  • Why are my zucchini flowers falling off? Should I be worried if my zucchini (courgette) flowers are all male? In this video, I help you understand why your zucchini flowers might be falling off or dying. I show you how to distinguish male vs female flowers, discuss the life cycle of a zucchini plant, and tell you what to look out for to determine if your plant is healthy or not.

      Do you see pollinators in your garden? If so, i wouldn’t worry yet. I have squash growing from female flowers that I’ve never seen open. Also, there’s a delay between when the male flowers show up and start attracting pollinators to when the female flowers are “ready”. There’s a lot that happens in our garden when we’re not around!

      Last year I saw a lot of ants in my zucchini bed. I had already been losing bloom after bloom with no zucchini all spring and summer but by the end of the year around early November, I got the biggest zucchini I’ve ever seen. But it can't be a pollination issue when the zucchini fall off WAY before the flower even opens. These get to be about an inch big, with a tiny flower, then drop. Same with the round zucchini variety. I have one now that has five little round zucchini about a centimeter in size, and today, I just saw that one is turning yellow! I'm starting to take it personally...LOL!

    Some of my courgette flowers (female) have fallen off the but I still see a courgette growing. Why does that happen? Should I pick that courgette or let to grow?

    • @NowGardening
      @NowGardening  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Leave the courgette to grow. The female flowers that fall off happen because they didn’t get pollinated. Not to worry as long as you have some courgette growing. In nature in general, plants produce lots of flowers but not every flower becomes a fruit.

    Than you for this helpful information! I am using an Earthbox to grow my zucchini in for the first time. The plant is huge and beautiful and had started to bloom. Sadly we had a major hail storm and it really did a number on the plant. There are leave broken off, leaves ripped or holes in them...do you think the plant will still survive and produce? I had one baby zucchini on the plant and it was only about 3 inches long, but it rotted at the end and stopped growing even before the hail storm! Thank you for sharing this information! I love to learn about vegetable growing!

    • @NowGardening
      @NowGardening  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Deanette! I’m sorry you got hit by a hail storm. Our weather has been crazy this year too. Last year one of my zucchini plants started having issues, and I cut off the bad parts and it still produced, although it was delayed compared to the others. Some damage to the leaves from hail shouldn’t affect the plant much, but zucchini are temperamental. You should know within a couple of day if it’s going to survive. If it survives, it should produce. Although if the zucchini were already rotting on the vine before the storm, that usually indicates a calcium deficiency (google “blossom end rot”). Best of luck! 💚 Val

    It’s been about 5 weeks since I planted my zucchini seeds and they seem ok, they are beginning to flower but not producing many leaves. And the new leaves are white, doesn’t look like powdery mildew, it’s just the way they seem to be growing. Any idea why?

    • @NowGardening
      @NowGardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve seen white spots on zucchini leaves that can be natural variation and not powdery mildew, but I’ve never heard of leaves being all white. Magnesium deficiency can also cause leaves to be a pale color. I admit I’m mystified! If it’s powdery mildew, it will spread to the stalk of them plant too once it advances. Do you see that?

    I have a zucchini that is about 6 inches long dark green with the flower still on the end and it looks like the zucchini itself started growing out of the flower end itself. It kinda looks like broccoli and seeds coming out of it. I've never grown zucchini before and this seems not normal. Can anyone tell me why this happened

    • @NowGardening
      @NowGardening  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's absolutely normal for the flower to still be attached to the zucchini.. Normally it will fall off, but if not you can remove it when you harvest the zucchini. The zucchini will grow from the main part of the plant as if it's a stem growing from behind the flower and pushing it out as it grows. I hope that helps!

    • @slightly2stoopid
      @slightly2stoopid 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NowGardening but is it normal for the inside of the flower to have seeds and other stuff growing out of it at the open end. It's like the inside side of the zucchini is growing out of it with seeds being pushed out of it. I just noticed my cucumbers are starting to have a bunch of small buds around were the flowers are starting to bloom some have two flowers in one spot. I had a problem with aster yellow disease last year with my coneflowers and pulled them all. I feel like my garden maybe being affected by this now too this year
