Thank you for this information and analogy. As a person 66 yrs old, hx of weighing 240 lbs and a miserable existence, keto and fasting became a way of life. I turned my life around restoring good mental and physical health. There is one big thing I had to learn, carbs are like heroin, it only takes a little in the diet to wake up cravings. I’ve had to return to strict elimination of grains, sugar and vegetable starches. Daily podcasts like this one is therapy for me!
For over 20 years I was a diabetic. I was over 200lbs heavier, and on 300+ units of insulin every day and had A1C's in the 14's. 4 years of keto, about a 10 months of pure carnivore, and now carnivore with a few veggies. My last A1C came back at 5.1 with no diabetic medication. Everything else that has healed and doesn't hurt any more is amazing as well.

I wish Dr. Westman was my doc. Where I live I can't find a doc who gets this. I had one who finally came around when she saw how much my labs improved in just three months. Then she left the practice and now I have to start all over explaining I don't want a statin when they only look at over all cholesterol all while not paying attention that I reversed pre T2D, my trigs are low and hdl is from in a good range, all from eating keto/ketovore and now for the past year, mostly carnivore.
I am very excited for the ADS. We have used keto/ketovore to reverse my husband’s T2D. Over 13 months of gradually shifting to keto, his A1C went from 12.6 to 5.6 with a 50+ lb weight loss for him and 30+ for me. Although I wasn’t diabetic, I got rid of GERD, joint pain, fatigue and really improved my own health.
The following may not apply 100% to your discussion but here it is. I've never had Diabetes but after 3 stents in 2014, and after a heart attack in 2017 I knew I was doing something wrong and the only conclusion was the SAD was killing me . Went low carb Jan 1, 2018 and that dropped my trigs plus my A1C tested so low my Dr said he had never seen anyone that low, it's went up a little the following years on each 6 month test but it's still 4.8. That and trigs were my two worries.

Boy, this really hit home today. My A1C went up a little, after 10 months on Ketovore. I was so perplexed why it went up. Thank goodness I realize now, that this could be normal on a low carb diet! My Triglycerides went down and my HDL went up. So I now feel good with my recent blood work. Thank you Dr. Westman for the info!!! I was so worried, but now OK with it! ❤ I’ve lost 46 lbs. on Ketovore!! (Mostly meat, a few occasional Caesar salads). Feel awesome! I also happily donated to the new ADS organization 👍🏻

Thank you for this! Have been keto/carnivore for 10 months. Diabetic. My A1C went up to 6.1 from 5.7. But my fasting insulin was 5.5. I think my body/liver just wants to maintain a certain glucose level in my blood of 110 -120. This discourages me and i have often wondered if I shouldn't just quit checking my blood. So i was happy to hear that there may just be a new normal for carnivore dieters, especially diabetic people. I am willing to let this work out over years and not months. After all it took me a couple of decades to get here.
@@dan-qe1tb I'm very proud of where i am at. But at an A1C of 13.8 five years ago yes I am diabetic. I have all kinds of nerve damage from it and eye issues. If i had always been 6.1 or there about all my life I would not consider myself diabetic either. Lucky you!
I eat low carb no sugar and no refined carbs and no seed oils and my glucose levels are sometimes unexplainably higher than 110. even after 24 hour fasts. Thank you for reassuring me and others that normal may be different for keto dieter and those eating high carb and refined carb and seed oil diets.
Thank you for talking positively about the fasting glucose, it ranges from 102 to 106. I have reduced my prediabetes to current A1C of 5.4. The fasting glucose does give me anxiety, I feel less anxious listening to you. Low carb is helping my IBS, removing all grains, I tried the Fodmap and no diary, which failed. I am new, just started in March.
Without Keto but a low carb (20-50) and intermittent fasting, My A1c went from 5.7 to 5.2 in 6 weeks. Rare to have A1c's this quick, but I'm scheduled for a hip replacement Aug 9th.

one argument for "low carb" that I have not heard anywhere is: before agriculture the availability of carbohidrates was seasonal. Grains were cultivated because they stored very well over long time. Wheat can be stored for up to 12 years, depending on how dry the storage space is, and how protected from insects and rodents; as late as 100 years ago holding as many as 3 harvests in reserve was a common practice in the steppe area, that is Hungary, Romania, Southern Ukraine and Southern Russia). Before agriculture carbs would have been available for a few months every year only, and for not having settlements long storage term storage was not an option.
Thus the historic importance of that humble carnivore, the household cat, Could we have stored so many carbohydrates in the form of grains without him?

