The British Centurion Mk1 is often credited as the first true main battle tank, though I'm not sure I agree. In War Thunder it is a very temperamental medium tank. Its armor rarely works, its damage is poor, it's slow, and its fast reload rate only lasts for six rounds. Gaijin really should buff the damage on APDS and solid shot shells.

To everyone saying to use the regular AP round first, that's what I did the day prior. The difference in damage was negligible.

I always go for the Sabot shell first with most British tanks, but also always keep some softer, non-sabot shells in reserve, it will be better for flanking maneuvers and side shots, as the spalling is (sometimes) usually better.

In my experience, the solid shot AP does spall more, but it's such a small difference that it's better to just have the higher pen the APDS has.
Usually I do APDS to pen and disable, and follow up with the solid shot if applicable to finish

@@andrewe.2464 Maybe, though having it be at 6.0 and maybe a pre research to the MK would make sense. Could lower the reload a bit due to the 20 making the turret a bit more cramped. As for the MK2 could make a for a decent 6.3 heavy. tank

7:13 The Super Pershing iirc is most notable for fighting a Panther at Dessau which for about 60 years everyone thought had been a King Tiger because of the sloped front, nobody really knowing what a KT looked like on the western front, and the state the wreck was in after until the wall went down and the records could be cobbled together and they realized there weren't any KTs in the area at the time.
And also the shell was known to have gone through the UFP, through the engine block and out the back of the tank and a KT's UFP would have been too strong. Go figure.
Is that the fight where they have it on film near the cathedral? Or was that a regular Pershing? 🤔
@@daniel_f4050 I'm not aware of any film with the super pershing but maybe, I can only think of the very very shaky footage of the M4 fighting a panther but that doesn't mean it's not out there.
Edit: Found the footage you're talking about, no that's at Cologne and with a regular pershing.
Engine blocks are not made of armoured steel. Not hardened and different trace elements so it is not going to be of much use in stopping a shell. It most likely will just crack and split allowing the shell to pass through.
The armoured plates being 80mm and 40mm are of importance especially with the angles.
The front of the KT.. 150mm armoured steel at an angle. Homogenous too.
Far more resistant than a Panther hull.
Still impressive to pass through a Panther front to back.

That was a normal amount of CAS in my experience, just a lot less accurate.
I'm not a good player, hardly a threat to anyone, but I die more often to CAS than another tank. And yeah, I get out of the spawn ASAP, I try not to hang around or go close to cap points unless absolutely needed, hide in shadows or under cover.... It makes no difference, the bombs seem to ignore buildings, walls or defilade.
Very unrealistic if you do research on actual damage to armoured vehicles in WW2 through to Vietnam, but heh, there's stuff all about this game that's realistic.

Seeing as you're doing british tanks, i think a video on the Conway would be entertaining, that thing has a railgun on it and some surprisingly trolly turret armor
It's does have some troll armor compared to the FV4005 and the size of gun while smaller than FV4005's its APDS can butter through most ww2 vehicles but struggles with late cold war armor as E.R.A. slowly starts appearing

So we've learnt spookston is one of those Americans who calls themselves Irish because they had a great great great grandparent who lived there once.
the Cent Mk.1 was my favorite tank to take out during events when it was 5.7. With all the german 5.7 spam during events, it was really good with that APDS. You could just pen Panthers UFP at 1200m. But thats what got it to 6.0, too good against brindead german mains.
Well as you said too good for 5.7. Brain didnt help you, if your armor is as useful, as bucket on back of kv85.
Same story with the IS-2. You could slice Panthers open

Best way to use it is getting into good hull down positions, on some maps the centurion is disgustingly strong because of OP hull down positions other tanks can’t use due to their poor depression
Centurion's turret isn't great though. The hull can block Tigers and Panthers if angled corretly but the turret has huge weakspots.

@@katyusha1283 yeah but in a good hull down position you don’t actually have to keep the turret open to enemy fire all the time, just when firing. Plus the major weakspot of the turret front roof no longer exists if you are firing at a depressed angle
@@deeznoots6241 What about the other weak point, the MG port on the turret. Tigers and Panthers can easily pen there and APHE will nuke your crew.

