Years later, as a proud owner of pairs of Technics 1200 mk2, Stanton Str8-100 and Str8-150's I agree with not liking the scratch purpose Start Stop on the corner so I just see it as a spare part, and the dark blue has me want to plasti-dip. Overall, it is an unstoppable tank for what on earth is out there for 1000s more cost so I will pardon all my minor gripes on that topic, however I enjoy them all equally as at the end of the day they all do what I need and that is to spin my vinyl collection.
i've had my technics sl-1200's since 1987 and they are still going strong and work like new to this very day... ohh and they have never been serviced... technics for the win......
Let me help you,...the ST-150's (not the STR8's they have straight tone arms yours do not)...anyway the reason they have two start/stop buttons is for turntablists,...some prefer to have standard formation either side of the mixer, others prefer battle formation where they have the decks sideways, and others prefer to have them in the classic L formation where the left table is sideways and the right is not. Having 2 start/stop buttons ensures that however you have your tables in formation either side of the mixer there is always a start/stop button close to the mixer,...making it easier to stop the platter at any time. The benefits of having 2 start/stop buttons is a feature often desired by real DJ's.
Just wanted to add, I have been using a pair of Str8 for home use, for over a year now, and have had no problems at all. I say this because there are concerns of durability. I will say that if you care for your equipment, then these decks will definitely last.
I dig the 1200's and the ST150's. I've been a Stanton DJ for the past 10 years and I spun on a set of 12's that were my homies. They were awesome. Then he came over to my studio and got down on the ST150's. He had a blast as well. Really you got a solid turntable with both. At this point in the game, it's all personal preference. I can't knock what anyone likes personally, besides it's all about what you can do with what you got. Not just having an "Industry Standard" because you were told you should have it. I personally like the ST150's. I dig the color, construction and the feel. Plus I incorporated the Novation Dicers over the Left Start/Stop Button. But that's personal choice.Technics do have historical and longevity value added to them and plus every major DJ will back them, I'll give you that. However, good luck finding someone who will part with them, or you'll pay a fortune to get a set refurbished. I've had my ST150's for about 3 years now and my T80's for 10 years. The problems I've had are things I caused. Only issue I got with the 150's is that their heavy as hell... But that's fine. These are my studio set and aren't going anywhere.
Cool, I been noticing that the AT LP -1240 tables look amazing and some people prefer them compared to a Technics 1200. You should do a video because for the price they are a steal they cost about $350 I guess they are so popular they went down in price I better get some.
I've had my Technics SL1200MK2's for 30 years now, i dont see any of these newer turtables still working in 30 years time, some of them won't even be working in 10 years time guaranteed. If you want a pair of turntables that will outlive you then look no further than the Technics Sl1200 range.
Any turntable will work after 30 years if taken care of properly. I still have an old gemini xl 500 from the 90s that works the same as when I got it. Properly care for your gear and it will last a long time. Simple as that. No turntable will break just sitting around and playing vinyl on it. If you take your turntables on the road with you and throw your cases around, I don't care what you're using, they will not last long.
yes that's wright...long ago I talked a Dj...he throwed accidentally some beer and cola on his Technics MK2 turntables (multiple times) and they still played without any problem...
I love my Statons. I prefer them to Technics because of the pitch fader, it's so smooth and accurate on the Stanton! I'm one of those people who didn't want to spend a lot of money on old, used Technics. I could not find a good deal on craigslist, and I already trusted Stanton because my good friend already had 150s, so I was able to test them out first. Yeah, they're really heavy, but I live with it. I bought a small office dolly to help me haul them on mobile gigs. Another criticism is that they placed buttons in areas where you're prone to press by accident. However, once you get used to using them it is no longer a problem. By the way, the straight tone arm will NOT skip.
Your 1200's brake needs adjustment. You have to pull the platter, remove the plastic vent and adjust the brake. You don't have to do that with Stantons or most Super OEM decks.