I think that what you were describing in your discovery story of moving from one place to another is referred to as liminal space. That place where you're standing on the threshold of entering a new place and understanding all the wonders and learning it could possibly hold. Liminal space ideally should change one for the good. After watchimg many of your TH-cam videos that seems to be a character of your practice.
I just am more hopeful every time I listen to you- nearly 90 days in now on lie/no carb - lost 20 lbs and trying to manage ms with lifestyle. Last weeks bloodwork with a higher cholesterol and a 5.8 a1c caused a nearly immediate call from a nurse at my docs office telling me I would need to go onn2 meds. I am not a med person but scared to deal with these at my annual physical this week- stressful!

Since 2017 I follow information about keto diet, low carb diet. I will never go back! Thanks to all these videos I undersatand so moch more about the nutrition. It's still gamechanger for me. I am very sorry for people who don't understand connection between our healthy metabolism and the diet. There are many! 🙄
To be a truely normal healthy human and avoid all the chronic physical and mental diseases, you must be a fat burner producing ketones from birth. Then again it is never too late. Sugars and starches are subsistence foods and make us sick over the long term. We crave carbs as a survival mechanism to make us put on fat from a time long ago when food was very scarce.
Thank you so much for bringing awareness to the side effects of various medications, Dr. Westman. I am extremely grateful that finally someone is cautioning people and offering alternatives to foster good health. After decades on statins and a cascade of things happening that required more medications, which only exacerbated my bad health, my body feels a sense of relief that I am beginning to restore the status quo. ♥
@@Suelynngrr I suppose you are right in that thre are probably a lot of people who just blindly follow the doctors recommendation without question. Doctor says do this and I do it. But I was presuming a thinking curious individual would already be aware of the side effects. I weigh the side effects of my prescriptions and some I take anyway and others I don't.
@@charleswilson4598 The question about whether to take statins changes considerably when you are born with inherited high cholesterol. Fear was the driving factor, but I'm more afraid of diabetes which was caused by statins, so I have had enough, thank you.

Having read a great deal about statins and several discussions with my cardiologist I think statins are not good for everybody but are helpful to those in certain categ0ories. I think I am one in that category so I take statins knowing the debate questions. I also think cholesterol is overrated and i do not worry about it too much.

Metformin-diarrhea and stomach pain...Jardiance- UTI and excoriation...Trulicity-constipation/vomiting...no thanks!...now eating low carb...blood sugar mostly in 130's and lost 15 pounds since cutting the carbs 02/01/24. Walk an hour most mornings and feel much better...can't wait to get my labs done in July and tell my doctor how I did it😊👍

