She is one of the greatest female vocalist of all time. Period. Voices like hers prove god's existence to me because coincedence can't produce such power and beauty.
john manasco Your "world" sounds rather young. Nothing wrong with that; however, Aretha blazed the path for many artists of today. And not to over-look MAHALIA JACKSON, who paved the way for Aretha Franklin.
Thanks Lottie. Actually, I'm probably older than you. Find it interesting that you mention Aretha since I was a session musician in Memphis back in the day. Spooner Oldham was another session piano player in Memphis and played on Lady Soul which was done at Muscle Shoales rather than Memphis because Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records got mad at Jim Stewart of STAX Records. Most of the musicians on the session were actually Memphis guys. you know that Aretha was born in Memphis. Right. You have good taste but Anita will always be number one, in my book anyway!
Two different church sounds. One comes off like a DEEP painful cry from the soul beneath. The other come off from an angelic voice of calm and ease. Which is which should be known.
Luv, Luv, Luv Anita's version of this song...for all those who commented on not understanding what she is saying, think about how amazing it is that she can make you FEEL every note of this song...that's genius. If the lyrics were "blah, blah, and blah" this songtress could still make those notes resonate in ur soul. Its called a gift.
+Lena L. You are soooo right. There are many words in many of her songs that are beautiful & pitched high and or stretchedddd by her unique voice to make it have feeling but harder to understand. But as any true BAKER fan knows, that doesn't matter because her words go into your insides as she snags your emotions. If you just listen, then you can feel each and every meaning of the lyrics.
She is simply one of the best in the entertainment industry. She does not get enough credit. Her voice is on the top of the lists of great singers. They don’t have voices like this in the world today. These songs are classics. Anita and the others like her are the all time greatest. The rubbish they are singing now. I don’t understand any of it. I listen Anita and the other great personalities songs over and over and they really make me happy
This for me is the BEST ever rendition of this beautiful song. Sorry Aretha, Anita 'pip you to the post'. This just goes down to the pit of my stomach so much that it hurts in pure emotion. Sang it my girl. Love it to the max.
She was influenced a lot by Aretha's version though. The arrangement came from what Aretha had done right down to the backing vocal arrangement, to the way Anita interprets this song. Aretha set the blueprint for which Anita is following here in her own way but definitely influenced by the Queen of Soul.
Aretha has no rivals, Anita knows this, Aretha was singing this better right I to her 60s, her Coney Island version in 2011 was almost too much for words. Aretha owns this song, love Anita, but she like all other singers trails in Aretha's wake.
Shortly after midnight early Sunday morning...my drink is flowing and my fireplace is burning! There's nobody i'd rather listen to than Nita even if I have to be here by my damn self!
IN THAT THUMBNAIL ALONE U CAN SEE THE MASTER OF HER CRAFT AT WORK!!! AWE INSPIRING! "WE DON'T MIND THE RAIN. WE DON'T MIND THE COLD. THERE'S HEAT COMING FROM THE HEARTS TONIGHT." 😃😄 #SALUTE 💯💯💯💯
I COME BACK HERE OFTEN! 😄TODAY IN PARTICULAR BECAUSE OF THE CITING OF A QUOTE FROM NELSON MANDELA IN QUEEN MOTHER JOYCE MEYER'S BOOK "DO IT AFRAID" 💯 #SALUTE QUEEN ANITA BAKER AND QUEEN MOTHER WINNIE MANDELA!
I always said that nobody could ever top Aretha's versions but then Anita came down the back straight and she kept coming and coming and more power and the winner was Ms A :) :) :)
You have always appreciated your fan base. I thank God for gift of singing. "The Lord hath made everything beautiful in His time." Your voice is heaven sent. This is a beautiful version. May God continue to bless you and keep you in His tender care.
Beautiful Anita Baker .We use to go to her concert at the Pavillon,Concord when she use to come.We use to sit on the lawn and picknik, and listen to her.I have a T'Shirt I always kept signed by Anita.
I clearly remember that this was the first time i heard Bridge over troubled waters. I watched it on NTA Channel 5,Lagos, Nigeria. This was way before we had cable tv in Nigeria
Thank you Anita for singing this song when South Africa was going through trying times. Your angelic freed Nelson Mandela. I was five years old when you performed this song and I'm now a 26 year old South African who is forever indebted to you and all parties concerned for paying tribute to my HERO! Proudly South African!
@@jdfodio then why would you have MANY!? of her albums??? I would say by your negative comment that you should had spent money on other singers??, if I go to a restaurant and don't like it, I just don't go back.....if I eat something I don't like, I don't eat it again....making sense??
This is a very soulful and emotional version Anita does here she truly is awesome! I also love the arrangements of the song here and the smooth sax from Everette Harp in this song that builds and builds!
LOVE ANITA BAKER, I've met her several times, BEAUTIFUL in person and real! she is singing the Simon & Garfunkel song with some of the Aretha Franklin arrangement ( Don't Trouble The Waters, Still Waters Run Deep, yes they do!)
efg5000 OK !! The Truth Spoken!! And Without ARETHA 's Arrangement, which not only was borrowed by ANITA Baker, but was COPIED and USED by her back-up singers, this performance would not have had NEARLY the same impact.
Really? Multiple Grammy awards, best selling albums, sold out concerts in minutes and many lifetime achievement awards, all as she only released few albums, she has a cult following and icon status in industry. Think she wasn’t focused on other outside her music and in interviews has talked about appreciation for taking time off to raise her children. Think most would name her in tops list
Thanks Dave Murphy for the video, The songstress of soul was my only comfort after my second relationship ended. It was only the second time knowing the pains of the heart. However, the first time I experienced it, at least I was home and had my siblings and parents around me. The second time I was stationed overseas -4000 miles ftom friends and family. The Songstress of soul was there for me the entire 9 months that I was there. In her songs,I sometimes sense that she has felt incredible hurt herself. I hope that isn't true, and I also hope that she knows the relief and direction (guidance) that she has brought to so many of us through her heart felt music and lyrics. Lov U Mrs BAKER-always. Go-Detroit! Our hometown.
Aretha has my Soul; Anita, both my Heart and Soul. The former is a smooth mistress at falsetto; the latter has natural power and range a la Gladys Knight. Passion, Emotion, Empathy, Pathos and yes, SOUL... The saxist sounds like Everette Harp, underrated tenor and alto virtuosic saxophonist. The Choir with the Band is piously super. Shout-out to the Duke of George (-ville) {RIP.} for keys and arrangements
