  • PFAA board members Brent Fikowski and Pat Vellner join Sean and Tommy to talk about the recent demands from the PFAA that were released following the conclusion of the CrossFit Games. They discuss why they feel Dave Castro needs to be removed from his position on the sport team, why they chose to release their demands prior to the conclusion of the investigation into Lazar Djukic's death and where they and the sport may go from here.

I'm completely in agreement with you. I hope the sponsors continue... If the sponsors offer enough prizes, athletes will prioritize the events that pay the most. For example, Red Bull can pay up to 5 million for a first prize, 2 million for a second, and 3 million for the teams in first place. If you add in the other sponsors, you could create a league with a ranking system like in tennis, and a ranking that determines, based on the points from the Grand Slams, who is the fittest.

In fact, I thought the games were fantastic when Bozman stepped in, and they’re still exciting. Looking at other competitions, it’s clear that there are plenty of capable individuals who can take over event planning. That said, I believe PFAA is a positive step forward for the game, and I wish them all the best!

I only have one comment related to Brent/Pat' statement about bogging down every meeting with safety: Every construction project I have worked on starts weekly progress meetings with a safety discussion. Yes, there are suppositions of competence, but the prevailing protocol is 'trust, but verify.' Especially given the situation of Lazar - starting every meeting with the supposition that there is competence coupled directly with a check in on safety protocols is - from my perspective, - likely the best route.

There seems to be a lot of questions around what CrossFit is doing, which is justified, but no real questions to clarify what PFAA is doing. Also lots of words describing what CrossFit is - “lacking professionalism” , “not trustworthy” , “not transparent” but a lot of these words seem to be good descriptors of the PFAA.
This was a good damage control interview after Coffee Pods and Wods. I find it hard to believe that Brent didn’t read or fully know what was in the NDA he signed as he went to business school and worked as a controller until 2018. In what world, would CrossFit not allow you to talk about whether you’re having meetings with them - make it make sense. Also, Pat, to joke that CrossFit left you out of that meeting…
I think PFAA needs to take their own advice and start being transparent with facts instead throwing out buzzwords.

  • @paulwalters7984
    @paulwalters7984 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

I think that there is a more serious consideration that is constantly being missed in these videos …. and that is the likelihood of criminal charges being brought to executives within CrossFit. Everyone is focussed on Dave getting sacked and whether that is likely or not given the demands of the PFAA… however I believe there is a more serious situation here….i.e… regardless of an athlete signing a waiver to take on responsibility for, and to not hold CrossFit liable for their own injury or even death, waivers such as this do not remove liability from the competition organisers for ‘reckless negligence’ or ‘reckless endangerment’. If charged and found guilty of either, you could see an individual or individuals do jail time. There is numerous case law and precedent for this. No one appears to be giving this any consideration and they are only focussed on whether someone is going to get sacked and whether that is appropriate….! I find this bizarre!

It is clear that the lack of leadership that Castro has demonstrated has shown that he doesn’t deserve the opportunity to have the position that he does. It is that simple. All organizations and teams and sporting organizations have performance reviews and in this case he has failed. The athletes have spoken. In addition to his poor leadership and lack of communication, he clearly doesn’t understand programming. The loss of one of their athletes in Lazar is a clear and present display of his ignorance and lack of duty of care. In the strength and conditioning and personal training industries if you do not demonstrate duty of care you are instantly liable. It doesn’t matter what waiver you sign. The program and the environment that day is an easy example of how duty of care was not demonstrated.

Are there surveys sent out to athletes on the Olympics and each of their events that they participate in? I think this needs to be rehired by the PFAAA, otherwise you are bound to run in dialogue circles. At the end of the day, you need a leader to make a decision based on feedback, but whereby the sport also continues to evolve and move forward. I wonder what the PFAA’a views on evolution of the sport are. I’d love to hear those. Yes things can evolve while also being safe. Do feedback conversation need to happen with every event? Is it the PFAA’s job to do this? Ultimately, event leaders need to make decision, and just like Patrick said, hindsight is always 20/20 and it’s never possible to anticipate every single possible situation.

I always thought the swimming events were very wrong, even if you were just doing laps in 3' of water. A lot of athletes do not have to body composition to swim well, period, it has nothing to do with fitness. This is something that can never change even with years of training. As a Marine, I have huge respect and love for Seals, but this is not BUDS or anything else, this is supposed to be a test of fitness, nothing else. David Castro has worked his butt off for years putting all of this together, but it seems the focus has shifted to more niche events. Criss cross jumprope, parallel bar handstand walks? Again, not fitness. Yes I know there's balance and accuracy, but fundamentally it is constantly varied, high intensity, functional movements that's intended to help people through everyday life. When do people walk on their hands? C'mon, just stop

In a study performed in 1990, researchers found that military leaders scored 20% lower on "resolving" (the tendency to negotiate instead of dictate) than their civilian peers. Dissent from the ranks is not tolerated in the military. It should come as no surprise that Dave has never admitted fault in any of the programming, even in the many scenarios in which there were considerable errors in the approach to safety.

It is interesting how people are reacting to this topic. Pat and Brent clearly have an axe to grind with Dave. They are also claiming to represent the athletes which is factually incorrect (see Panchik and DiCicco's response). They are also focusing on one event the CF games when it suits their arguments for the PFAA. There are other events where athletes can earn dollars. If they do not like the CF events, don't compete to send your message. I suspect they would quickly see many other athletes step up. If they were both really serious about this, they and the board members would not compete in events the PFAA is involved in. It is a massive conflict of interest. (Completely violates the unknown and unknowable)
I would personally welcome a standard for competing in the CF games: All athletes must belong to an affiliate for a minimum of 6 months and they must have their L1 as a minimum.

I have one question: Did the PFAA ask crossfit for the overall safety plan as well as event specific safety plan? If so, why not share it with the public?
If you don't have an email requesting the information from HQ. Then you are not that serious about your message! Raising concerns and then doing the event means nothing. Having a lawyer who represents PFAA requesting information makes way more headway.
Complaining about how the past was is your own fault. There was a time Dave was not in charge. Why didn't you make a move then instead of sitting on your hands.
I believe the sport could excel from an athlete association. But you guys are all over the place. Nobody cares about your demands.

Sport and methodology are to very different things now the same thing happened in mma back in the day you could have a family a 9-5 job train before or after work and stand a chance at winning and becoming the champ but that changed as the sport became more professional and CF is going through that now.

@@Craig-pk5cc the difference with MMA and CrossFit is so broad though. MMA is a mixture of disciplines and backgrounds into a competitive scene. Not a standard methodology with a shared name. I enjoy and love the games but it’s no longer the CF games and more of mostly specialized camps and individuals working out just for competition that has no bearing or relation on the methodology.

From what I get gather is that at the end of every competition or competition stage the PFAA send out a survey that they then keep to themselves instead of compiling the relevant safety concerns and sending them via email to CrossFit or any other event organiser, plus CC in PFAA members to show the work they are doing. If they had been doing this for the last 4 years they would have either evidence where they had suggested/or improved safety and evidence where organisers don't listen and/or neglected to improve safety.