QUESTION: How is it possible that everyone should have the same blood sugar? The same norms exist for tiny women & huge men, for 100 lbers & 600 lbers. Can that be right? Can't be right! How were the norms established & who do they best represent?
It is true that you don't have to have diabetes but I find that is my biggest incentive for eating low carb. If it were not diabetic I would be less inclined to eat low carb. Low carb is one way to lose weight but not the only way but it is one of the most effective ways to control my blood sugar.
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. The problem is that many of the doctor portion of the herd isn't thirsty for knowledge because they feel full of knowledge, while the lay portion of the herd is thirsty. Please don't tell me I shouldn't be thirsty. If someone says they are heading to the bathroom, do you ask them to go for you while they are there? Thanks for providing the water and letting me to it. That's my analogy anyway.
I had atrial fibrillation about two years ago. Luckily I managed to cure it even though it was non-proximal with intermittent fasting and a low carb, very low sugar diet. I now always do 17 to 19 hours a day fasting. It has improved everything, and I wish I discovered this many years back. I now have the energy of when I was in my 20's and although I am quite a slim build, I've managed to put on a moderate amount of muscle, which I think is due to growth hormone release when you are fasting for a longer fast. For me it dropped my inflammation like a stone, and took roughly 9 months to really see serious improvements. Before I discovered this and had no idea about how carbs can spike your insulin (that includes sugar of course and fruit) I tried eating quality grains, quality fruits, but I just felt terrible I noticed when monitoring my glucose how much of a spike I was getting.
My goal is to get through life with NO medication.. I’m 75 and I was on a vegetarian diet for over 35 years..I had so many days of feeling weak…even when I was eating lots of fruit and vegetables…now I’m realizing everything i thought was right about nutrition is wrong… I’m looking at the carnivore or starting out with Keto because I still have foods in my cupboard that I have to use up… not high carb food but not Carnivore…I eat carnivore breakfast.. I used to eat oatmeal every morning.. now I eat eggs and sausage or steak for breakfast…
I spent decades monitoring the fat and saturated fats were in my foods, yet I still indulged in a lot of highly processed foods. We use food for our entertainment & the food companies have made them hyper-palatable making it much more addictive. Miss those Doritos, but it's been a good 5 years
Dr Westman, how do explain all the non obese people who have type 2 diabete? It’s obvious that obesity was not a factor in there case which implies obesity is not a cause of diabetes.
Just because you are thin it does not mean you are healthy. They could have visceral fat on their organs. Dr.Sean O’Mara has lots of videos about this as well.
Diabetes is a metabolic disease from excessive carbs destroying the endocrine system and mitochondria over time. It has nothing to do with weight, although weight is a good indicator the person is consuming excess carbs and likely has a fatty liver. I'm 5-11, around 155 lbs, and was prediabetic from eating "healthy" whole foods. Didn't drink sodas, avoided desserts and grains, had little sugar. But did drink and eat lots of fruits and starches which did it.
This is very helpful, but I now I am between a rock and a hard place! My cardiologist wants me on Farxiga/Jiardiance for my congestive heart failure. I've never been diabetic. Highest A1C ever was 5.7, now 5.2. I'm overweight but losing steadily on low carb/keto.I already dropped Entresto and lisinopril because they tanked my BP. BP ran low anyway, cholesterol has always been normal, HDL and TGs are fine, and arteries are clean (per contrast CT). I don't see a reason why I should take either of those meds when I don't eat sugar to begin with. I can't figure out what those meds do that a keto diet does not. Can anyone explain that to me?

Lol. Those drugs make some slimy people very rich. There's a system in place to keep or make you sick and never let you get healthy. There's no profit from healthy people for doctors or drug pushers. Just remember that legal drug pushers are just as evil as the illegal ones.
I've been doing Keto/Carnivor but my HDL went down 6 points. I've lost 105lbs A1C down to 5.3 but triglycerides went up to 160 HDL now 30. If you see this do you have any opinion. Thanks
Problem With CAC scores, people that workout with high intensity thru out thier whole life , tend to have higher CAC scores. For example Ultra Marathoners. Do they need statins, if they have a great HDL to triglycerides ratio? That's my category, I am low carb to no carb eater with a high CAC , but a great HDL to triglycerides ratio. I won't take statins, that effect every cell in your body. It's hard to sell a drug to a 64 year old , that is feeling great. Besides after the age of 60, people with higher LDL statistically live longer. Currently big Medical wants to drive LDL into the toilet. That's insane to me.
Dr. Westman recommends no more than 20 grams of carbs per day. He also recommends that if you're on meds, you have to work a doc bc meds can become too powerful very quickly. He has a great book w all the details available at most libraries. it's called: "End Your Carb Confusion."

Hi doc , new subscriber here, im now on a low carb diet and my weight goes down fast but i notice that all my blood work improves aside from cholesterol, is it normal that i lose significant weight but choleterol increases. But i feel good, is that possible??? Thanks
I don't know what will doctor say but when you are on low carb something has to replace the sugar as fuel for cell. And that replacement is cholesterol from fat cells or fat from food. At first is cholesterol released to blood stream and than liver can make from it ketones.
Yep it happened to me but HDL and triglyceride ratio is more Important number. Get a NMR test to see if you have small or large fluffy LDL small is deleterious large is not cholesterol of 300 could be fine. See Dr Sten Ekberg u tube for more imformation
What about reversing type 1? A guy from my HS class claims he reversed his type 1 and then his type 2 diabetes. Didn't give specifics, but said his body started producing insulin again.
The only thing I can think of is through a series of extended water fasts (with proper electrolytes). This would make use of autophagy, which in turn could potentially let the beta cells/pancreas heal themselves. It's worth looking into. 😉✌️

Hello doctor! I hope this question can get an answer. I recently started carnivore. I noticed quickly I like the taste of cooked meat from being prepared on the bbq. Versus the stove top. Are there disadvantages or advantages to this. Of late, I bbq all my meat. I was assuming I might lose fat. However, I do melt some grass fed butter in sauce pan and put it onto the meat. Hoping this helps add healthy fats. I'm mostly concerned about cancer promotion from info I thought I heard awhile back. Hope you can bring clarity. Thank you!