10:20 happened to me today playing the foch. 120mm solid shot to the turret ring of some british tank. completely absorbed the entire projectile.
This is what happens when Gaijin models British tanks based on "safe limits" from crew manuels when most other nations get "absolute technical limits" from actual testing limits.

I love the British tech tree, probably because I am so used to solid AP now. Nonetheless, they're fun if you play them the right way, usually I use them as they should be used in real combat. Does not apply for all tanks of course, but the mostly work. As long as Gaijin doesn't spoil the fun !

The Cent Mk 1 is my favourite tank in the game, good armour, great gun, good mobility for a medium. It may lack damage but against 4 crew Soviet tanks the APDS usually 1 taps and and against a panther or tiger 1 shot can kill the gunner, driver and engine.
As a sole British main, I'd love for you to play more of their vehicles. Try the chieftain or the Vickers mk1 next
The centurion is in that funny spot between a medium and heavy where it has the weaknesses of both, but strengths of neither. Still, pretty fun to play.

I love that tank! Its only down side is that it is rank 2 so you can't use it for special/daily tasks or events.

I usually play the British with a line-up of their Sho't Kal Dalet (with ERA, a laser rangefinder and an upgraded engine) and a Chieftain Mk 3, since it has decent armor and the APDS on it actually does some damage. Then add Striker and Warrior for thermals and a suitable SPAA.
Olifant Mk.2 is probably the ultimate Centurion in terms of uprades, although both Sweden and Israel have pretty decent upgraded versions of the Centurion too, but the Mk1 is kind of painful, since it doesn't even get a stabilizer.

Back when this tank was new the entire turret structure (aside from the mantlet) had 152mm of armor on it. It's odd shape made it an absolute monster and most people didn't understand where to shoot.
I still dont know where to shoot at it. For my T34-85 cent mk1 sometimes feels like an impenetrable fortress.
I read up on it and the cent 1 did have 152 mm of turret armor why they changed it to 127 in game I’ll never know

I loved playing the Centurion. When I was still into ground RB It was one of my favourites for grinding events.
For the mk1 its better to just use regular apcbc and apds if a tiger 2 appears
No APDS is the British tanks bread and butter of late ww2 cold war era tank like APHE is to german tanks

@@calliope9040 Only at max for side shots, for frontal shots, definitely use APDS. I know it's annoying, but still, I'd rather have a better chance to disable a vehicle than have it somehow ricochet my shell still.
@@dessertfoxo4096 17pdr APCBC is definitely still good at 6.0, oneshots Shermans and T-34s very reliably while APDS takes 2-3 shots to kill. I do still take mostly APDS but APCBC is always handy for a downtier and killing anything not german.

Also fun fact about a lot of the British tanks, if you get ammo racked by being shot in the ammo near the driver, that literally CAN'T happen as those are the rounds themselves (solid shot / sabot) and the charges are stored separately.
Finally love for the brit-tech tree. I would absolutely love to see Spookston pull out the Bonqueror.
Cent 1 was one of my favourite tanks of the British tree, second only to the Cent 3. The ability to vaguely 1v1 Panthers and actually reverse was really nice.

I have noticed that APDS just doesn't spall. It's like Gaijin decided that only 2 rounds should be capable of kills: APHE and APFSDS. Yesterday I was in my STB-1 using APDS and shot an Obj 120 directly in the ammo, and it only turned it red.
All you have to do is realize that every balancing choice is done to keep Russia number one, and everything becomes clear. Russia primarily uses aphe and apfsds, so which rounds are best?
I don't know why they moved this to 6.0, it was decent at 5.7 IMO. Before the change, it was decently mobile (for a British tank) and the armor was kinda usable. But the ultimate benefit was its high pen and fast reload that allowed you to hole-punch German armor and kill them with two quick shots (if you knew "how 2 aim" that is), combined with -12 degrees of gun depression and one of the better reverse speeds. Now it feels kinda inadequate... Guess Britain is just not allowed to have fun...

It might just be I aim for ammo to much or that I get lucky shots or that I do play it more careful, but I have never used all my sabot rounds lol. I carry only 5 more rounds of it than you do. But still always love watching your content. Always cracks me up and makes me laugh. Keep up that great work.
Early APDS is good for two things: getting you assists from precise disabling shots, and getting you killed when it does absolutely no damage.
When I first got the Centurion after days of grinding through the British tech tree without reverse gears, it felt like a massive improvement. Despite the mediocre top speed, for me, the reverse gear is all I need, and the guns of the Centurion series are just great overall.