Good review Bru.I want some techs , but I found 2 for 315 tried to negotiate for 250 , he was like no way . After watching your video I’m gone go ahead and cop em!
had gems in the mid 90s then got pdx2000mk1 on launch then sold teks and I still use those same pdx2000 to this day solid and just stick to vinyl like glue, but the teks did feel feel more prestigious but if you slap a metal top on any deck it will feel heavier duty.
Um It says in the instructions. Unnecessary removing the platter may cause damage to the magnet mounting structure, the motor, or the platter resulting in undesired performance. The turntable should ALWAYS be powered off before the turntable platter is removed.
Thanks man and to your bro for letting you use the str-150 . This help alot I really needed a nother DJs opinion about them. Keep up the videos really helpful bro. Thanks man
I have a pair of Stanton t120, same as st150 without key lock, and the reverse, start and stop adjust are located in different positions. Other than that, they're the same as the st150 specs with straight tone arm. I've had a couple sets of Technics, and I have to say that the Stantons are a definite improvement. The torque is dramatically higher than 1200's, and they fill in some of the shortcomings I've always felt 1200's had. Technics have their fan boys, and they have a well earned reputation, but they were never perfect, just the best available for a long time. Since their patent on their motor design expired, others like Stanton have been able to improve on that motor design and construct their turntables to be specifically geared towards DJ and doing cuts, etc. If you can get a good price on one of the high-end Stanton models, don't think you're missing out by not having 1200's. You'll really hate the drop in torque if you had the Stantons from the start.
@DjKnyfeStryke I think that’s what he means. The Stanton’s are leagues ahead of the Technics, but he has another version of the Stanton’s... the T120, and he’s saying they’re just as good as the 150’s. Peace ✌️
The reason that the Stanton has a separate power switch is so that you can power down the platter without killing the signal, as is the case with the Reloop 8000s
Thanks! Going to add an ST-150 to my setup with a 1200, Pioneer Nexus 2000s/900 mixer and MPC Live. Glad I found this video in 2021. haha. Also, you said, "At the end of the day, it's not what they looks like, but what it can do, right?" #poetry. Be well!
If you are looking for new turntables you have yo weigh your options. I chose to buy 2 new STR8.150s for $900 vs spending $1800 for 2 used/refurbished 1200s. I personally like the 150s over the 1200s. The things you didn't like I love. I did have an old pair of 1200s I replaced with the 150s.
40lbs is not a negative, this weight is there on purpose, you will not get jump on your vinyl when you accidently bump the table, the 2 x start and stops are for different positions of the turntables. I see these as improved Technics.
haven't finished the video yet but just wanted to make a few comments.. on the 1200 if you press the start/stop button too fast then it'll break slow like that.. but if you let it get to full speed before you break then it should break properly... and second... from what I know you should never take the platter off of a turntable while its powered. Just figured i'd let you know dude :) dope videos btw
I picked up my first technics 1210s mk2s around 1996 for £60 the pair, yes £60, that's about $80, from a second hand shop who must not have known what they were, it was a big talking point between all the djs in my area, I had them about 4 years until my first child came along and had to sell them and got £400 the pair at the time, now your lucky to get 1 for £400, that's why I'm looking for an alternative, I have got 1 1210 I got from a market about 8 months ago for £150 but need a second obviously. may look into these Stantons.
Hi Kafe! First time i see one of your video's… I realize that there is much more than Technics… But on the HIFI-point of view: what is your favorite? (No mixing, scratching, just listening??) Greetz from Amsterdam!
People compare the newer turntables to technics because of course they don't skip because of serato or traktor. Use real vinyl technics wins in every way.
Hello, I may be looking to get some serious tables in the future, for now I'm using Serato and a controller, and play with my vinyls and Stanton M.203 mixer some. I have cheap Numark tables that work OK for listening, but I think that trying to scratch on them is pretty pointless. I am looking to get some tables by Reloop, Stanton, or possibly the AT LP-1240 tables. I have noticed that even the RP-8000 MIDI tables, have the same super OEM tone arms. I can't see spending $800 each on them at this point, the RP-7000 and ST-150 are both coming in at $600 and I'm wondering if they're worth getting over the AT LP-1240 ... I hit you up on FB with a message and a link to a retailer selling them for $350 or so.... GC and others will price match them too.... let me know if you've gotten them, or a chance to check them out at all.... Thanks for the videos... Isaiah
