Back when stunt drivers had to really be good at their jobs. Sloppy recirculating ball steering and suspension. Must have been fun. Would love to have had that job back then.
the steering was fine on these cars..esp any cop pkg cars had a bit closer tolerance setups. tires were key..most ppl ran junk tires..skinny, low grade all seasons..i ran 235.60.15 GoodYear Eagles* and it made a big difference. *those tires on B bods, M bods and C bods, lol. Now i've graduated to 255.60.15 Mastercraft Avengers on my '70 Fury Gran Coupe w/a 440. A bit of a rat rod condition wise..but oh, so fun. Suspension? Not sloppy, either. Don't believe everything you read. exclnt hndlng in any condiitions.. on rd, off..any weather.
They drove and made the cars look sloppy because it added dramatic viewing... Old Chrysler products had nice steering, and you wouldn't notice a real major difference from driving a new car. Especially with firm feel steering they had.Nothing sloppy about these cars steering or any other Chrysler products steering from the 60's to 80's rwd cars..even late 50's were good..Again these shows/movies made these cars look sloppy to add dramatics. It was easy to fly around a corner fish tailing and be in 100% control with one hand on the wheel..
@MikeekiM-vh5se I know, but it was more sloppy than rack and pinion today. My pop had a 75 Duster and that was the first car I ever steered.I had seven cars and three motorcycles until I went legally blind and haven't been behind the wheel in 20 years.
Whoever posted this thanks for the memories. I was surprised tat this was a Sgt. Hunter video clip. My favorite Easter egg was the recently late John Amos of the Good Times and West Wing series.
@20alphabet are you trying to be a troll trying to get someone upset or pissed them off cuz right now you're not being funny and I don't find your little joke. Funny at all I have to ask where's your mom right now because I'm going to let you know my mom has been deceased for over 20 years so please stop joking about people's moms before karma pays you a visit
Chrysler M-Bodies are great cars to play with. Their handling makes them great drift cars. The 318 is a very durable engine that can easily be tuned with a supercharger or turbocharger added.
Ditch the lean burn and smog carburetor the 318 2 barrel with 2.94 gears ran 15 flat in the 1/4...We got a 1983 Diplomat to run 13.90's with a 318,4barrel , 3.21 gears, duel exhaust and slightly ported/polished heads(camshaft was stock) We could have shaved few to several tenths off the 1/4 mile if we swapped the cam.. But, my buddy didn't want too.. We always took the lean burtn/spark control computer and smog carbs off and we gained loads of power and torque, you wouldnt believe it..Also degreee the cam, set the timing properly not the factory specs as that is for the smog junk and robs power// - Remove lean burn-spark control computer for new distributor, ecu or points ignition for major power gain again remove smog carburetor. Even thermoquad you lose power... We have done every 76-89 Chrysler-Dodge-Plymouth V8 car and 83 up trucks with this..318,360,400 and 440's and they all gained huge power..Retime them for optimum power gain you can even degree the cam for more power(look up what that is)...My Dads new 85 Fifth Avenue was a tire smoking hot rod by doing this, it gave 5.0 Mustangs a tough time on the street up to the 1/8th mile we were usually side by side lol...
@@MarkWG Good point. The Seville is also a car I could consider as well. Has to be the rear drive model made in the late 70's. I like the mid size luxury sedans.
Ahh, yaa. When the Lean Burn was working..it was fine..but..lol. I had a few lean burn cars..plan was always to swap it out for a proper Chrysler ECU & dist. plus axe the cats. fab running cars, then..esp the '77 Newport with a 400 4bbl (Thermo-Quad :) I had..bought in late 80's for $600..posh & fun & decent pwr. exclnt cars, indeed. they'd handle anything i could throw at them, or wisc crazy winters, even.
I’ve seen every episode of Hunter and even have the entire series on DVD but I don’t really remember this scene. It must be a pretty early episode because Hunter switched to a 77-78 Fury pretty early on and then drove it until the last season when I believe he got an ‘88-91 Crown Victoria.
That Torsion-Aire suspension really got a workout. The Caddy handled better than I expected, so may it's not stock? Still not the wallowly, floppy fun of an Episode of "Cannon" or "Hawaii" with their FoMoCo product placements.
They don’t do chases like this anymore. Somehow a police chase between turbo 4 cylinder crossovers just wouldn’t look as exciting…even if today's crossovers have more horsepower than those glorious old Malaise era Chryslers ever had.
Happy New Year everyone. Let's start it with a Iacocca-approved car chase that's great for so many reasons (speed isn't one of them)... 1) TWO new Fifth Ave's used in a chase. Whomever did Chrysler's Hollywood product placement from about starting with "Mad Mad World" (1962) through "Walker Texas Ranger" (2000?) deserved their paycheck. You know DeeDee McCall's Dodge Daytona was in this episode somewhere. 2) I'm mostly sure that wasn't Joe Pesci as the salesman, but hell if it doesn't feel like "Lethal Weapon" and if that isn't the Caddy from "48 Hours". 3) As an M-body owner, these cars handle very good for old-school RWD and you'll see they stay pretty buttoned-down through fast corners. Since these were new cars, you know the stunt crew was told not to wreck anything but those crappy Goodyear Arrival whitewalls. 4) *Spoiler Alert* John Amos shows up to rip-off Gil Hill's role in "Beverly Hills Cop" and chews out Fred Dryer for wrecking cars. 5) Both of the above were in the NFL, but Google tells me they never played on the same field because Amos' career ended two years before Dwyer started... Oh well, lol. Damn I miss the 80s!
the funniest part is those big caddys more than likely couldnt actually run away from those M bodies if they tried because of the wear and tear of 20 years did to their engines
Those Fifth Avenues show their police counterpart's agilities. Tough cars. Take out the weasing lean burn 318, drop in a 360 4bbl, add dual exhausts, and you'll have a quick luxury car cranking close to 200hp in a 3600 lbs car.