According to the famous ytb historian Mark Felton though, the Super Pershing destroyed a Panzer IV tank (which somewhat mistaken for "Tiger" tank) and at first an unidentified German AFV, which was later identified as a Jagdpanther
Everything the Americans fought in Europe was mistaken for a tiger, Despite none operating in the US sectors which was by design. British forces bore the brunt of the heavy panzers so the US forces could fight through quickly and flank.
@@ChopperMeir yeah in North West Europe the American forces encountered more Tiger II's than I's as most Tiger I's in NW theatre were concentrated against the British and Canadians. But the American forces did saw more Tiger I's in Italy since the 504th and 508th Heavy Panzer Battalion did see action against US tanks and were only using Tiger I's, never ressuplied by Tiger II's

As a rare Britain main I am apparently just really lucky with how often I one shot stuff. I consistently get 5-10 kills per game playing British tanks especially in the 2.7-7.7 BR range.
maybe im just biased because im British myself but the British tech tree is brilliant. Firefly, the centurions, conqueror, Cromwell 1 and the crocodile are all brilliant vehicles and i wish people would play them more. ive also never had any issues with spall.

This thing felt fantastic after the pain of the British ground tree from 3.0 to 5.3. Decent armor and a reverse gear! It was the first vehicle, after the Crusader, that actually felt like it was on par with the opponents I was facing and not just a glass cannon.
How is it even possible to call 3.0-5.3 britain the painful part of the tree. Its arguably the most stable part of them all. You havea superb 3.3 lineup with both armour, speed and the ballance in-between. The 3.7 lineup with additional speed and a sherman, the 4.7 golden lineup with the Avenger, Firefly and Churchill VII, as well as the Churchill III and Achilles or Concept 3 (or both).
After that at 5.3/5.7 you can literally have an entire 5 set lineup of only 17-pdr vehicles. Challenger, Firefly, Avenger, Comet and Concept 3.
I really can't see how you can complain about this from a general point of view unless you're upset they're lacking some very specific thing that you're personally dependent on...
This guy has not played Cromwell 1, Sherman II, and SARC 6pdr combo. Throw in the conehead anti air and SPAA car for the sleeper shitter vibes. The game has gotten worse, but the combo doesn't make you roll for mental illness. Fantastic pain is slow brit 2pdrs at about 2.7-3.3.
I will call out the Churchill 7 suggestion. You want to suffer, you play Churchill now. Everything lol fucks you in the face. It was slightly playable a while back, but now you are really in deep shit.
The Top speed is low but it can usually get there quickly and its still fairly agile while turning or going over rough terrain.
The second you shot that jumbo, I immediately got an ad saying “you should enjoy life while you can” ☠️

The British tech tree is what every tree would feel lke if APHE was modelled correctly.
The only reason people complain now is because they're getting carried by a rediculous mechanic that British tanks don't rely on.

I’d love if you could mix in a little more vehicle history. I struggle to tell which era some tanks are from with the BR system. Didn’t realize the super Pershing actually fought against panzer 4s for example!
I mean, super Pershing is a very late ww2 tank, the only reason it fought panzer 4s is because Germany was close to losing at this point and didn't have neither the logistics nor the resources to get good tanks at that point. They had to resort to using the already many produced panzer 4s from before. Tiger 2 and Panthers (somewhat) were a rare sight.
Well really the Super Pershing itself was just a 1 off testing vehicle that was cobbled together in France. Basically they had a few early Pershing's to hand while it was still undergoing trials and though it would be interesting to try attaching as many extra armour plates as they could. It was only used on two combat instances as far as I'm aware, one where it took on what was likely to have been a Panther close to its testing area and another instance it took out what some claimed to have been a Tiger but is more likely to haven a Panzer 4.
@@zaleost Apparently, the Super Pershing's first kill was a Jagdpanther, shot from a distance of 1.5 km. The second kill is still being debated to this very day, but many historians today has settled on it being a Panzer IV, as the nearest Tiger 2 at that time was over 70 miles away. American tankers were notorious for calling all German tanks as a "Tiger"
I completely agree with Spookston. If you find that you aren't achieving 'one shot, one kill' on opponents, shift to crippling as many as possible to get the Assist when teammates finish them off.
Hey odd request, but I recommend trying stimulator with some friends! I dunno if you've tried stimulator in a squad but its very fun cooperating, pointing out possible enemies and revealing each others positions when far apart. Other than the occasional braindead twin engine aircraft rarely ground pound and there is a lot of map knowledge involved too. Its a slower pace and takes a lot of caution but its very fun!

