- Is a button lock a switchblade? Not only does protech make awesome autos, they make super fun button lock fidgeters. In this video I pit two Made in USA protechs against one another- The Malibu vs the Ferrum Forge Designed Mordax. The Malibu is an extremely popular button lock, and the Ferrum forge is perhaps a bit less well known in Protechs lineup. These were loaned to me by Matt from Foolish Pride Leather, who bakes amazing wallets, knife slips, and leather beer coozies.

The Mordax is a knife that only shows up in a retailer when I don't have the funds for a new knife. So next time you see one think of me, I'm probably broke that day (usually because I've just bought other knives).
Since I recorded the voiceover I have seen mordaxs were just run again and about to show up at retailers in the coming weeks. So you must be about to be broke

I have both. The action is equal and excellent on both. The Mordax is more of a get shit done knife and the Malibu is a bit more of a gentlemen size knife. I prefer the Mordax by a long shot.
At this point, I'm convinced anything named "Malibu" is just the marketing department trying make their product sound more upscale than it really is.
Case in point, Barbie Malibu Dreamhouse.
Love the button lock comparison! I’ve got a WE Mini Malice button lock and gotta say it’s pretty nice with the contoured handles, and smaller overall size if you wanted a smaller knife to carry

Recently got a mordax took forever to get one and lots of persistence. I like it, fun knife

If you want a knife in this style that isn't quite as expensive as these two, check out the KnifeCenter exclusive version of the Civivi Conspirator. Black aluminum handle, button lock, S35VN steel, one of the best lockups I've ever seen on a folder, and a wicked blade shape. Even when you spring for the titanium clip from Civivi it's less than half the cost of a Malibu. No matter how much I spend on this stuff, I keep coming back to it. For the price it feels like I stole it from them.

I have to push the button on my fancy Malibu very hard to get it to press and release. Good because it’s locked up but kinda weird because it’s actions are so smooth.
Weird like Gonzo the Great and his love for chickens. Oh and my cool hanky is for cleaning my glasses and bonus, it silences keys in pocket.

I found the honeycomb scaled Mordax in Magnacut at a mom & pop shop last weekend. I can’t put the damned thing down. It’s such a step up from the Benchmade EDC I was carrying before. I handled the Malibu as well, but the action didn’t seem as nice and the Mordax blade profile is what I imagine when I think about dream knives.
I love my M390 Malibu, I’m still on the hunt for a Mordax. I REALLY want the Mordax as it reminds me a lot of one of the greatest folding knives ever - the Kershaw Skyline.

Does the Civivi Elementum have a good button lock? Scored a Spyderco Leafjumper. It's my new favorite knife. It lacks jimping. Weird, but I dig it.

Dandy knives but come on man, as you well know, the only way to test a top dollar button lock is to baton it through a large oak burl. Or Joe X it through an engine block while doing the splits or whatever. That next reviewer will understand.
They’re essentially the same knife but with different ergonomics (shapes)

Nice knives..but and this might be me but are we not becoming a little obsessed with how knives open? And I am sick of looking at the Spyder paramilitary 2... sick of it. You love it...to me bit boring.
I mean think about blade steel. Who gives two shits… the only people ever getting use out of them are the TH-camrs and knife testers for internet points. Knives are a silly hobby, and it’s all taken way too seriously. For me, a fun lock is a good thing… way more useful to me that how many more cuts a knife gets out of maganacut over M390. Enjoy your knives and sharpen them when they get dull.

Yea protech are nice but they scratch like a bit*h. Those scales always scratch and look like spit. $300 knife