Go with the Stanton 150s if you are thinking about becoming a mobile or club DJ. The Reloops are dope but the build quality is questionable and IDK what the tonearm is made of. Its definitely not 100% metal. I can't speak on the ATs but I see than Serato and Rane had them in their booths for NAMM 2014.
I have a Stanton Mixer, and will look into the ST150 tables more. I've been doing mobile DJ work for a while, for now I'm using a controller/laptop setup, and looking for a small format CD player as a backup device. I'd like to get into turntables/DVS eventually, but likely won't be carting them about very often, I plan, rather, to build them into a permanent, flush mount setup in my house... One nice feature with the AT tables is the included cover, which makes it a decent value for what you're paying. I live in the mountains, miles from pavement, and we have wood heat.... dust is always an issue...LOL Looking to get a case/bag and Decksaver for my TM8 soon. I will keep looking into the tables, and hope that a Serato mixer similar to the Traktor Z2 comes out soon, or I may give Traktor a try when I decide to try DVS. It will likely be next winter/spring, as I still have to make the EV speakers and Terminal Mix 8 pay for themselves...LOL Thanks again for chatting and for your videos! Back to wading through the library.... peace.
If you are waiting on a Serato Mixer like the Z2 then you'll be waiting a long time. The 62 stomped all of that. There are only a few things that can be changed by Rane to make that mixer perfect but as of now, the Rane 62 is the best mixer in the world.
yeah, I'm looking for something along the lines of the Z2 in price.... maybe in a few years I can pick up a used Rane....LOL I have a feeling I'll end up trying Traktor ... :)
iamdjdk Reloop and AT are gonna be the exact same thing for a comparable model - they're basically completely plastic with a steel weight at the bottom to make them feel sturdier than they really are.
DAMN the Technics sl 1210MK2 that i have got new in 1989-90 and that i stil have is to me the best ever but i think i will get me a DENON DJ VL12 PRIME just for my Home HIFI System it would look so good on my Denon system but i bet it will not be better than my old Technics sl 1210MK2 sorry for my bad english
What scares me about the Stantons is the tonearm bearing slop I keep hearing about. I want that dealt with at the factory as Job One; I don't want to have to rebox and return decks until I get something that's set up right.
That is not the str8150 that is the st150. It is the exact same turntables I use and love them.! The only problem mine have now is the plastics are going sticky and braking down.. :/
i know why there there. Its just not my preference. I understand its a turntablist preference but until now I have yet to see super oem turntables in major dj battles.
BRACE and Vekked use vestax, Fong Fong and Angelo use reloop 7000-8000, and 69Beats (check him out if you didnt yet - guy has a style) use to use stantons 150 and now hes on pioneer team cuz of sponsorship, so oem are there also Dj Livia uses some oems idk if they are old kams 5000 or new ypsilons or whatever they name are.
Stanton was designed for turntablism....not for beatmaching / mixing....actually Technics at that time (late 70`s !) - built the 1200mk2 to be a Hi-fi turntable....They just find out they were good for clubs and djs...was by the way..totally,,,
Look on Ebay for deals. I got both of mine, new, for great prices. Different sellers, but the first Str8 was 429.00 and the second was 435.00. If you're patient and look, then you will definitely find them for around 900 a pair, including shipping.
Years later, as a proud owner of pairs of Technics 1200 mk2, Stanton Str8-100 and Str8-150's I agree with not liking the scratch purpose Start Stop on the corner so I just see it as a spare part, and the dark blue has me want to plasti-dip. had 1200s for 2 years, sorry, didnt live up 2 my expectations, then bought str8 150s,solid,rock solid.
In the early's..the 80's..Stanton made the best needles for the legendary Technics MK2 turntables...
i've had my technics sl-1200's since 1987 and they are still going strong and work like new to this very day... ohh and they have never been serviced... technics for the win......
Technics will never fail. Unless you fuckit up yourself. They are the Bentley of turntable
@@dj2dope820
You mean the Lexus of turntables like my 1998 GS 400. Made in Japan.
Yup mine too sine 89 still work like a champ

