    I think you missed a major one... squash Vine borers. I have been growing for 40 years organically, and I have finally found a variety of zucchini that I'm able to beat squash vine borers... that is you have to find an heirloom variety that that vines, not the compact variety. once a squash Vine bore hits at the base, you dig it out, and then you bury as much of the stem all along the stem as possible, so that it will send out more roots. doing that, I have good zucchini crops and I'm giving away zucchinis. finally!

    I always grow marigolds interspersed throughout my garden. 2 reasons: nematode control and fantastic bee attractors. Since these flowers cover the yellow to orange spectrum, I also include purple and white flowering plants. I never have problems with pollination. Oh yeah, always grow basil close to yer tomatoes. Not only do they give the garden a wonderful smell, but for reasons I am not sure of, they just seem to love growing side by each.

    Well, Jeff, I too remember when Zucchinis way over produced. But, now we have raised beds it isn't happening. I may be planting them too close and just relying on the rain. I think next year I'll plant them in the no-till garden where I can spread them out more. That is probably our biggest problem. Thanks for sharing! Take care!

    "as sure as squash-borers in June" is something farmers in SC say.. I have experienced this every year.. you need to get your yellow or zucchini in early before the borers show up. Plants are splendid until then. Then your beautiful squash plants look good, but they don't produce.

    I'm training my acorn & zucchini to grow vertically. I don't know how much growing time my crops have, but none seem to want to slow down. My experimental beans are growing rapidly too. I had to grow a few of each in a control container just so I know what' growing in my garden. I'm actually growing a yellow split pea........in 3 days its root system & foliage were both over 3."
    I'm getting nervous on my inground veggie plants. It's gonna be 104 on Sat., but our last day of "summer" is supposed to be Sept. 30th.

      @@TheRipeTomatoFarms Thanks Jeff.....you're a godsend. I also seem to have a small broccoli crown too. My brassica plants turned into sacrificial plants over a month ago yet this little crown is doing its best to thrive.
      In regards to overwintering & every thing else.....do you have any suggestions for my area in NE, Montana?? I did so much research on planting organically, not expecting even half the blessings this little garden has produced. In the event these fabulous producers will come back again for another year...I'd be grateful in knowing what your thoughts are in setting that in motion. I'm also looking into purchasing a greenhouse able to withstand our winters. A lot is riding on this 9x15 miracle which blessed us this season. My yard is prime territory for growing enough food to help feed my family & those in food crisis here. I need options....thank you in advance for whatever help you can share. Cheers, ~ Covah

      @@TheRipeTomatoFarms The flea beetles are what devastated all the gardens in our town. I'm a chem-free person, so I had to let them do their worst. Do you know of a greenhouse that can withstand snow? I looked on Home depot & HONEY JOY claims theirs do. Normally I start hydroplanting & then ease my seedlings into solid ground. I'm trying to get ahead of the game, so a greenhouse would be a priceless asset if one exists for my climate. Thanks, ~ Covah

    We just moved our home into our new house in a month ago the zucchini and squash we’re growing beautifully. They were gorgeous. They are perfect. However, during the time we moved in a couple weeks we had three gigantic so you can go cause I didn’t get a chance to get out there within that week or two to pick them and then it just became so crowded that I think the whole crowd failed yellows just stop growing completely in the zucchini died so looks like it’s the end of the season and I’m hoping next year I can get this to work a little bit better.

      I watched someone on TH-cam. He said to get a syringe, fiill it with BT and put some of the BT on the stem. This will keep the bug from laying eggs on the stem. I've been doing this in 2023 Spring/Summer. So far (fingers crossed), no squash vine borers. Hope I didn't just jinx myself.

  • @Donna_G
    @Donna_G 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The only time I got zucchini was in 2019; but, it was just one, very short zucchini and that's because, I planted the seeds too late. I tried last year. I planted the seed early enough. The plants grew and produced flowers; but, the flowers kept dropping off. This year, I didn't plant zucchini at all. I planted cucumbers; but, I'm going to do something different with them next year. The cucumbers are small pickling cucumbers. I got the seeds from MIgardener. They are really viny plants and I think they might do better if they had something to climb on. Maybe I can pay for two beds next year, if any are available.
    My bed is small; but, I have not measured it. I can water it at the most 3 days a week. But, I try to water it well and watch for water to come out the bottom.
