Im really pleased that I found your tutorial. I paid £70 for these shoes less than a year ago and the front of the sole chose to detach itself as I was walking upstairs. It is built-in obsolescence at its worse.

Great idea! There are many of us Americans also fed up w/ "programmed redundancy" (or mean time to failure) which has endless deleterious effects environmentally, economically, etc. I have at least 3 pairs of sneakers that are perfectly good save the soles falling off. Am bent on repairing rather than throwing them out. Thank you very much for sharing this video! Love your ingenuity!

Hi Philip, I am happy to see you are continuing your channel after years and that you are well. You have many good tutorials and thank you for making them. I have been repairing shoes , gluing and sewing them back together again for over 20 years now,... I used to try all kinds of glues... I found in these last years that PU glue (poly urethane) works very well for me, and sticks extraordinairy well to rubber, and is very resistant when it comes to water etc..

Something I've discovered is that pretty much all nike shoes do this, but pretty much no reebok shoes do it, so I've been converted to reebok and I couldn't be happier, no more soles falling off after a year. I have many reeboks now and not one of them has even started to fall apart. Reebok is the answer.
But this video has tremendous value and I enjoyed it very much. But now it's not an issue for me after discovering the quality world of reebok 😁

You missed a final important step.
You run a thin line of Shoe goo or similar product over the groove and it will seal over the thread to protect from abrasion. It will last even longer then.

Well done :D. Something that may also be useful is to use a sewing spur for perfect stitch spacing. Walmart and crafting centers usually carry them or you can make your own with a drill, small coin, and round file to clean it up. sealing the stitches in an adhesive like freesole afterward can also prolong the life of your boots or shoes :)

Great tutorial Philip! I have a pair of MBT walking shoes that are falling apart and a new pair is > $200! These are rocker shoes with a "sensor" (i.e. foam pad) in the heel area. The foam disintegrated after I walked in some puddles - talk about planned obsolescence. The parts are no longer available so I can't get them resoled. I'm thinking I can peel back the sole, glue in some foam, then re-attach it. I don't think sewing would work since the cushion squishes every time you walk on it. I would appreciate your ideas and I can upload a few pictures if you're interested.

I bought an Awl for five dollars at Harbor Freight Tools. That would be a lot easier and quicker with an Awl. Great idea if you can't afford an Awl. I really like your poor people ideas. I'm building a foot powered scroll saw based on your video. Only have the blade to start with. Going to make a cardboard one to make all my measurment mistakes. Then make a pattern from that cardboard after I'm sure I have it figured out correctly. When that's completed I will make that small foot powered lathe.

Excellent tutorial. I just started learning leather crafting. Your stitch method emulates a sewing machine stitch which works. Maybe Investigate the two needle saddle stitch. I think it is easier ( It is for me now because I have been practicing) and actually stronger because you have two threads in the completed stitch instead of the one. Thanks, enjoyed the video.

Thats a good idea with the wire. I have seen a few people make the bodkin into a hook like a crochet hook and then use that to grab the inside thread each time. I have got a stitching awl which was about £3 which does the same but has a hole not a hook and becomes the only tool needed . Those speedy stitch things are nothing more than that with a spool on the bottom and a screw on the side .

  • @JuanHerrero
    @JuanHerrero 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I have done something similar with sneakers. I used dental floss for sewing thread and big sewing needle that came with a sewing needle kit the first time, and a couple regular sewing needles the second. They break if you apply sideways force, but I have found they go through the rubber sole with no problem if you put enough force behind. Use something hard from the inside, like a thimble, I have used the inside of my thumbnail, which after a few times developed a hole, and just prop the head of the needle on the table or ground and push the shoe down from the outside.

Thank you for the tricky tutorial. Planned obsolescence indeed. I have 2 pairs of barely-worn shoes that lasted no more than a couple of months before the soles started peeling off. They are reebok and solomon and the climate is tropical. Get some humidity and heat in them and they'll shit themselves in a big hurry. I previously wore nothing but Oakley shoes which cost the same (or much less on special) but are properly put together. The new designs are horrible though and I'd rather keep using my old ones since the shells are durable and the feet and eyes are used to them. Now looking at various methods to be able to do so. Re-soling, sewing, shoe goo...all worthy methods.

Just have a question but off subject of this video so sorry. I've been watching your videos with my daughter for awhile now and we both love them. We do woodworking and more than that we make memories together. (Aspen is 9 now and it's how we spend Friday nights since she was about 3). She is constantly asking me questions about you and I've done my best to answer them for her. Examples where is New Zealand, Columbia, why you talk like you're from Australia and why Columbia speaks Spanish and such. She also ask why you don't just use some of the told like we have in our shop instead of making them. Like I've said I've done my best to answer her questions about the whys and how's but some I can't answer. Do you have kids, how old, do you have an email to send to, and can she send you a "Texan woodworking care package" (she made that name up not me, but she wanted to send some screws, nuts bolts, and all kinds of things she thinks would make it easier for you to build with). She hates slotted screws and sees you using them all the time. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about recycling and using what's on hand vs buying but I see her point. So just putting this out there, if you have a "this is me, my family and the 20 question answer game" I would love to see it and show her. And if you don't want to show an email here then I will give you mine "rob@tcsmail.com" and you could send it to me that way. Other than that, great videos and love the creative solutions and especially the builds! Keep it up for this little Texan that loves your videos and her old Navy dad that believes time spent with children is better than money spent on them. I tip my hat to you sir, Rob

We shared a same kind of sentiment here Rob. Im single dad raising my 2 growing up daughters. The eldest is 11yo and the other is 9yo. I think amongst my best decision in life was not surrendering my child care to their mom, as she seems hesitates to take it. Now i can tell that they had wonderful times in their lives and nothing will ever compares the feeling i felt. Being a dad wasnt easy but i tried my best to plays the part well.we too likes to spents our nights (and days as well hehe) watching diy vids also try our hand in woodworking. .and now they (especially the younger ones) had more tools knowledges than her boys classmates. .the sad things is ,as i seem to see the trends growing rapidly (single dad/custodians).. just wish the best to all of us in the same situation. .peace..
To the content owner, my apology for being OOT. Cant help it nowadays. .sorry..

I have seen a few video`s on shoe repairs, And a lot of those street repairers use a awl to the same effect, Your observation that there is a heavy built in obsolescence in modern footwear is accurate from my experience, Your also right about the regluing the sole, It will not hold till the sole wears out, With your homemade awl, I would try and do what I think I can see from other video`s, File a notch near the tip of the nail, So that the thread gets stuck on it as you pass it through the shoe, That way you don`t have to feed the wire and thread though after poking a hole though each time

The insole and outsole may be fine. But the midsole lasts 500 miles or less. So if you fix the shoes and keep wearing them like that, you aren't supporting your feet properly. If "you go down to Wal-mart and pay $9.99 for a new pair," then you aren't supporting your feet properly either. I usually wear my shoes until they fall apart or until they start to make my back hurt and then recycle them, since shoes don't belong in the trash.