Studies have shown that stress can affect your cells because it causes your cells to protect themselves. So if you obsess over numbers you can actually cause issues by worrying about issues lol. Keep you weight down glucose levels low and blood pressure and realize you won’t live forever. Be good to yourself and smile and laugh a lot.

I was doing great doctors don't like accepting the fact that you can do things without a bunch of meds but they took me off of my thyroid medication and got everything out of whack and was telling me my thyroid was normal when in fact it wasn't now I'm all messed up again trying to fix myself they're trying to tell me that I have had diabetes for so long and it's a progressive disease that I probably am not ever going to be able to do it with diet again and are trying to force medications on me I don't know what to believe anymore all I know is every good thing I fight for and do for myself a doctor wants to destroy😢😢😢😢 I've had doctors almost kill me several times
Please stop advosing against data collection on the ggrounds that ot might cause anxiety. That is very individual and personality dependant. For some that data is engaging and motivating, and your belief has been used to deny access to useful technology by putting it behind a prescription 'paywall'.
I agree! I love data! I find using a glucose meter to be reassuring, empowering and motivating. I check my own A1C periodically, too. A dumbed down over-the-counter CGM version is supposed to be available this summer or fall. I’m excited!
He's not an endocrinologist, and it shows. Diabetes is a complex, multifactorial health condition. There is no one-size-fits-all solution including just, "eating fewer carbs", without getting into their quality, and what they are eaten with. If "eating fewer carbs", was a diabetes care revelation, my endocrinologist would have brought it up during the first visit. I know, I know, "the conventional medical community doesn't want you to know!", and, my favorite Berry one, "The ADA doesn't officially endorse my favorite diet: they must be incompetent!"
The more simple process for those who don’t want to make it complex and actually want to reverse their type 2, the insulin resistance that caused it, and the resulting inflammation that leads to all chronic disease IS eat fewer carbs less often. Eat fewer than 20 total grams of carbs and add in fasting, both daily eating windows and extended fasting, and even people who have had type 2 for years can often reverse it in weeks or months. If you want to make it more complicated or complex, then go ahead. It doesn’t have to be.

From the 1950s I recall women saying if you want to stay thin, you can’t eat sugar bread and pasta. They were on the right path.
We all knew that in high school in the early sixties.

Your A1C can sometimes go up on this diet because your red blood cells live longer.

I think that what you were describing in your discovery story of moving from one place to another is referred to as liminal space. I just am more hopeful every time I listen to you- nearly 90 days in now on lie/no carb - lost 20 lbs and trying to manage ms with lifestyle. Last weeks bloodwork with a higher cholesterol and a 5.8 a1c caused a nearly immediate call from a nurse at my docs office telling me I would need to go onn2 meds. I am not a med person but scared to deal with these at my annual physical this week- stressful!

To be a truely normal healthy human and avoid all the chronic physical and mental diseases, you must be a fat burner producing ketones from birth. Then again it is never too late. Sugars and starches are subsistence foods and make us sick over the long term. We crave carbs as a survival mechanism to make us put on fat from a time long ago when food was very scarce.
Thank you so much for bringing awareness to the side effects of various medications, Dr. Westman. I am extremely grateful that finally someone is cautioning people and offering alternatives to foster good health. After decades on statins and a cascade of things happening that required more medications, which only exacerbated my bad health, my body feels a sense of relief that I am beginning to restore the status quo. ♥

But I was presuming a thinking curious individual would already be aware of the side effects. I weigh the side effects of my prescriptions and some I take anyway and others I don't.
@@charleswilson4598 The question about whether to take statins changes considerably when you are born with inherited high cholesterol. Fear was the driving factor, but I'm more afraid of diabetes which was caused by statins, so I have had enough, thank you.

