Those LED's look like high power LED's to me (@ 4:09 ), and there's 4 of them in series. But in the end you're right, for normal LED's you might need some resistors.
Of course, if you drop 6 v from a 9 v battery, these 6 v (1/3) are wasted. It's a better idea to put these LED in series and only 3, also, a small resistor is always a good idea because the internal resistance of some batteries is very low.

I would suggest maybe a 360ohm resistor for that 9 volt LED flashlight otherwise you are going to have a short life on those LEDs.