can you play the Ho-I? It is a Chi-Nu at 2.0 with a gun similar to the german short 75, except it has almost 500g of TNT.
If it is not enough it has HEAT and a very good HE (can overpressuer Pz IIIs and IVs if you hit the turret roof).
It is very mobile, has great armor, and 15 degrees of undepression.

I focused on Brittan for a while to get the Centurion, because I remember my friend telling me it was one of the earliest mbts with apds. And when it was finally unlocked I just really enjoyed playing it, but was kind of put off by other people telling me Brittan late tier falls off. Ah well, the tanks is always fun to come back to for some games.
Play the Strv Delat Torn, its basically a Chi Ri II but actually good. Good gun with amazing TNT filler (almost the same as a German 88 but on a 75), more shells on the autoloader, amazing mobility, way smaller profile. Overall better, at the same BR lol.
Try the FV4202 or the Conqueror next! Britian has an insane 7.7 lineup and those two tanks go so hard

It's a tough tank this one, sometimes it works and other times it really doesn't - I'd be curious to see your thoughts on the Centurion Mk 3 and Mk 10 in comparison though Spooks, the 20-pounder seems to behave a bit better despite being only slightly larger calibre and the L7 is pretty good even with the early, 1950s APDS only; and obviously the stabiliser make things quite fun with getting the first shot off pretty consistently. And also as an Englishman descended from an Irish family who had to flee Ireland during the potato famine, sign me up for struggling with godawful British tanks but you wouldn't catch me dead approving of the English aristocracy lmao
I hope he does play the other Cents. As you say, they get better once the firepower starts improving. It's been a while since I touched the game though, so Gaijoob might have bodged the numbers since. On the Potato Famine comment, Spookston is yet another American who pulls the "muh heritage" card, but overlooks the Corn Laws and the really brutal suppression of any dissent in England that was going on at the same time. Yeah, the aristocrats weren't stacking up English bodies up like cordwood, but that was only because there would be nobody to work in their factories if they did. Given the opportunity, the British ruling class can be just as cruel towards "their people" in England as they are to anyone else, and that continues to this day.

You were using it "wrong", man. APDS loves to go through the front. Panthers are OHK usually, with a center of mass shot from the front. If you plan to flank, just switch to the solid round, or make sure you get their ammo racks on the first tap. It takes a while to get used to, but there is a certain satisfaction in bounding a panther shot with your UFP while penetrating theirs back effortlessly. That's the main selling point of this fella over, say, the Challenger (which has the same gun and better reload and speed but far worse armor and reverse gears).
Still, though, your "wrong" is 10x better than my better, but it is what it is.
yeah, i always bring APDS and APCBC in almost equal amount, APDS for frontal and Heavies such as IS or King Tiger, APCBC for flanking shots and against Tigers, Panzers, etc

I would like to see you play the Leopard 1A1 and Leopard 1A5 in one Video. They are 0.3 BR away from each other with the first being 8.7 and the latter being 9.0. I'd like to heat your opinion about that because i think the BR can't be right like it is. The 1A5 has better APFSDS, Thermals and a laser range finder. I don't think that justifies 0.3 BR in difference but as I said, I'd like to hear your opinion on that. Have fun and I wish you all the best :).

Fun facts:
The regular 17pdr APCBC could pen the Panther UFP at 500m irl
The difference in damage between solid shot and APHE is negligible irl in all but the most extreme cases (like a 122mm entering a Panzer IV or something would definitely blow it up but a 76mm APHE not so much)
Both US APCR and British APDS underperform pretty heavily on flat armour
Tigers still lack their RPM limiters but every single British tank with the meteor engine gets their RPM limiter (even if crews often found ways of disabling it)
The main reason I like to watch spookston so much is that I can relate with his pure hatred of CAS