Nice video man. I have the pre-face lift STR8-150's with the old Stanton logo on. Absolutely love them.

The Tech12 can stop instantly, you just need to adjust the brake speed under the platter.
I know right? He NEEDS to get that adjusted asap
Yup
for break setup on technics you don't need to take off the plate. you need to just spin the plate to the right angle and you have access :)
I've had my Technics SL1200MK2's for 30 years now, i dont see any of these newer turtables still working in 30 years time, some of them won't even be working in 10 years time guaranteed. If you want a pair of turntables that will outlive you then look no further than the Technics Sl1200 range.
These ST-150s are better than the 1200s, no question. I gave up my Technics after I got a pair of these.
I don't know if you got the memo, but the 1200's aren't made anymore.

oh Lord not this shit again. any turntable will last if properly cared for. now and days people selling used techs for $600 + is redamndiculous

Fun fact:. The Stanton ST-150 and the Audio Technica LP1240 are identical mechanically.

No they are not the same specs, not at all. The St 150's have 4.5 kg torque compared to Technics 1.8kg. They are very different feeling TT's......

Greetz from Amsterdam!
VPI Industries
whatsup! im not much of a hifi guy lol but if I would have to get a turntable for listening I would try to get a pro-ject turntable.
How do you guys TEST Scratching with DVS? I mean what can go wrong with control vinyls? Or you test the torque?
hey man if i get a one just like dj system do u have to records or computer for the music
I love my Audio Technica 1240s.
you have 2 stop/starts as some djs turn them the other way so they can scratch without knocking the needle or just to keep it out of the way
Solid review. I think you're slightly biased towards the Technics, but not dissing the Stantons at all.
Is the turntables all the same with theyre vinyls
Size
love my 150's!
Good Review! I caught my STR8-150s for $350.00 for BOTH off Craigslist. I guess I got lucky.
Awesome deal!

+Poinzy If you can't adjust a tonearm, you have no business being near a deck.
Lol. Go tell it to your Mom, you conceited twerp.
Poinzy
...even she can adjust a tonearm!
After you finish sucking off Stanton, do you thank them for being allowed to fix their shitty turntables for nothing? Lol. What an idiot.
Poinzy
That makes no sense.
I don't think *I'm* the idiot here, bucko.
May I ask, what's your opinion on the at lp 120?
+Julian West from audio technica?
Yeah. Just curious since I've heard that some DJ's will use it to sub in for a 1200 since they're essentially the same thing.
Lower torque.

WOW! All that nice gear ad you have no idea why 2 start stop buttons are there??
i know why there there.
What the hell was the beat you used behind the scratching in the beginning of the video
I think it sounds like troublesome 96 by 2pac
Mass appeal by Gangstarr. Classic hip hop song. Check out their work.
Austin McNally DJ premiere beat yo.
Stanton was designed for turntablism....not for beatmaching / mixing....actually Technics at that time (late 70`s !) - built the 1200mk2 to be a Hi-fi turntable....They just find out they were good for clubs and djs...was by the way..totally,,,
My 12/10 mk2's stop on a dime.your 1200 needs servicing
Pressing the start/stop too quickly the platter won't stop. They need to reach their rpm before they can stop instantly.
i got 2 stanton str8 150 for €50 i had to buy foot and counterweigh for 1 of them, bargain of my fucking life.
wow thats a steal!
not the purpuse of the video but I have to say : "I love le 707 !!"
The stantons seem to be just as good as the 1200s
the reason people.. the reason.... *press play button hahahahahhaha
Adjust your technics brake they will stop so hard they spin backwards if you turn them up too far.
Cool. Too bad. I'm. Losing my vision. Really wanna. Get some stantons
I just picked up these two Stanton Str150 Mk1 for £350.00 each new.
One Technics 1210Mk7 £800.00 SMH
You need 78 for vintage records. Like really really old.
Thanks!
wtf happened to your technic bro??? Daaaaayum... gotta fix it asap
Hey man not good at all to pull the platter of your deck while its on.. Real bad for it.. Just sayin homie. I subbed..

Pointless, boring, tedious review !
How are these stantons for Club use? ?
Can anyone tell me any exact prices for these turntables?
stanton is about 599 and tech is about a G
Look on Ebay for deals. I got both of mine, new, for great prices. Different sellers, but the first Str8 was 429.00 and the second was 435.00.
If you're patient and look, then you will definitely find them for around 900 a pair, including shipping.
