  • Muay Thai highlight of legendary Thai boxer Somrak Khamsing ("โม้อมตะ" สมรักษ์ คำสิงห์).
    Somrak began training at the age of seven with his brother at their home in Khon Kaen and also started fighting that same year. He moved to Bangkok aged 11 and trained at Sit Arane and the famous Jocky Gym where he began making a name for himself as an elusive technician.
    Somrak beat the very best fighters around - he was victorious against all of the great champions of the golden era but he never got a shot at the title himself.
    He was ranked number one in all stadiums at 126lbs but promoters refused to let him fight for a title. Instead, Somrak switched to boxing and competed in a total of four Olympic games, winning gold in the featherweight division at the 1996 games.
    He has had over 300 Muay Thai fights with only 10 losses and fought over 200 times in boxing with 150 wins.
    This highlight features Kamel Jemel, Yodwanpadet, Clickrit Sor Naya-Am, Tu Warren, Christien Deiski, Panomroon, Davit Kiria, Boonlai Sot Thanikul, Jowan Stringer and Victor Nagbe.

    Somrak Khamsing.. He was on a different level than a normal human. He has never practiced boxing. But he won the whole team of Thai national boxers. And won the Olympics that time despite the fact that there was Floyd Mayweather

      He trained in boxing since he was in high school, then later at the Royal Navy Gym. He competed in the National Games and Thai competitions well before trialling for the Olympics.
      You're talking bollocks my man - he definitely 'practised boxing'.

    His usage of elbows to jab is genius. It's not only an offensive set-up, but a defensive move since his elbow blocks his head. Definitely one of the most stylish Thai boxers I've seen.

    Somrak is actually a fun, down to earth and simple guy. If you meet him on the street, you can talk to him like two normal dudes. He is only boastful before the matches because he is a super fun guy.
    His weakness is that he is lazy. He doesn't like to train a lot like other super stars. He is Ronaldinho of boxing and could be worse. He told in one interview that he was so lazy to prepare for international bout that he waited for a chance when no one saw and hired a guy to give him a ride instead of jogging up the mountain like his teammates. He lost when he was old becase he had almost zero fitnees to match up the world class opponents. He said that he could think of what to do but his body just couldn't do it haha.

    • @kalas2320
      @kalas2320 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Top 5 in no order,
      1. Samart - probably the record holder for 34-fight or so unbeaten run in his prime before losing to Dieselnoi. Also another record is 3 times fighter of the year.
      2.Put - a genius.
      3. Saenchai - you should know why.
      4. Deiselnoi - forced to retire because no one could challenge him the only muyathai king who was never dethroned.
      5. Kaensak 2 times fighter of the year and an elbow specialist.
      HM Baukaw for his incredibly successful career internationally. I classify Somrak to the second tier, top 50 "at best". The thing is he's never been tested in the highest stage. He mainly fought at the channel 7 stadium not rajadamnern or lumpini. Other than that is full of excuses which have been recently made by his fans.

    • @kalas2320
      @kalas2320 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I will tell you one thing. In 80's and 90's the titles awarded by the Lumpini and Rajadamnern stadia are meaningless. You don't have to get a belt to be a top fighter. Only recently, farangs tend to over-value those belts but Thai people don't. My point is that Samart always fought and beat the best while Somrak fought average guys. For example, Samart at the age of 31 fought Gilbert Ballantine who, at that time, had just beaten Ramon Dekkers twice before fighting Samart. Somrak on the other hand has got no record against top fighters. That's why his fans come up with excuses.

      I think he went to boxing to safe his own life before become disabilities by MT fight. Let you know that most of MT fighters fight until they become disabilities and that not over 35 years old. That why recently the champions or famous MT fighters goes other tournament before late 30 yrs old rather than keep fight in MT stadium.

    • @-magna-manoban7171

      @@PopPop-of8km In his case, He was a boxing figher for his school, Padungshit Suksa since he was 12. After that when he rarely got a match in Muaythai, his promotor cant find a match for him (no match no money) So during that he have to go to do boxing and became a champ of National competition. So all the Army camps want to sign him and he chose The navy army. He did boxing under the Navy for years and first boxing in the name of Thailand team for Olimpic in 1992 when he was only 19. His boxing career for Thailand team in many tournament like SEA Game, Asian Game , World Champion and Olimpic was over a decade. Most of the time he needs to keep practicing and stay in the national camp. So that's why he didnt have much muaythai match in the era.
      In other like Samart and more turn from Muaythai to Boxing also becoz 1. They were fighting in muaythai for years and met all the tough opponent already and there were no more opponent to fight. 2 They have very good punching skill or punching power so they can switch to boxing easily and not take along time to adapt. But right now after kick boxing is more famous worldwide most of muaythai fighters tend to switch to kick boxing more than boxing.

    Too bad there's such little footage (available) of him during his peak years: fighting the best of the best of the Thai fighters and champions of that era.
    Perhaps in Thailand, they didn't see any value in saving/archiving fights or preserving the history of the sport. Most of us don't have the foresight to predict what we're taking part in (now) will someday be considered something special.
    It's hard for me to get enthusiastic about watching gross mismatches where someone of his caliber, though well past his prime, is winning against rather mediocre foreign talent who have no business being in the ring with him.

      He beat all time legends like Jomhod , Chamuekpet , Sakmongkhol , Namkabuan , etc ... While looking almost unbeatable .
      He also was Saenchai's master .

    I remembered watching him fight on the King's Birthday (Dec. 5) as a young lad. He was playful and liked to show off. But technically he was peerless. I felt bad for the foreign nak muay that was cut badly by his elbows. In retrospect though, his showing-off footages are good for the posterity to watch and study.

      thucydides Neo I believe the reason behind his show off at that event was, he was asked to do that by the most famous promotor of all muaythai history , thongchai rattanasuban, thongchai admired somrak a lot for his talented and very rare ability to use many difficult muaythai moves in the ring so I believe thongchai asked hin to do that during that fight to show the world how beauty muaythai moves can be.

    How can promoters not let the best fighters compete for a stadium title? That's crazy!

    • @-magna-manoban7171
      @-magna-manoban7171 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The case is his promotor have no championship belt at any class in his competition. So he cant make a championship match for him by that. Then if he want to make a title match for Somrak, he has to deal with other promotors who has it. But note that it not usual for promotors at that time to make a championship match against another promotor(no rule to force them to so the promotor will just make a title match between one of their fighters in this case the belt will always stay with the same promotor). And thing become harder to impossible for Somrak to get a title match becoz other promotor dont want to let his champ fight with Somrak. First reason Somrak promotor dont have any belt to trade!! Second, they know that Somrak is very good and it would be a high chance for his fighter to lose to Somrak, And if his fighter lose the belt will gone for good and dont know where or when to comeback to them again. So case close the tiltle match for Somrak never happen.