Probably one of the slowest chases ever. 140hp Fifth Avenues with Lean Burn chasing a ‘61 Caddy well past its prime. Perfect Malaise.
Yeah they would have had to put Crisco on all the rear tires of those gutless dogs to get them skidding/drifting like that 😂
That's some product placement from Chrysler lol.
Weaving such big sedans and drifting are quite impressive!
Mike Ehrmantraut approved this 😂
You do know a Fifth Avenue in an Aspen 4 door in a tuxedo.
TV show Hunter was sponsored by Chrysler, she drove a new Dodge Daytona..

The 1984 Chrysler 5th avenues are luxury Dodge diplomats
Right ! And the Chargers of the same year are just glorified Dodge Omni's.
Plymouth Fury

Sort of looks like Nick Nolte's car from the "48 HRS" movies.
Yep the sky blue pos..lol..
That was a 1964 model though.
I thought the same thing.
Fifth Avenue is one of my top 10 favorite cars. I wish I could go to my local Dodge dealer and buy a new one.
I'd be right behind you! I'll take mine in either smoke silver or white.
@@MarkWG Silver or Dark Blue. Cheers!
@platec4798 Either color would make me very happy. In silver, at a distance, they can be mistaken for a Seville.

Minus the Lean Burn system those old Mopars were good car's
Good heads those 302 castings... heart shaped combustion chambers long before GM had the vortec.

Wings Hauser always plays great bad guys.
Yup. He was good in "you don't hear the one that gets you" on Hardcastle and mccormick
That's a pretty good line. You a Cop, you ain't that lucky!
That guy's buying a granny car and thinks it's a chick magnet! Looks like an early appearance by Wings before he hit the B movies.
It was new... 10 years lateritd be a geizer car
Wow Hunter didn’t crash anything for once… 😅
Wings Hauser's son Cole does have his own movie career.
That's a rare scene. Hunter was driving a nice car, and he didn't wreck it.😂😂
'Is hunter really that terrible with everyone in the motorpool 😅'.

Always thought the Fifths, were pretty good lookers for a square body car. I would still like to have one for a toy.

I'm sorry, but I can't imagine driving off a Chrysler-Plymouth lot in '84 in anything but a 2.2/manual Horizon or maybe a Twin-Stick Colt.
Im literary watching this episode on tv and this pops up 😱😱😱
Can't wait for T.J. Watt to have his own TV series...

There was only supposed to be 6 bullets in that gun, although we saw it was actually empty.
