I grew up watching this VHS tape over and over with my family. I have no idea how many years it's been since I've watched this particular performance, but I still remembered every note and riff that David hits. I think he was my first vocal hero. Truly a legend.
I just don't know anyone who hears this group sing that song without feeling so blessed to be an American! When David sings his solo part and gets to the part, "but when my Lord bought Freedom, through the blood of HIS REDEMTION, His cross stamped pardon on my very soul"! Wow... there's just not another that puts it out there like David! That was the first time I ever heard David sing and I've been hooked on his music ever since.

I also noticed Ernie's face when David hit that high note on the last line of that song"Let freedom ring!" and that's how I feel - amazed ! every time I watched this video. Guy and David and Russ and Bill I think is the best combination of GVB ever!

Look at them, aren’t they reflecting the glory of God!…Guy with his long white hair like the whole horse to reflect angels, Bill who has known the Father and in whom the word word of God duels, Mark who keeps the group funky and happy and at last, David Phelps, the man of high pitches….God bless. What I love about this song is, you can be in bondage to MANY things in MANY ways, but the Lord Jesus Christ csn set you free. This isn't necessarily about a physical prison with steel bars but it's usually a way you've learned to deal with life that isn't good, healthy or legal. But Christ came to set the prisoners free from the way they've always done things or the bad things they've learned from family who didn't know any different. Thank you Jesus for showing me a better way to live my life!
I’m pretty sure the music is Bill’s, but in most of their collaborations the lyrics are mostly Gloria’s. One of the greatest Gospel songwriting duos ever. The fact that they’re best friends and soul-mates, married 59 years this year (2021) makes it even better.

David was so excited that he actually came in on a D5!!! on the last modulation instead of a C#5....AMAZING. It is actually the very first time I have ever heard him sharp...or flat. What a tremendous voice!!!! Da boy can sang.

David joined the GVB in 1997 and this performance was in 2001 from Mark Lowry On Broadway. David Phelps 1997-2005 and 2009-17.
