  • Here's a tutorial for Invention No. 8 in F-major, BWV 779 (ca. 1720-23) by J. S. Bach. I made a special effort to show what fingering I use. It's such a personal thing! I also demonstrate how I practice some of the passages in this piece. I hope it's helpful. 🎹🎃
    My apologies for a few brief moments where the audio and video are not perfectly in synch. I almost lost the whole file trying to cut out my stammering and my machine was not happy! We are learning.😕💻

    Thank you for this video. While most piano "teachers"say a lot how you should play, in my experience they never say how to practice in order to get there. They say a lot about techniques that you should be able to do, but never say how to acquire such technique. Showing your practice routine is very valuable,this is the first actually helpful video on piano playing I saw on TH-cam that is not just a bunch of empty advices. It's shame this video have so little views while other useless "piano practice" videos have hundreds of thousand views. This channel is indeed a gem.

      Thank you so much!!❤️❤️ I am fortunate to have had excellent teachers. I love to practice and I consider my art as close to a religious experience as I’ll ever come. I know my own personal standards and I want to share as much of the creative process as I can. Growing a channel is very hard work and I suppose that I like to think that if there are videos out there with hundreds of thousands of views, then that must mean our instrument is alive and well and that people want to play! I try to focus on that and do my own thing, as I could never make content in any other way than that which feels right to me. I am becoming more comfortable with sharing my practicing and such with folks, and hope that I can keep improving my content. Thank you again for the thoughtful words!☺️

    Very helpful information, Penny! I love your detailed descriptions. I am getting back into practicing and playing piano after a few decades, and I’m working on this very Bach Invention. I have a college degree in piano performance (1986). Your videos are wonderful and inspiring!

    Hey Penny: excellent tutorial. Thank you.
    I really like your use of coloured boxes to illustrate the motifs. Constance Keene was one of my favourite writers for a Piano Teachers periodical: I love her idea of “scraping away those fingerings.” I had never heard the term ‘fresh fingers’ but will certainly try your suggestions.
    What changed my Bach fingering the most was Claudio Arrau’s suggestion that we try all major scales with C major fingering no matter where the black keys fall: Four octaves, hands together. Very interesting exercise.

      Thank you so much! I love to come across people who knew of, or were fond of dear Ms. Keene. I adored her and we were quite close. Red was her favourite colour, so I'll give a red heart here❤. I'm glad the video was helpful. I had not heard the Arrau fingering suggestion, that would really require a lot of rotation, ha! He was a great artist!🎶

    I’m just starting piano again and find it difficult to know how to practice effectively and make the most of the time. Thank you for your extremely helpful video on practice tips and explaining the ‘how’, it’s great to see your demonstrations.

    Thanks Penny, really good and useful tutorial and reminder to really dig into a few notes at a time. You are truly helping us autodidacts. And I always love your driving , views of Canada, and other breaks away from the piano too. Plus its a reminder for me to take a break myself rather than going at it for hours on end and making the same mistake over and over. Looking forward to all your videos.

    Excellent! I find your presentation captivating and enlightening! I am a sporadic early intermediate sort of pianist who derives pleasure from scales and Bach. I do your take apart different rhythm method. But you enrich it with so much more! The Halloween dissection is adorable. And useful. The driving break was refreshing. Hope to see some Canadian autumn beauty! The hand discussion, the scraping of prescribed fingering….. really a very good video!

      Thank you so much!! 🥰I had fun making the "spooky" analysis of the main entries. 🎃 Sharing how one practices and fingers a piece is quite personal and so it does always feel a bit risky to be putting these things "out there." I am very happy to hear that it was helpful and also that you liked the driving footage. I try to make the kind of content that I would want to watch, ha! I had a chance yesterday, to get some more footage driving thru the fall foliage. It was my favourite kind of day, grey and blustery and the colours were/are at their peak.🍁❤ I found a quiet, rural road and lo and behold, a great tune from The Bob Crewe Generation came on the AM. I was in absolute glory! 😅

    Thank you Penny! I'm a teacher that is helping one of my students prepare this piece, and your explanation of fingering choices and keeping the constant movement is fantastic! Overall, I see my students build up an incredible amount of tension when they practice Bach. My student watched this video and said, "Oooooh, I get it now!" Thanks for your wise instruction and great sense of humor.

    My principal problem with this piece is the tempo. Mi teacher says that i sound arrhytmic, like without an order., and he tells me to use metronome, and now metronome and me are enemies 😆

    • @pennyplaysbach
      @pennyplaysbach  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In addition to the metronome (or perhaps in place of it, for a while) you might try counting out loud while playing at a slow to moderate tempo. I have learned to make friends with my metronome, however, I know exactly the feeling you're describing and it can be very frustrating. I still count out loud and find it to be the best way to ensure rhythmic and tempo control. Happy practicing!

    Thank U so much. I'm "self-taugt"-I play in memory of my Sister, an exquisite pianist, on Bach, Scarlatti, and Chopin and a Juillard graduate. She studied with Lev Schorr, teacher of Leon Fleischer, for over ten years in San Francisco. Maybe U culd do some Chopin videos.🥀

    • @pennyplaysbach
      @pennyplaysbach  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, Daniel! It's wonderful to hear that you are learning great music at the piano, with the memory of your sister by your side.🥰 It sounds like she was a very skilled musician! I do love Chopin's music very much, other composers, too, for that matter and, while the focus of my channel is Bach, many of the practice concepts I teach can easily be applied to other composers. My teachers in New York, were not necessarily Bach specialists, yet their wonderful advice helped me to form my own approach for playing Bach.
