We use the ones from Concrete pump supply. 4" and 5". 5" is almost never used. It helps to have the reducer, because you can't push the hose, or it'll kink, so you need the leverage of the reducer to rotate the elbow. Benefits are, you can pump slow and really smooth, while keeping a big hose, reducing plugs big time. Dowsides, if the hose guy doesnt know how to push the hose, he can kink it very easily and make a dangerous situation. Also have to watch for wear near the coupler, because they dont stay open, so the concrete wears the hose near the area that it folds at. We use the conforms aircuff with ours always, they say not to, but we havent had an issue. Just turn the pressure down to 40 or so.

I just placed an order through Alliance parts department for a 20’ long, 3” diameter lay-flat hose. Typically we’ll hang a 2.5” whip for most of our residential flatwork and architectural pours. With the secondary hopper screen which we run, plugging in a 3” is quite rare, so this should be a nice benefit versus the 2.5” which we’re accustomed to. Can’t wait to try it out!

Hey buddy! So our guys do primarily custom home stuff, with a smattering of light commercial/industrial work here and there. We sent out an army of guys on this one is we were seeing near record temperatures and wanted to have it placed in before the sun came around the trees. Half of the guys were cut loose as soon as it was placed in and went to do another job about 20 minutes down the road. Job turned out great.

It’s one of the most gorgeous sites which I’ve been part of in my 25 years doing this. Every time we pour there I take a minute or two just to appreciate it. True story.

Articulating what you are an expert in is extremely overrated. It’s is a struggle with myself in my profession as well. Seems as if it should be extremely simple but for whatever reason, it is not.

Is it common to have heated driveways in Canada?
The actual cost to run it I would have to do some digging. Off the top of my head I’m going to say it would have to be at least a couple hundred dollars per month (during the freezing months). I wouldn’t say heated driveway are necessarily common here, definitely much more common amongst these higher end homes.

Yeah, with our damp, cold climate, it definitely makes sense for some of these steeper driveways (makes sense, if you have the $$$, of course) 😁😁😁
Had a good chuckle when I saw you put your lunch on the motor. Back when I worked nights as a deputy sheriff, I would sit a can of food, bowl of chili, etc. on the motor for 20-30 minutes. Sure beat driving all the way home to heat it up!
Seems most all your pump operators have a pretty decent attitude. Thats preference important with some people. I know in our area disgruntled workers can tend to send things through the pump that shouldn't be all because they might not like the operator. Play nice, get along, makes for easier days when everyone is more apt to help.
I’ve always said the operators are the best sales guys. Placers and mixer drivers should be the pump guys best friends (especially on these residential pours), there often comes a time when we need each other to get out of a sticky situation. The more friends the better.
All that being said, it’s amazing how trying to squeeze those one or two additional late jobs in a week for maybe not the most organized of customers can destroy moral very quickly (only took us about two decades to figure that on out, lol!).
@@canadianconcretepumper1979 Very much the truth. It's a fine line between winning and losing in the industry. The outcomes tend to be extreme on both sides of the spectrum and it all comes down to choice.

I've done a lot of concrete work. As a Well Driller for 45 years pumping well seals for 1,000's domestic wells, to hundreds of 800ft irrigation and Water District wells, as well as a tremendous amount of form work (treads for stairs and large landings)! I love to watch all your Pours! Subed

We have a 4 inch version, doesn't splash at all. need to make sure the swivel elbow is nice and free so it is always pointing down. Also need a hose guy who a) is not a hose hugger b) realises it can't be pushed as far as a regular hose as it will kink and block.
I’m considering the 4” version over the 3” because it would be essentially “plug proof” with the mixes and hopper screens which we run. Thank you for the input 🙏🙏🙏

They also call them "lay-flat" hoses. Essentially a water pump hose with a heavy duty flange in place of the typical aluminum coupling. Not very common in our market, but I could definitely see them being handy for those jobs in which we would typically hang a 20' hose to get over/around/between the house(s).
0:57 is that Bentonite?
Yes sir! Powdered bentonite. We mix it up with water for priming the pump/lines. I also like coating the inside of hopper with it for an easy washout.
Lay flat hoses are essential to have on the deck. They come in super handy for every and any type of wall that can be poured. It can get down in between rebar for tall walls and in real tight situations you can run any possible way due to the flexibility. I mean everyone has their preference but for me they aren’t very idealistic for slabs and flat work just because you can’t maneuver the hose very well because instead of pushing the hose side to side, where your hands are , the hose will just bend. Again if it works for you sweet , just giving my two cents. Btw my favorite part of this video was the Lowkey “I’m not that old”😂😂
Just put an order in for a 20’ lay-flat (3” diameter) from Alliance parts department. Looking forward to trying out an upcoming architectural wall and/or sidewalk pour.
So when you set up. On a down hill. You like the non working side to be a little higher then the working side?
I always like my non-working side to be very slightly higher (like 1 degrees) as I find that the machine is less prone to lifting outriggers on the “light side” when the boom is fully stretched out. Manufacturers spec. is within 3 degrees, so this is just my own personal preference within their specifications.
It's nice not to chain up to get out of the driveway, but snow turns to water, where does that go , and hell of a fuel in the winter. I'm in California bay area.
The melt off runs into the drains placed at verifies location throughout the driveway. Usually with these types of homes, heating the driveway 4-5 months per year is “within the budget” 😂😂😂
I ran several over the years. Even a 5” running slow would no splash. Make sure swivel elbow is really loose. If not that’s where it would jam also first place to wear out. Can be a little pain to wash out. Overall loved them not sure if cost versus wear is worth it.

