here. I find a lot of gravel events and rides on FB and Instagram, and through word of mouth.
definitely enjoy your content and agree-feels good to have queer representation in cycling, looking forward to more videos and feeling inspired in my own bikepacking/cycling goals
It's really sad you have to label yourself with the name queer. Why not just speak from you as a person? Why labels? Very sad. I'll pray for you to know labels are not who we are inside but what we are on the outside. Very sad.
Let’s just say that you or I were looking for cyclists that also enjoyed coffee and talking about coffee. What would be the easiest way of finding that type of channel? Searching for someone that calls their channel ‘The Cyclist’ or ‘The Coffee Loving Cyclist’?
Not all labels should be taboo, as the previous comment says, they also have practical purposes . There is no reason to patronize or feel "sad" in this specific situation.
Have a good and healthy year! Greetings from Austria, ASMR Bikepacker 👋🏼

Yes, Mary Boyle and I wrote Prohibition in Atlanta and Atlanta Beer. We are honored to know you read our book during your research. Cheers, Ron.
The main thing is joy…we need more of it. Happy new year.
My new years resolution is to ride with cool people in new places!
Heck yeah, that’s a great goal
Happy new year! Videos started great and keep getting better ✅.
Thanks, Nolan! Happy new year to you too ☺

60 miles is just short of a metric century, so that counts for a thing?

Sounds like you’re almost there to quitting alcohol completely

This comment… yikes.
