- Gamma World is a post-apocalyptic science fantasy role-playing game in which player characters explore Earth centuries after the collapse of civilization, searching for artifacts from the time before "The Great Upheaval". The game was originally designed by James M. Ward and Gary Jaquet, and first published by TSR in 1978. It borrows heavily from Ward's earlier role-playing game, Metamorphosis Alpha.
16 minutes of some dude reminiscing about a game I've never heard of and good times spent with his mates.
Stuff like this is so relatable.👍
Love this game. Super fun!!!!
A few years before my time. I started playing RPGs in 1986 with the D&D Basic Set BUT I do recall seeing Gamma World (the third edition boxed set) at a shop and the cover art was enthrawlling to me. I still game! I played two sessions of my homebrew Basic/Expert D&D this past summer. I enjoyed hearing your reminiscenes!
I used to play that back in the early 80s. Haven't seen a copy of that in a very long time.
It wasn’t perfect but Gamma World is still my favorite tabletop RPG. It would be great if WoTC brought it back with a new edition.
Nice. This one would be considered a simplistic one today. Quite easy to analyze and min-max everything you need.
All your stats were rolled in order, plus number of mutations if any (and some were bad). No real level advancement - it was all about acquiring tech
In 1st edition Gamma World, you’re pretty much at the mercy of the dice for everything-your stats get rolled in strict order, your mutations are handed out randomly, and whatever junk you scrounge up is all you’ve got. That leaves zero wiggle room for designing a “perfect” character. Even if you did want to crunch numbers, the game’s built-in chaos won’t let you plan things out too carefully. Instead, you end up figuring out how to make the most of whatever off-the-wall traits and gear you wind up with. It’s about rolling with whatever weirdness comes your way, not squeezing every last advantage out of a meticulously balanced build.
ew, why would you say such terrible things? min/max? gross! grow up you silly lil thang
That is a copy of the first edition of Gamma World.
