I know this wasn’t a piece from overtime, but I have to comment on Bill’s bit on obesity. I’m a pediatrician and I’ve read the new guidelines. Either Bill hasn’t read them or only chose to comment on the hot button issues that made him feel he could score some points. Nearly everything there is about lifestyle change, specifically aggressive diet change. This might have instead been a great opportunity to discuss why our children have been exposed to so much unhealthy food. The exposures to sugary, processed foods starts in infancy, so their hooked early. We directly market this cheap crap to children and desperate parents and then keep shoveling it to them in school. Why not have a conversation about how to make healthy food more affordable and the junk less accessible rather than argue whether this is a genetic problem?

And that does not even touch upon food deserts.

I watched him go from a vibrant man to someone on oxygen 24/7. So weak he just shriveled down to nothing--and he was a thin man to begin with. So you can see this is a topic very close to my heart. The USA is listed as a “flawed democracy” under the Democracy Index because of 1) the electoral college 2) plurality voting 3) the Senate 4) allowing state politicians of the majority party to draw district lines, instead of an independent commission 5) money in politics (aka, legalized corruption), Citizens United, lobbyists, etc.
Since these things have a near zero chance of changing, we will continue to suffer the consequences (like Trump, etc).

The US had a full democracy rating every year until Trump was elected. And even when Trump was in office it was only just under being a full democracy by a fraction. It dropped in 2021 probably because of the Capital riot, but to imply that the US has a bad democracy because of its place on the index is silly. Many countries seem to switch between full democracy and flawed. All of whom are pretty great countries for democracy. Plus rn the highest ranked countries are Norway and New Zealand. Im from NZ and I don't think our system is all that great. It is better than the US sure, but it isn't true democracy. We rely heavily on representatives just like the US and they often just vote on their own whims and not on the opinions of the people.

The electoral college never goes against the will of the people anymore. If they were going to, It would have been when Trump was elected.
Yeah people are worried about letting idiots vote. That is what the founding fathers feared and that is what Socrates feared too. It is demagoguery that is the problem, not educated democracy. How we choose to try stop demagoguery is the real question.

Tim Ryan talking about cops under stress because they're only making $14 / hr to do a stressful job. Well Tim, if you think that's stressful, try just living while black. . . Plus if the $14 an hour isn't enough, then they're free to go somewhere else and work for more money, black people can't decide to change their color, in order to be safe walking the streets.
Yes, being a police officer is a stressful job that requires a certain personality to do the job well, and those guys should be respected and paid well. The comments on the Bill's HBO-sponsored blog have been disabled for so long I can't remember when, and there doesn't seem to be any other channel. I think it would be a question for Bret Stephens, but there doesn't seem to be anyone really on target for this topic this week:
There is a big scandal "trending" about contaminated sushi. My theory is TikTok is driving it, and I think the Chinese can control what trends on Tiktok. Is this anti-sushi thing actually a politically motivated attack on Japan?
Maybe not even China's idea? Maybe Putin asked his buddy for the help?
By the way, it would be funny if the show mentioned the long-distance robbery scandal unfolding now between Japan and the Philippines. The gang apparently started as a kind of criminal telephone help desk based in the Philippines, but robbing people in Japan over the phone. Then they branched into robbery, recruiting the robbers still living in Japan via social media. The funny part was that the leaders of the gang were apparently operating the business from inside their detention center in Manila. "You can't arrest me because I'm already in jail!" The ultimate in chutzpah?

That's 35 minutes already taken up for an hour show. To be able to discuss these very nuanced and complicated subjects requires long explanations especially if those on the panel disagree. He was one of many producers. Hollywood often names the top actors as producers, especially if they have put up some of their own money, to make the film, which Baldwin did do. That doesn't make him responsible for casting and hiring. And none of the other producers are charged. Why not, if being a producer makes one liable?

  • @adamchurvis1
    @adamchurvis1 ปีที่แล้ว +139

Movie prop guns often have modified actions for various special effects.
One popular example of this is the series The Rifleman starring Chuck Connors. They made three of those carbines, each one a little different as they refined it. The action was modified to automatically trip the trigger via a set-screw custom built into the action lever.
Similarly, single-action revolvers (virtually all revolvers used during the 1880's, the era during which "Rust" takes place, were single-action) used in scenes where the actor or stuntman is "fanning" the hammer while the trigger is pulled will have the trigger sear completely machined off and smoothed over so the nervous actor doesn't ruin a $50,000 shot by forgetting to keep the trigger pulled while he fans the hammer at hip level. That happened a lot before they made revolvers purpose-built for fanning.
If Alec Baldwin was handed one of these guns, pulling back the hammer and then releasing it -- which would normally just rotate the cylinder and engage the trigger sear to hold back the hammer until the trigger was pulled -- would just let the hammer fall home and its firing pin would strike the primer, thereby firing the cartridge.
That's how things worked until the 1960s, when better firearms engineers designed revolvers to use what is sometimes called a "Transfer Bar" or a "Safety Bar" which sits between the hammer and the firing pin. In these models the firing pin is no longer connected to the hammer but rather sits inside the frame itself. The Transfer Bar is connected to the trigger, so that when it is pulled, the Transfer Bar rises to come between the hammer and the firing pin. The only way to hit the firing pin and thereby fire the cartridge is for the trigger to be pulled all the way back when the hammer falls. This also prevents accidental discharges from dropping and mishandling.
Obviously these Transfer Bars do not exist on the 1880s revolvers used to build these "fanning" prop guns, and so any time the hammer falls home, the firing pin is struck and, in turn, strikes the primer in the cartridge and fires the cartridge.
    I hope this helps.
