even if the dykes wont hold, my village thats 5m below sea level will stay dry (for the most part.. some spots will flood up to 50cm high) Also we know if a storm is going to hit days in advance, it doesnt just take minutes.. and if flooding happens we have 6 hours to get higher up. Closing a river with a dam is never a solution, dams only create more issues when you are at the lowest point of the river
The location of the Netherlands on the North Sea coast and estuaries means that ocean waves are weakened or dispersed before they reach land. In addition, the Dutch coast is protected by extensive estuaries and marshes, which create buffer zones between the sea and the land. Ocean currents can also help to reduce the impact of waves before they reach the coast.

Biggest dam in the Netherlands, the Afsluitdijk, is constructed out of... clay. Boulderclay to be more precise, and filled with sand. Covered with Norwegian basalt, now replaced by concrete lego blocks, with openings that break the waves but let the water flow back to the sea easily without erosion.
I mean the inland dams are also made out of basicly dirt. The Netherlands is a delta, if it rains allot, the rivers dont overflow, with those dams. But even that is sometimes no enough. I live in Nijmegen, which is a city in the east of the Netherlands. Its a city next to river and we basicly destroyed half of the village opposite of the river, called lent (like 10 ish years ago). We did that so the river has more space to flow. It was a controversial thing at the time, but it turned out pretty good.

What you tell us is really interesting and well researched. Just one correction: Sea level rise due to climate change is negligible. Maes is pronounced like the river Maas. The 'e' is an old way of spelling to make the 'a' sound as 'aa', (pronounce a long 'a',) just as we Dutch do now with two 'a's = aa! It is thus not 'Meeslandkering', but Maaslandkering. (I heard in the video that you pronounce the river 'Maas' in the correct way!)

P.s. the 2 dams to make the Northern Sea closed of would do a lot of damage to the ecosysteem. The man who tought it up said if we have to build it we would have failed.
Nope. The Maeslantkering is configured to close at a rise of 3 meters, so around 10 feet. The Hartelkering is configured to close earlier. Those systems are linked though, so if one of them wants to close, they both close. In short, The Maeslantkering protects the front door with the Hartelkering protecting the side door (The Hartelkanaal).
1:26 Did you actually study the subject? The Delta-project was a reaction to the 1953 disaster called the Watersnoodramp (Februari 1), a flooding in the South-West of the Netherlands and adjacent Belgium in which about 1850 Dutch people were killed. How could you come up with the year 1937 then? This is rubbish. I'm not gonna watch this any further, and you earned yourself a big thumbs down.
oh dont worry, the dutch are already planning something new and better then the maaslandkering in Rotterdam. the Dutch will be fine, besides, about 70% of the dutch population has a boat, from little rowboats or small engine boats for fishing to little yacht with a lenght between 6 meters and 30 meters blue light? its suppsoed to be green! i am a sailor in Netherland! there are 3 lights, 2 red, 1 green. 2 red lights means: closed and will not open unless neccesary or on appointment. 1 red light means, closed but will open soon. 1 red and 1 green means you may pass if you can and green means: fully opened. dont know where you got from that the light is blue!
A boat is not gonna save your house, haha. Also, not sure what a boat is gonna do in case of flooding. It's not like everyone has a boat in front of their house that they can get into to get to safety. Also, 70%, where do you get this number? Out of everyone I've met in my life only very few have a boat.
According to CBS and RWS data there's only about 600.000 registered vessels. That's less than 4%. Of course if you count inflatables and rowboats it's going to be a bit more. And by population data, about 53% of the nation lives closer to delta or recreational puddles than any coastline or major body of water making it less enticing to invest in watercraft. So I highly doubt the 70% figure, I'd rather believe at least 70% has a functional grasp of how boats work or otherwise aware how to safe themselves in case of flood.
Why do you stil use "chaos units", outside the U.S. the rest of the world is using the metric system! Would it be time to educate your US viewers and use metric units!
It took some genocidal actions in the middle ages, but in the end we got Frisians in North-Holland or like it was called back then West-Frisia to submit. At least the few that were still alive. I am glad that time passed and we like each other nowadays. At least I do. Frisia is the province I feel most at home after Holland.
21:51 the "dams" should slow but not block water: Build a string of giant wind turbines. Hang a road and light(?) rail. Add used wind turbine blades to provide support and scaffolding for marine life.
You should make a video in which you say Schouwen-Duiveland, Noord -Beveland and Oosterscheldekering more often. Hilarious how you pronounce the words.
Damming off the North Sea makes sense when you want to protect land. This would also have to be a flood gate structure like we have built already. On an epic scale we haven´t seen before. Who knows :)
I'm sorry for not subscribing earlier. You realise that looking someone in the eyes can see through to the person, It's one of the things that I notice the most about someone.
As explained in the video, the Maeslantkering was designed to solve that problem. If the river water gets too high, the computer lifts the dam to relieve the pressure from behind, until they are equalised. Then the dam sinks again. And so on.
In fact, these ecologists don't even understand and know the sea as well as the dam constructors do. They just keep complaining and pointing out objections until the executive technicians and engineers basically say: "Allright, we'll share the profits of our project, so you can continue your kind of research.", and then suddenly the build project is called environment friendly and harmless to nature and the builders are allowed to save thousands of lives. If it were up to the environmentalists only, we would have drowned already.
Together we discuss all possibilities, look at the advances and diaadvances, weigh the safety for humans but also environment, look at the costs both financial and in nature preservation, and make the best decision. And even than, we correct our mistakes afterwards. Like the fish river in the Afsluitdijk and fish passage with small openings in other dams.
Let's just agree this is an in depth channel making us ponder and wonder about the important things in life? Besides all the occasional fun facts it presents us of course!
@13:07 The red line to the right, inland, eastwards, is not part of the delta works. It is the Zeelandbrug, just over 5 km or 3,12 miles, a bridge on pillars. Opened in 1965.👴🤷♂

