    The Incredible Crash Dummies phenonenon in the 90's was amazing.
    It started out as a series of public service PSA's with two talking crash test dummies reminding people to wear their seatbelts. Apparently the characters resonated with the public because they spun it off into a series of really awesome destructible toy sets and videogames.
    I remember really being into them when I was a kid, something about the slightly abstract non-human character designs made them a perfect tabula rasa for me. I was way into them.
    Now I need to go find them on eBay.

    My sister used to collect these. The guy at our local toy shop used to slice open the bags, file them under which figure they were and then tape them back up.

    The Incredible Crash Test Dummies were based on a series of safe driving PSAs that were shown on American television back in the late 80's. Apparently they were popular enough to inspire a toy line and cartoon.

    Actually kinda surprised you've never covered the Crash test Dummies toys. They stuck around for a lot longer than you'd think and were kinda cool. Although I do think they had the effect of making horrific car accidents come across as being awesome.

  • @BlazeDeval

  • @stoffhimel

    the incredible crash test dummies were based off a very popular PSA. If i recall correctly, it was telling people to wear their seat belts.

    • @CommodoreFan64
      @CommodoreFan64 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yep then kids latched onto the commercials as they played during the afternoon hours when cartoons where on, so then followed all the cool toys, shitty video games, and then the cartoon which was meh.

    • @SergeiMosin
      @SergeiMosin 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah... I remember they had a truly bizarre saturday morning cartoon show that was based off the PSAs as well. As I recall, it took a truly bizarre concept (sentient crash test dummies) and managed to somehow make it into an impossibly bland TMNT style super... hero... thing.
      The fact that I can't even recall anything beyond the fact that it existed and had moderately fun action figures should hint at the quality of that show...

    • @KaltatheNobleMind
      @KaltatheNobleMind 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      vince and larry:D think the tagline to the PSA's were "dont be a dummy buckle your saftey belt" and it was about the dummies doing their day job either lamenting how they do it because people dont buckle up or soemthing but one of the guys ws voiced by garfield and the other maybe ray romano.
      i think they ran the toylinefrom 1991 to i believe 1997 where they were just generic crash dummies with soem fun destructive action features to then superheroes who faught the Junkman, and even had a TV show in the works. then they were racers for some reason.
      anyway they came back in 2003 after mattel baught tyco and used them for their hotwheels line and had a TV show more in lighn with the orignal PSA's with skits about car safetey. think they lasted till 2008 or so.
      sure hope they coem back again. they were fun toys XD

    • @KaltatheNobleMind
      @KaltatheNobleMind 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      i also remeber a movie in the works being directed by the gy who did babe pig in the city. had a website with concept art and i believe an actress in dummy makeup but it has mysteriously gone. doenst even show up on google:(
      was incredible crash dummies: jounry to the never never.

      The toys were indeed cool, I had the car way back when. I recall the front end would crumple in a fairly convincing manner and there was a spring loaded feature that would flip the roof off and catapult the figures through the windshield.

      wilfordbrimleyful We used to dream of seeing the mill owner! We used to wake up to a load of rotten fish being dumped all over us, and maybe, just maybe, we'd find a stray 1x1 piece in there!

    • @wilfordbrimleyful
      @wilfordbrimleyful 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Rotten fish? you toff! Every morning at four, the sewer pipe where we slept was doused in sewage and filth, waking us for our morning work cleaning the dangerous milling machinery after a five-mile trudge in our sandals made out of bits of old tire and baling twine. And maybe if we were lucky, we'd see into the cars passing by and spy a more fortunate child playing with a Lego Star Wars tie fighter.

    The ninja was made with the same parts as the generIc ninjas from the Castle sub-series (called Ninja I believe) that came out in the early or mid nineties; I had a ton of them in gray and a few in red or black. The scuba diver was made with the same generic pieces as the scuba divers of various sets of the time period too; it was the norm to just attach a non-standard visor to a motorcycle helmet (the snorkel, a bigger gold visor for astronauts, and so on). And of course, there were Robin Hood look-alikes going back into the eighties, also part of the Castle series.

    Ashens, you mentioned some crash test dummy action figures, and I distinctly remember those being sold in about 2004, and I had a ton of them, and they were really cool. Though, the cars you put them in were a pain in the ass, because once you crashed them, you had to spend about five minutes finding all the pieces and putting them back on, only to have to repeat the process five seconds later because you crashed it again.

  • @SetchDreskar
    @SetchDreskar 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    The crash test dummies toys were amazing, there heads weren't the only thing that came off, they would eject all their limbs and head on impact (Though this also meant losing bits was easy) and they were rather amazingly put together toys, very sturdy since the point was they were supposed to be smashed together. The cars were by far the best part of the toys, ramming into something to smash the car up and send the crash test dummy flying through the windshield~ Ah nostalgia~

    The reason the chicken has a peg in the back was because there was a full roast chicken piece it would clip into. I distinctly remember it being part of a banquet set in LEGO Castle.

    Nacho Libre was actually really funny, it didn't take itself too seriously, but it nailed it with the humor. The slapstick wasn't overly corny.

    Oddly if I recall the older style scuba masks/space-ish masks were designed in such a way that the helmet matched with the airtanks and fit on all proper-like. I always found it strange that they changed it.

    The crash test dummy was probably included due to a popular semi-comedic series of buckle up driving safety commercials, here in the U.S.. Think the Crash Test Dummies even had a cartoon but, the series wasn't long lived.