Having read a great deal about statins and several discussions with my cardiologist I think statins are not good for everybody but are helpful to those in certain categ0ories. I think I am one in that category so I take statins knowing the debate questions. I also think cholesterol is overrated and i do not worry about it too much.

Metformin-diarrhea and stomach pain...Jardiance- UTI and excoriation...Trulicity-constipation/vomiting...no thanks!...now eating low carb...blood sugar mostly in 130's and lost 15 pounds since cutting the carbs 02/01/24. Walk an hour most mornings and feel much better...can't wait to get my labs done in July and tell my doctor how I did it😊👍

It is true that you don't have to have diabetes but I find that is my biggest incentive for eating low carb. If it were not diabetic I would be less inclined to eat low carb. Low carb is one way to lose weight but not the only way but it is one of the most effective ways to control my blood sugar.
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. The problem is that many of the doctor portion of the herd isn't thirsty for knowledge because they feel full of knowledge, while the lay portion of the herd is thirsty. Please don't tell me I shouldn't be thirsty. If someone says they are heading to the bathroom, do you ask them to go for you while they are there? Thanks for providing the water and letting me to it. That's my analogy anyway.

I had atrial fibrillation about two years ago. Luckily I managed to cure it even though it was non-proximal with intermittent fasting and a low carb, very low sugar diet. I now always do 17 to 19 hours a day fasting. It has improved everything, and I wish I discovered this many years back. I now have the energy of when I was in my 20's and although I am quite a slim build, I've managed to put on a moderate amount of muscle, which I think is due to growth hormone release when you are fasting for a longer fast. For me it dropped my inflammation like a stone, and took roughly 9 months to really see serious improvements. Before I discovered this and had no idea about how carbs can spike your insulin (that includes sugar of course and fruit) I tried eating quality grains, quality fruits, but I just felt terrible I noticed when monitoring my glucose how much of a spike I was getting.
My goal is to get through life with NO medication.. I’m 75 and I was on a vegetarian diet for over 35 years..I had so many days of feeling weak…even when I was eating lots of fruit and vegetables…now I’m realizing everything i thought was right about nutrition is wrong… I’m looking at the carnivore or starting out with Keto because I still have foods in my cupboard that I have to use up… not high carb food but not Carnivore…I eat carnivore breakfast.. I used to eat oatmeal every morning.. now I eat eggs and sausage or steak for breakfast…

I spent decades monitoring the fat and saturated fats were in my foods, yet I still indulged in a lot of highly processed foods. We use food for our entertainment & the food companies have made them hyper-palatable making it much more addictive. Miss those Doritos, but it's been a good 5 years

Dr Westman, how do explain all the non obese people who have type 2 diabete? It’s obvious that obesity was not a factor in there case which implies obesity is not a cause of diabetes.
Just because you are thin it does not mean you are healthy. They could have visceral fat on their organs. Dr.Sean O’Mara has lots of videos about this as well.
Diabetes is a metabolic disease from excessive carbs destroying the endocrine system and mitochondria over time. It has nothing to do with weight, although weight is a good indicator the person is consuming excess carbs and likely has a fatty liver.
I'm 5-11, around 155 lbs, and was prediabetic from eating "healthy" whole foods. Didn't drink sodas, avoided desserts and grains, had little sugar. But did drink and eat lots of fruits and starches which did it.
Diabetes is a disease of uncontrolled blood sugar most likely from chronic activation of the randle cycle.

This is very helpful, but I now I am between a rock and a hard place! My cardiologist wants me on Farxiga/Jiardiance for my congestive heart failure. I've never been diabetic. Highest A1C ever was 5.7, now 5.2. I'm overweight but losing steadily on low carb/keto.I already dropped Entresto and lisinopril because they tanked my BP. BP ran low anyway, cholesterol has always been normal, HDL and TGs are fine, and arteries are clean (per contrast CT). I don't see a reason why I should take either of those meds when I don't eat sugar to begin with. I can't figure out what those meds do that a keto diet does not. Can anyone explain that to me?