The US did get Dutch water engineers to New Orleans to help solve the floods and I also think New York. They told them what to do and offerd to help them but the US said it was too expensive then the Dutch offered a cheaper version which would sort of would help. I could be wrong but I'm sure they implemented some of it in New York.
Here's a joke I love... where are the most peaceful the most secular and the most scientific nations in the world today.... the Viking countries. Holland/ The Netherlands with the Dutch, Norway with those big ass Norse and add Finland and Sweden. The Vikings stopped trying to get to Valhalla because just like how the pope moved from Rome to the Vatican Oden and Thor moved from Valhalla to Asgard and instead of pillaging Warriors they had to act civilized scientists and mathematicians. That's why Oden created cannabis, he had to calm down the vikings having them smoke marijuana and become great kick boxers for stress relief. 😂😂😂

Well, they wanted now destroy the delta project…they even did created a quiz, how have the best idea about the delta projects…with the the protection….the even dig big holes in the coast lines at Castricum….so the sea get all the freedom when we got a big storm, Worldwide they claim the sea level are become higher, and our beaches getting smaller, well in al the years, I do live near the sea, we don’t see that…we even got more land at IJmuiden, because of the pier, they created a harbor…..water and a hotel…. But what they want now is really insane to destroy the delta works…..because so nature can restore …
@ the holes will be 30 a 40 meter and 6 meter deep, they are created to renew the dunes, they will also put news sand for making the dunes higher because of the higher see levels and the grass will be gone…..I alway thought that the grass was placed to make the dunes stronger….
Not really, it's been done for decennia, a dune is not a dike. It helps nature to create more dunes behind the dunes. I understand that it looks strange but it's a way to help nature to give extra protection behind the first dune.
To add info: By making slots in the first dune there is a possibility for the wind to blow sand behind the first dune, so creating more small dunes behind it, which will grow over time creating a bigger barrier against the sea over time. And no, they don't dig out the dunes that deep so that sea water can get past the first dune, it's pure disrupting the top and creating a chance for the wind to blow the sand across the rest of the dunes behind the first dune.