Just have to make certain the pipes aren’t set/don’t float too close to the surface. Definitely have to be extra careful.
Hopefully on the next heated driveway pour you’ll go a little more in depth how the heated system works. Boiler etc. Temp it works at, is it glycol they use etc. Drain system needed
For sure. Next time we’ve got one coming up I’ll try liaise with the plumber to get all the details.
Well.... for one thing, don't use electrician's tape on the PEX tubing.... the 'pressure sensitive adhesive' eats it.

Have you ever primed back in the hopper or is phx the only crazy people ?
I actually do it quite regularly, usually on pours where we don’t have anywhere suitable for spreading the fist bit of wet stuff out of the boom. It’s a great option. Priming back into the mixer can be a good one as well. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

@@EliRivera-do5nc just be careful when you do, that the end of the hose isn’t butted up flush against any of the mixers fins. I learned this one the hard way on a two week old pump, using black coloured concrete, setup on a busy downtown Vancouver street 🙃🙃🙃
@@canadianconcretepumper1979 I found out water washing . When that hose kicks out you are in for a clean up day. The mixer the pump the street and any other car you get concrete on. Gota love the rookie days

Man. Youre blessed with such small aggregate and smooth mud. In maryland we have to deal with 1 to 1.5in aggregate all day and remanufactured sand. No chance of a 2.5 in hose. Were stuck with the 4 and 5 inchers.
Not a day goes by that I don’t appreciate that materials which we have to work with around here. Some days I almost feel guilty pumping through 200’ of all 2” line. We get new guys whom complain about having to drag hose, and I constantly remind them how lucky they are not having to deal with 4” and 5” line. Almaty need to send them out your way for a short tour to smarten ‘em up! 😁😁😁
@@canadianconcretepumper1979 dont feel too guilty. For most commercial jobs we have the finishers help hook up all the pipe. We rarely use more than 50 ft of hose on line jobs. I recently saw the dragon egg video. That looks so much easier than dragging hose pans. Im gonna have to make a recommendation to the higher ups
@@garrettd6505 Yeah man, we LOVE the dragon eggs. I was a little bit skeptical as to how well the composite shell would hold up, but we've put some good mileage on these things now and they're still performing as new.
Man that has got to be one expensive heated driveway, that view is spectacular. Turn a switch to clear your driveway of snow and ice what a way to go. Enjoyed the videos I was a tower crane tech for 30 years and watched many yards of concrete being poured and pumped up high rises. In the winter I would stand beside poured walls to get any heat from them to make it thru the days while jacking up tower cranes.

As a hose guy, an ran one on a foundation pour and really didn’t like it in terms of that it didn’t like being pushed around like a regular hose. For most of our flatwork pours, the guys aren’t really pushing too much as the priority is just to keep potential splatter down. I’m thinking it could be very helpful for that.

I’ve been loving these longer video’s lately. With today being the exception, this is perfect Saturday/ Sunday morning coffee content.
My question for you is why do you spray water into the s-tube rather then to just open the prime port and fill? Am I missing a trick?
Also a know you’ve been saying you’ve had a rough go with priming with slick through rubber hose. I do it with 3-3.5in and what I’ve been doing lately is when I’m attaching my hoses, I spray oil in the metal coupling ends of the hose. And when I use the slick, I throw a few squirts of dawn dish soap on top before I fill it up with water. When this mixture is pumped, I’ve found it to separate less and almost create a huge bubble inside the hoses. One of these days I’ll get a video sent your way on how to.
That would be awesome to see a video of your prime out with the slick. I’ve heard guys mention the dish soap trick as well. Would be cool to see it in action.
The reason why I spray water up into the barrels rather than removing the prime-port cap and spraying into there: it’s quicker/easier and, it works 😂. I’ll use the port when priming with bentonite on the larger booms, but I haven’t really found any need to use it for the mid-sized and smaller machines.