I've been doing Keto/Carnivor but my HDL went down 6 points. I've lost 105lbs A1C down to 5.3 but triglycerides went up to 160 HDL now 30. If you see this do you have any opinion. Thanks

Problem With CAC scores, people that workout with high intensity thru out thier whole life , tend to have higher CAC scores. For example Ultra Marathoners. Do they need statins, if they have a great HDL to triglycerides ratio?
That's my category, I am low carb to no carb eater with a high CAC , but a great HDL to triglycerides ratio. I won't take statins, that effect every cell in your body. It's hard to sell a drug to a 64 year old , that is feeling great. Besides after the age of 60, people with higher LDL statistically live longer. Currently big Medical wants to drive LDL into the toilet. That's insane to me.

Dr. Westman recommends no more than 20 grams of carbs per day. He also recommends that if you're on meds, you have to work a doc bc meds can become too powerful very quickly. He has a great book w all the details available at most libraries. it's called: "End Your Carb Confusion."

I don't know what will doctor say but when you are on low carb something has to replace the sugar as fuel for cell. And that replacement is cholesterol from fat cells or fat from food. At first is cholesterol released to blood stream and than liver can make from it ketones.
If high HDL and low triglycerides you're probably OK. Get a CAC score.
Yep it happened to me but HDL and triglyceride ratio is more Important number. Get a NMR test to see if you have small or large fluffy LDL small is deleterious large is not cholesterol of 300 could be fine. See Dr Sten Ekberg u tube for more imformation

What about reversing type 1? A guy from my HS class claims he reversed his type 1 and then his type 2 diabetes. Didn't give specifics, but said his body started producing insulin again.
The only thing I can think of is through a series of extended water fasts (with proper electrolytes). This would make use of autophagy, which in turn could potentially let the beta cells/pancreas heal themselves. It's worth looking into. 😉✌️

I recently started carnivore. I noticed quickly I like the taste of cooked meat from being prepared on the bbq. Versus the stove top.
Are there disadvantages or advantages to this. Of late, I bbq all my meat.
I was assuming I might lose fat. However, I do melt some grass fed butter in sauce pan and put it onto the meat. Hoping this helps add healthy fats.

Studies have shown that stress can affect your cells because it causes your cells to protect themselves. So if you obsess over numbers you can actually cause issues by worrying about issues lol. Keep you weight down glucose levels low and blood pressure and realize you won’t live forever. Be good to yourself and smile and laugh a lot.

I was doing great doctors don't like accepting the fact that you can do things without a bunch of meds but they took me off of my thyroid medication and got everything out of whack and was telling me my thyroid was normal when in fact it wasn't now I'm all messed up again trying to fix myself they're trying to tell me that I have had diabetes for so long and it's a progressive disease that I probably am not ever going to be able to do it with diet again and are trying to force medications on me I don't know what to believe anymore all I know is every good thing I fight for and do for myself a doctor wants to destroy😢😢😢😢 I've had doctors almost kill me several times

Please stop advosing against data collection on the ggrounds that ot might cause anxiety. That is very individual and personality dependant. For some that data is engaging and motivating, and your belief has been used to deny access to useful technology by putting it behind a prescription 'paywall'.
I agree! I love data! I find using a glucose meter to be reassuring, empowering and motivating. I check my own A1C periodically, too. A dumbed down over-the-counter CGM version is supposed to be available this summer or fall. I’m excited!

He's not an endocrinologist, and it shows. Diabetes is a complex, multifactorial health condition. There is no one-size-fits-all solution including just, "eating fewer carbs", without getting into their quality, and what they are eaten with. If "eating fewer carbs", was a diabetes care revelation, my endocrinologist would have brought it up during the first visit. I know, I know, "the conventional medical community doesn't want you to know!", and, my favorite Berry one, "The ADA doesn't officially endorse my favorite diet: they must be incompetent!"
If your endo didn’t educate you about carbs then he’s part of the problem .
The more simple process for those who don’t want to make it complex and actually want to reverse their type 2, the insulin resistance that caused it, and the resulting inflammation that leads to all chronic disease IS eat fewer carbs less often. Eat fewer than 20 total grams of carbs and add in fasting, both daily eating windows and extended fasting, and even people who have had type 2 for years can often reverse it in weeks or months.
If you want to make it more complicated or complex, then go ahead. It doesn’t have to be.