I am glad that time passed and we like each other nowadays. At least I do. Frisia is the province I feel most at home after Holland.
21:51 the "dams" should slow but not block water:
Build a string of giant wind turbines.
Hang a road and light(?) rail.
Add used wind turbine blades to provide support and scaffolding for marine life.
You should make a video in which you say Schouwen-Duiveland, Noord -Beveland and Oosterscheldekering more often. Hilarious how you pronounce the words.
You should do a feature on Norways huge taxes even a exit tax. It’s now impossible to get rich in Norway.
Damming off the North Sea makes sense when you want to protect land. This would also have to be a flood gate structure like we have built already. On an epic scale we haven´t seen before.
Who knows :)
Like your content, but have to say your coffee looks terrible
Uhmmm ? Not even the Dutch can' keep the North sea from 'making waves' .
I'm sorry for not subscribing earlier. You realise that looking someone in the eyes can see through to the person, It's one of the things that I notice the most about someone.
W❤ this is the best
Our history is filled by horrible floods, killing cities and 1000s. We know what will happen if you dont prepare so we prepare.
It is also not possible to block a river for longer periods.. the river will fill up to the top of the barrier structure
As explained in the video, the Maeslantkering was designed to solve that problem. If the river water gets too high, the computer lifts the dam to relieve the pressure from behind, until they are equalised. Then the dam sinks again. And so on.
What is a May slent Kring???? Come on...Do your home work, look up names in wikipedia and listen to how names are pronounced... Do your homework!!!
Unobtrusively,i don't like coffee. 😂
caterpillars rule
In fact, these ecologists don't even understand and know the sea as well as the dam constructors do. They just keep complaining and pointing out objections until the executive technicians and engineers basically say: "Allright, we'll share the profits of our project, so you can continue your kind of research.", and then suddenly the build project is called environment friendly and harmless to nature and the builders are allowed to save thousands of lives. If it were up to the environmentalists only, we would have drowned already.
Yes, lets build stupid big dams and learn nothing! That will show them!
@@Peter_A1466 l'd like to hear your opinion after the waves washed away everything you own. I don't have much so I would not care.
Opened in 1965.👴🤷♂
the US is too smart to implement anything like this, common sense. We have real estate interests to acknowledge the money involved and we have insurance to take care of losses. Lives are just colleral damage replaced by other rich people
4 hours ago another person died in lochem netherlands because of a tree 😭😂
Ok lets explain why 😂
There is another way to cope with this much water.

"This Is Why Waves Don't Hit Shores in the Netherlands"
Your content is well-researched and very interesting. What I really don't enjoy is the excessive number of your front images - I would much prefer to see images or videos of what you are talking about. Us dyslexics understand better when we see what we are hearing about.
But you didnt allow Wall St too get ahold of it and Squeeze every last penny out of it and screw the public?
We created Wall Street and its business! And we screw everyone except ourselves...
i live in south Holland thanks to know that would die if there come a huge wave 💀
Wind turbine blade "groves" utilize waste and create ecosystems. Give our shores artificial reefs/mangrove forests that increase biodiversity!
Dude! How many likes ya want? Gave one at the beginning and can't give no more!😂
Fascinating content!
I'm still watching, hoping he's still missing . What did you do with him is he gonna make a comeback, lol please bring him back
Why can't they build something similar to these around? Florida and new orleans and so forth?
Those are Dutch designs.
And we do use those solutions.
Yay, another one fabout The Netherlands! :D You should team up with Highly Combustible Reacts! :D
I like your voice 😊
Well told facts didn’t know about.
We are top indeed 😍
AT LEAST WE ALL KNOW HOW TO SWIM...
AND THE WATERS AIN'T THAT DEEP!! SO...
NO WILD ANIMALS THAT WILL EAT US...
ONLY "RUBBISH" FROM THE AIR WILL DO US...
NO G.U.N.S ... SO BE SAFE FOLKS NO MATTER...
I can dig it.
4:00 shouldn't it be called the Grand Closing and not the grand Opening 😂
The pronunciations xD
I sea someone’s hyper fixation has been water management reseantly 💜. Kelp at it

Well, they wanted now destroy the delta project…they even did created a quiz, how have the best idea about the delta projects…with the the protection….the even dig big holes in the coast lines at Castricum….so the sea get all the freedom when we got a big storm,
Worldwide they claim the sea level are become higher, and our beaches getting smaller, well in al the years, I do live near the sea, we don’t see that…we even got more land at IJmuiden, because of the pier, they created a harbor…..water and a hotel….
But what they want now is really insane to destroy the delta works…..because so nature can restore …
The holes in the dunes are ther so the grassroots systems can grow deeper into the dunes and strengthen the dunes.
@ the holes will be 30 a 40 meter and 6 meter deep, they are created to renew the dunes, they will also put news sand for making the dunes higher because of the higher see levels and the grass will be gone…..I alway thought that the grass was placed to make the dunes stronger….
Swaggersouls??
now we dig holes in the dunes.... crazy...
Not really, it's been done for decennia, a dune is not a dike.
It helps nature to create more dunes behind the dunes.
I understand that it looks strange but it's a way to help nature to give extra protection behind the first dune.
@@BinneReitsma Right!
To add info:
By making slots in the first dune there is a possibility for the wind to blow sand behind the first dune, so creating more small dunes behind it, which will grow over time creating a bigger barrier against the sea over time.
And no, they don't dig out the dunes that deep so that sea water can get past the first dune, it's pure disrupting the top and creating a chance for the wind to blow the sand across the rest of the dunes behind the first dune.
@@BinneReitsma More nitrogen in the dunes....
