Will virtualizing unRAID be the solution I'm looking for?

    Good video, gave me an idea to migrate my unraid installation on a itx supermicro system to a DL380 G8 that i managed to takeover for free.

    love the idea the question is, how can migrate all my stuff from unraid to a virtual unraid? basically how can i move all my crap :( 40TB, i got my unraid on a flash and i can boot exsi on a flash drive too to boot but do you need to migrate all your stuff from the old to the new one or simply start exsi install unraid and assign the disk like the old one nathe they files will be there? i guess my confusion is because exsi is virtualiztion at hadware level

    this probably wont help but when i was testing gaming on a vm in unraid i had stuttering in scrolling. The only thing that fixed it was passing through an entire disk as the boot disk. No amount of pinning, cache drives etc or xml tweaks would work. Once the entire disk was passed through it was snappy and the stuttering was mostly gone. Probably wont help your case but thought id mention it. Good video bro

    If you want to back up your VM's for free, you can use Active Backup for Business on your Xpenology VM. It will do ESXi free using root credentials. Also, not sure if you used thin or thick provisioning for your Windows 10 VM, thick will give you better performance.

      Hey akurenda1985, thanks for the tip. I will look into that. At the moment the shares I have on unRAID are also shared in DSM. Works pretty great. I'll have to see where I want to store the most important VM images.

    For better performance try: 1 socket and various cores for the virtualized machine and for storage: viostor and select write back

      Hey Vintage Tech Repairs, thanks for watching. Well If you want to pass through a controller like I did, make sure it's supported by ESXi, after that you can pass it through to one VM. I used the onboard softraid controller for the datastores within ESXi

    Always nice to see you upload videos :D currently I only do own one server and want to experiment with running a gaming vm within unraid. Unraid is mainly used for dockers and data. When virtualizing Unraid is it possible to use the current usb, so that the only change for me is going from bare metal to virtualizing it? I want to use the gaming vm in combination with something like Rainway to use it as a cloud gaming solution when not at home.

    • @b00bytrap
      @b00bytrap  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey BananaboxTech, thanks for watching. When I started with unRAID I also wanted to use it for a "cloud" gaming VM. I did several videos about it and it was in a way working pretty good for casual gaming. Back then I used Nvdia game streaming in combination with Moonlight. Sometimes Steam streaming.
      I don't recommend virtualizing unRAID for this purpose. You'll want as few layers as possible in this case.

    Virtualization is virtualization regardless of where or how. The important thing is your perceptions and for that, you need to do the thing but please don't feel like ESXi is faster or slower than any other Hypervisor. I too have tested many hypervisors and they all run about as fast as every other. I have run Hypervisors inside VMs and they run as fast as the host Hypervisor and that was KVM. I would be more concerned about RAM and Storage. For me, UnRaid is the best. I was rather disappointed in the highly vaunted Proxmox that seemed under featured when compared with KVM in Unraid. Keep making vids. Kudos on the effort.

      I think IT has to do with Numa-node, cpu cores / vcores setting per host and guest system

      @@RayHorn5128088056 oh IT does when using virtualisation. Normally IT would go automatic, but if the hypervisor for some reason doesn't automatically detect the cpu lay-out, you may run into performance issues

      @@RayHorn5128088056 even Then, IT still does matter. Because, how Will the host be operable when passingthrough a cpu to the guest?

    I did this exact thing. It made everything so much easier. My dockers work 10x better. My vms run directly in esxi and work 10x better. And I get 10gb which I could not get working in unraid at all.

    I just realized that my unraid have the same probelm (even worse) to run VMs
    But jump out the same idea as you ESX+virtual unraid...
    This is what i am seeking...thx

    Mhhh..
    I can't wrap my head around those Windows VM problems.
    My System has: 2 E5-2630L CPUs really low Clocked but I don't have any problem with it.
    There is no sluggishness or perceived "slowness". Its just the bootup that takes a little longer, compared to my Workstation.
    Its all on solid state, tho.

    • @defiled3s
      @defiled3s 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      From the top of my head, one question, how did you configure the CPU to be used for that Windows VM?

      @b00bytrap  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey cYRoN, thanks for watching and sharing your virtualization experience. I'm also not sure if it's the core clock of the CPUs but I've tested a lot of configurations lately and pretty much this is the only thing that I can think of at this point. I'm also running the VMs of an SSD. I will continue to tinker with this setup :)

      @@b00bytrap What about the virtualization mode of the CPUs? There seem to be differences there. Most of them seem to be more or less for compatibility reasons.
      Gotta try this on a different machine with more Horsepower to be certain. :)
